Greedy Algorithms For Optimizing Multivariate Horner Schemes, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2003

Greedy Algorithms For Optimizing Multivariate Horner Schemes, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

For univariate polynomials f(x1), Horner scheme provides the fastest way to compute the value. For multivariate polynomials, several different version of Horner scheme are possible; it is not clear which of them is optimal. In this paper, we propose a greedy algorithm that will hopefully lead to good computation times.

A univariate Horner scheme has another advantage: if the value x1 is known with uncertainty, and we are interested in the resulting uncertainty in f(x1), then Horner scheme leads to a better estimate for this uncertainty than many other ways of computing f(x1). The second greedy algorithm that we propose …

Interval Approach To Phase Measurements Can Lead To Arbitrarily Complex Sets - A Theorem And Ways Around It, Bharat C. Mulupuru, Vladik Kreinovich, Roberto Osegueda Oct 2003

Interval Approach To Phase Measurements Can Lead To Arbitrarily Complex Sets - A Theorem And Ways Around It, Bharat C. Mulupuru, Vladik Kreinovich, Roberto Osegueda

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We are often interested in phases of complex quantities; e.g., in non-destructive testing of aerospace structures, important information comes from phases of Eddy current and magnetic resonance.

For each measurement, we have an upper bound D on the measurement error dx=X-x, so when the measurement result is X, we know that the actual value x is in [X-D,X+D]. Often, we have no information about probabilities of different values, so this interval is our only information about x. When the accuracy is not sufficient, we perform several repeated measurements, and conclude that x belongs to the intersection of the corresponding intervals. …

Departures From Karachi Airport: Some Reflections On Feminist Outrage, Ambreen Hai Oct 2003

Departures From Karachi Airport: Some Reflections On Feminist Outrage, Ambreen Hai

English Language and Literature: Faculty Publications

Prefatory Note: This essay revisits an experience - my encounter with an airport border control official as I was leaving Pakistan - that occurred in October 2000. At First, this otherwise trivial incident seemed to me illustrative of several postcolonial and/feminist concerns, such as the regulation of national and gender identities at sites of border crossing, or the patriarchal oppressiveness of state power and practices. But as I retold the story, I began to realize that there were additional dimensions to it that called for something else, that required me to re-examine, though not altogether repudiate, my initial indignation. This …

Proximal Factors Predicting Student Performance In A Self-Paced College Psychology Course, Ronald L. Skidmore Oct 2003

Proximal Factors Predicting Student Performance In A Self-Paced College Psychology Course, Ronald L. Skidmore

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This study examined the effectiveness of using selected self-report measures assessing motivational orientation, learning strategies, procrastination, and perceptions of daily hassles to facilitate the prediction of student engagement in a self-paced introductory psychology course. Research has shown these factors to be associated with academic success, and of concern to instructors and students alike. Surveys that economically and effectively assess these factors would be invaluable for the instructor attempting to predict student engagement and determining possible interventions to promote academic success. Four surveys purporting to measure the constructs were chosen. A demographic survey was also administered.

Managing Interjurisdictional Waters Under The Great Lakes Charter Annex, Mark Squillace, Sandi Zellmer Oct 2003

Managing Interjurisdictional Waters Under The Great Lakes Charter Annex, Mark Squillace, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

In spring 1998, the Nova Group of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, proposed to ship nearly 160 million gallons of Lake Superior water annually via tanker to Asia. See INTERNATIONAL JOINT COMMISSION, PROTECTION OF THE WATERS OF THE GREAT LAKES: FINAL REPORT TO THE GOVERNMENTS OF CAVADA AND THE UNITED STATES 44 (2000) (2000 IJC Report). Nova's proposal coincided with declining water levels in the Great Lakes, and the resulting public outcry and pressure from other Great Lakes governments persuaded Ontario to revoke Nova's permit just a few months later. The Nova proposal prompted the eight American states and two Canadian …

Organic Diodes, Field -Effect Transistors, And An Inverter Circuit By Microfabrication Techniques, Guirong Liang Oct 2003

Organic Diodes, Field -Effect Transistors, And An Inverter Circuit By Microfabrication Techniques, Guirong Liang

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this work is to fabricate microelectronic devices and circuits based on organic and polymer materials by micro fabrication techniques.

The organic microelectronic device is one of the most promising alternative to traditional inorganic devices due to its varieties of advantages, such as low-cost, large area (e.g. for display), and distinguished mechanical property (insensitive to mechanical deformation). For practical applications, it is necessary to reduce the fabrication cost as well as to improve the device's performance. In this work several fabrication processes have been developed to build organic diodes, field-effect transistors (FETs) and circuits.

Vocabulary Instruction And Its Effects On Writing Quality, Denise Soileau Moseley Oct 2003

Vocabulary Instruction And Its Effects On Writing Quality, Denise Soileau Moseley

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare the quality of writing, specifically in terms of vocabulary use, of students in the 8th grade whose teacher used intensive vocabulary instruction only or intensive vocabulary instruction together with explicit writing instruction. The investigation sought to determine if a deep knowledge of pretaught words would have an effect on those words used in student writing. All students in the study had the same intensive vocabulary instruction, but one group had the added component of explicit instruction on how to use pretaught words in their writing.

Intact groups, consisting of 87 students in …

Academic Leadership In Ivy Tech State College: Academic Chairs’ Tasks And Job Challenges, Michael Petty

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

This study was conducted to establish baseline information about Ivy Tech State College academic chairs’ personal/background characteristics and to determine those chairs’ rating of the importance of their tasks and their perceptions of the job challenges they will face in the future. In addition, the study compared Ivy Tech chairs’ personal/ background characteristics and perceptions of their tasks and job challenges with the findings of the 1992 International Community College Chair Survey. Although there were some statistically different ratings, in essence both samples of chairs highly rate the importance of their myriad tasks and they are in general agreement as …
