Limestone Wall Retreat In A Ceiling Cupola Controlled By Hydrothermal Degassing With Wall Condensation (Szunyogh Model), Baudouin Lismonde

KIP Articles

Audra, Bigot and Monochain (2003) proposed an explanation for the development of a hydrothermal cave in Provence (France), referring to the Szunyogh model (1989). Dreybrodt (2003) then shows by calculations that this model is unlikely. We will discuss Dreybrodt's answer here. Our conclusions will ephasise that Dreybrodt's hypothesis (transient conduction in a semi-infinite solid) is not the only possibility. When other conditions are considered (steady-state conduction with constant temperature at a finite distance), this cupola-development model can be valid.

Anisotropic Splitting Of Intersubband Spin Plasmons In Quantum Wells With Bulk And Structural Inversion Asymmetry, Carsten A. Ullrich, M. E. Flatté Dec 2003

Anisotropic Splitting Of Intersubband Spin Plasmons In Quantum Wells With Bulk And Structural Inversion Asymmetry, Carsten A. Ullrich, M. E. Flatté

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In semiconductor heterostructures, bulk and structural inversion asymmetry and spin-orbit coupling induce a k-dependent spin splitting of valence and conduction subbands, which can be viewed as being caused by momentum-dependent crystal magnetic fields. This paper studies the influence of these effective magnetic fields on the intersubband spin dynamics in an asymmetric n-type GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As quantum well. We calculate the dispersions of intersubband spin plasmons using linear-response theory. the so-called D'yakonov-Perel' decoherence mechanism is inactive for collective intersubband excitations, i.e., crystal magnetic fields do not lead to decoherence of spin plasmons. Instead, we predict that the main signature …

Patenting Computer Data Structures: The Ghost, The Machine And The Federal Circuit, Andrew Joseph Hollander Dec 2003

Patenting Computer Data Structures: The Ghost, The Machine And The Federal Circuit, Andrew Joseph Hollander

Duke Law & Technology Review

Courts view "data structures," the mechanism by which computers store data in meaningful relationships, differently than do computer scientists. While computer scientists recognize that data structures have aspects that are both physical (how they are stored in memory) and logical (the relationships among the stored information), the Federal Circuit, in its attempts to set clear standards of the scope of patentability of data structures, has not fully appreciated their dualistic nature. This i-brief explains what data structures are, explores how courts have wrestled with setting a limiting principle to determine their patentability, and discusses the resultant impact on claim drafting.

The Effect Of Time Delays In The Stability Of Load Balancing Algorithms For Parallel Computations, Chaouki T. Abdallah, J. D. Birdwell, John Chiasson, Zhong Tang, Nivedita Alluri, Tsewei Wang Dec 2003

The Effect Of Time Delays In The Stability Of Load Balancing Algorithms For Parallel Computations, Chaouki T. Abdallah, J. D. Birdwell, John Chiasson, Zhong Tang, Nivedita Alluri, Tsewei Wang

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Deterministic dynamic nonlinear time-delay systems are developed to model load balancing in a cluster of computer nodes used for parallel computations. The model is shown to be self consistent in that the queue lengths cannot go negative and the total number of tasks in all the queues are conserved (i.e., load balancing can neither create nor lose tasks). Further, it is shown that using the proposed load balancing algorithms, the system is stable. Experimental results are presented and compared with the predicted results from the analytical model. In particular, simulations of the models are compared with an experimental implementation of …

Dynamical Discrete-Time Load Balancing In Distributed Systems In The Presence Of Time Delays, Chaouki T. Abdallah, S. Dhakal, B. S. Paskaleva, M. M. Hayat, E. Schamiloglu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The implementation of a load balancing policy on a continuous basis in a delay-limited distributed computing environment may not only drain the computational resources of each computational element (CE), but can also lead to an unnecessary exchange of loads between the CEs. This degrades the system performance, measured by the overall completion time of the total tasks in the system. Thus, for a given distribution of the load among the CEs, there has to be an optimal number and distribution of discrete balancing instants. This paper focuses on #xing the number of balancing instants and optimizing the completion time over …

Robust Mobile Robotic Formation Control Using Internet-Like Protocols, Chaouki T. Abdallah, R. Sandoval-Rodriguez, R. H. Byme Dec 2003

Robust Mobile Robotic Formation Control Using Internet-Like Protocols, Chaouki T. Abdallah, R. Sandoval-Rodriguez, R. H. Byme

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This work presents an internet-like protocol (ILP) to coordinate the formation of n second-order agents in a two dimensional (2D) space. The trajectories are specified trough via points and a desired formation at each point. A basis for the proof of convergence is given using Lyapunov second method. Simulink is used to verify the response of the agents for a variety of desired trajectories. The proposed algorithms are robust in the sense that they can accommodate changes in the formation of the agents and more importantly, changes in the number of agents as some of them drop of or join …

Quasi-Monte Carlo Methods In Robust Control Design, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Peter E. Hokayem

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Many practical control problems are so complex that traditional analysis and design methods fail to solve. Consequently, sampling methods that provide approximate solutions to such difficult problems have emerged. In this paper we address the deterministic quasi-Monte Carlo method of sampling and attempt to impose bounds on the error involved in the evaluation of the quality of performance of a specific controller over the whole plant parameter uncertainty space.

Least Squares Support Vector Machines For Fixed-Step And Fixed-Set Cdma Power Control, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Judd A. Rohwer, Christos G. Christodoulou

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents two machine learning based algorithms for CDMA power control. The least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) algorithms classify eigenvalues estimates into sets of power control commands. A binary LS-SVM algorithm generates fixed step power control (FSPC) commands, while the one vs. one multiclass LS-SVM algorithm generates estimates for fixed set power control.
