Preliminary Performance Evaluation Of An Agent-Based Geospatial Data Conflation System, Shahram Rahimi, Johan Bjursell, Dia Ali, Maria Cobb, Marcin Paprzycki

A rapid growth of available geospatial data requires development of systems capable of autonomous data retrieval, integration and validation. Mobile agent technology may provide a suitable framework for developing such systems since this technology can deal, in a natural way, with the distributed heterogeneous nature of the data. We evaluate our novel multi-agent architecture for geospatial data integration and compare its performance with a client/server and a single-agent architecture. We analyze the performance alteration for various numbers of participating nodes, amount of database accesses, processing loads, and network loads.

Mpiab: A Novel Agent Architecture For Parallel Processing, Shahram Rahimi, Ajay Narayanan, Meha Sabharwal
Computer Science Publications
This paper presents MPIAB, an agent based architecture for parallel processing. The architecture is developed to model the functions of standard MPI using Java agents. It remedies the deficiencies that exist in MPI, including the incapability to operate in heterogeneous environments. The architecture also addresses other issues such as effective utilization of system resources by dynamically selecting the least busy computing nodes through the computation of a threshold barrier value. Our proposed agent architecture would integrate the power of Java technology and agents to support efficient communication and synchronization of the nodes over the network for parallel processing.

Bellow's and Moulton's The Lawyering Process emphasized the need for law students and lawyers to draw on other disciplines for effective skills development, to make self-analysis of their professional skills and principles a career-long practice, and to remain ever vigilant of emerging ethical issues. This article attempts to honor those lessons by applying them to lawyers' use of computer mediated communication (CMC) in interacting with clients and in negotiating for clients. The article examines the social science research on CMC, applies that research to the lawyer's context, and makes some tentative assessments about the skills involved in lawyers' use of …

Mobicom Poster: Evaluating Location Predictors With Extensive Wi-Fi Mobility Data, Libo Song, David Kotz, Ravi Jain, Xiaoning He
Dartmouth Scholarship
A fundamental problem in mobile computing and wireless networks is the ability to track and predict the location of mobile devices. An accurate location predictor can significantly improve the performance or reliability of wireless network protocols, the wireless network infrastructure itself, and many applications in pervasive computing. These improvements lead to a better user experience, to a more cost-effective infrastructure, or both. Location prediction has been proposed in many areas of wireless cellular networks as a means of enhancing performance, including better mobility management, improved assignment of cells to location areas, more efficient paging, and call admission control. To the …

Fetal Surgery And Wrongful Death Actions On Behalf Of The Unborn: An Argument For A Social Standard, Jonathan D. Stanley
Vanderbilt Law Review
Imagine a young couple in the not-too-distant-future who are eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child. During the eighteenth week of the pregnancy, the mother has an ultrasound performed to detect possible developmental problems with the child. To their dismay, the ultrasound reveals a malformation in the fetus. The defect will not be fatal, but if left untreated will cause the child severe breathing problems once born. The problem can be fixed with surgery after birth, but such a procedure will result in disfiguring facial scars. After thoroughly considering their options, which range from an abortion to carrying the …

Obstructed Labor In A Teaching Hospital In Sudan, Saeed E. Dafallah, Justin Ambago, Faroug El-Agib
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed to deal with a serious obstetrical problem in Wad Medani Teaching Hospital, Medani, Sudan. The study reviewed the incidence of obstructed labor, its clinical presentation and methods of diagnosis. The study also includes the methods of treatment and its complications. METHODS: A prospective and descriptive study was carried out in Wad Medani Teaching Hospital, Medani, Sudan. Case notes were studied for all cases with obstructed labor received during the period 1 January 1997 to 31 December 1999. The data was analyzed. The literature was reviewed for similar studies. RESULTS: During the period 207 cases of …

Plasma Copper And Zinc Levels In Pregnant Women In Gaziantep, Turkey, Iclal Meram, Ali I. Bozkurt, Sibel Ahi, Servet Ozgur
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Trace elements such as copper and zinc are important factors on the health of pregnant women, fetus and embryonic development. Since these elements have important influences on health of pregnant women and the growing fetus, this study was designed to evaluate the zinc and copper status of pregnant women in Gaziantep, Turkey. METHODS: This study was designed as a prevalence study. Twenty-two health station region were chosen in 13 health centers in the province of Gaziantep city in 1999, and copper and zinc levels were examined in 415 pregnant women living in these regions. Plasma copper and zinc concentrations …

Light And Electron Microscopic Examination Of Human Subungual Tissue. Glomus And Lamellated Bodies, Mustafa F. Sargon, H. Hamdi Celik, C. Cem Denk, Attila Dagdeviren, Gursel Leblebicioglu
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: There is only limited data related to the subungual glomus body. We therefore studied the structure of this organ, aiming to obtain further evidence. Additionally, we encountered undefined receptor like structures in close association with these glomus cells, named them as lamellated bodies and examined both of the structures at light and electron microscopic levels. METHODS: This study was carried out at the Faculty of Medicine, Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey, during the time period May 2001 to March 2002. In this study, the subungual tissues of 4 patients were examined. RESULTS: Within subungual tissue, 2 groups of morphologically significant …

IMSA Great Minds Program ®
During 20 years as a Naval Aviator, including 13 years with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Captain Eugene A. Cernan left his mark on history with three historic missions in space as the Pilot of Gemini IX (1966), the Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo X (1969), and the Commander of Apollo XVII (1972). After flying to the moon not once, but twice, he also holds the distinction of being the second American to walk in space and the last man to have left his footprints on the lunar surface.

A rash of high-profile bankruptcies has led to a search for answers. Many hold auditors responsible for not detecting the potential for bankruptcy during the most recent audit. The Weiss Report, a study of several dozen bankrupt companies submitted to the U.S. Senate during its deliberations on the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, found a "broad and massive failure" on the part of auditors to raise "yellow flags" that indicate potential bankruptcy. The authors examined Weiss' methodology and found that, applied to a broader group of companies, Weiss' criteria would have incorrectly predicted bankruptcy for nearly half of the non-bankrupt companies studied. This …
