Vector Dissipativity Theory For Discrete-Time Large-Scale Nonlinear Dynamical Systems, Wassim M. Haddad, Qing Hui, Vijaysekhar Chellaboina, Sergey Nersesov Oct 2003

Vector Dissipativity Theory For Discrete-Time Large-Scale Nonlinear Dynamical Systems, Wassim M. Haddad, Qing Hui, Vijaysekhar Chellaboina, Sergey Nersesov

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In analyzing large-scale systems, it is often desirable to treat the overall system as a collection of interconnected subsystems. Solution properties of the large-scale system are then deduced from the solution properties of the individual subsystems and the nature of the system interconnections. In this paper, we develop an analysis framework for discrete-time large-scale dynamical systems based on vector dissipativity notions. Specifically, using vector storage functions and vector supply rates, dissipativity properties of the discrete-time composite large-scale system are shown to be determined from the dissipativity properties of the subsystems and their interconnections. In particular, extended Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov conditions, in terms …

Librarians And Link Rot: A Comparative Analysis With Some Methodological Considerations, David C. Tyler, Beth Mcneil Oct 2003

Librarians And Link Rot: A Comparative Analysis With Some Methodological Considerations, David C. Tyler, Beth Mcneil

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The longevity of printed guides to resources on the web is a topic of some concern to all librarians. This paper attempts to determine whether guides created by specialist librarians perform better than randomly assembled lists of resources (assembled solely for the purpose of web studies), commercially created guides ('Best of the web'-type publications), and guides prepared by specialists in library science and other fields. The paper also attempts to determine whether the characteristics of included web resources have an impact on guides' longevity. Lastly, the paper addresses methodological issues of concern to this and similar studies.

Origin And Implications Of The Observed Rhombohedral Phase In Nominally Tetragonal Pb(Zr0.35Ti0.65)O3 Thin Films, Paul C. Mcintyre, Alexei Gruverman, Bryan C. Hendrix, Steven M. Bilodeau, Jeffrey F. Roeder Oct 2003

Origin And Implications Of The Observed Rhombohedral Phase In Nominally Tetragonal Pb(Zr0.35Ti0.65)O3 Thin Films, Paul C. Mcintyre, Alexei Gruverman, Bryan C. Hendrix, Steven M. Bilodeau, Jeffrey F. Roeder

Alexei Gruverman Publications

The structural and electrical properties of Pb(Zr0.35Ti0.65)O3 (PZT) thin films ranging in thickness from 700 to 4000 Å have been investigated. These (001)/(100)-textured films were grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on (111)-textured Ir bottom electrodes. It was observed that, in the as-deposited state, the thinnest PZT films are rhombohedral even though bulk PZT of this composition should be tetragonal. Thicker films have a layered structure with tetragonal PZT at the surface and rhombohedral PZT at the bottom electrode interface. In this article we investigate the origin of this structure and its effect of the …

Team Approach To Management, Al Prosch Oct 2003

Team Approach To Management, Al Prosch

Cornhusker Economics

In 2003 Key and Mcbride1 found that pork operations using production contracts improved productivity. They asserted that improvement in the quality of managerial inputs such as improving information transfers and facilitating access to credit may account for such improvements. Alvarez and Arias2 suggested that fixed managerial ability causes agricultural operations to suffer dis-economies of size. Managerial ability, as described by Kaldor3, consists of supervision and coordination. Supervision is crucial for numerous individuals to work together to complete the responsibilities for common production results. The coordination aspect is that function of deciding which arrangements or contracts should be entered into. While …

Implementation Of An Acoustic Echo Canceller Using Matlab, Srinivasaprasath Raghavendran Oct 2003

Implementation Of An Acoustic Echo Canceller Using Matlab, Srinivasaprasath Raghavendran

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The rapid growth of technology in recent decades has changed the whole dimension of communications. Today people are more interested in hands-free communication. In such a situation, the use a regular loudspeaker and a high-gain microphone, in place of a telephone receiver, might seem more appropriate. This would allow more than one person to participate in a conversation at the same time such as a teleconference environment. Another advantage is that it would allow the person to have both hands free and to move freely in the room. However, the presence of a large acoustic coupling between the loudspeaker and …

Allowed Mesoscopic Point Group Symmetries In Domain Average Engineering Of Perovskite Ferroelectric Crystals, Dorian M. Hatch, H. T. Stokes, W. Cao

Faculty Publications

In multivariant systems, several energetically degenerate low temperature domain states can be produced at the structural phase transition. Coexistence of these domain states can produce mesoscopic structures that possess symmetries distinct from the microscopic single domain crystal symmetry. Such engineered domain structures in certain ferroelectric materials have been proven to give superior piezoelectric properties and extremely soft shear moduli. The objective of this article is to consider the variety of symmetries that can be produced through domain average engineering in proper ferroelectric systems arising from the cubic Pm[overline 3]m symmetry perovskite structure.

Computation Of Effectiveness Factors For Partially Wetted Catalyst Pellets Using The Method Of Fundamental Solution, E. Palmisano, P. A. Ramachandran, K. Balakrishnan, M. (Muthanna) H. Al-Dahhan

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Trickle Bed Reactors Are Widely Used in Many Process Industries. the Catalyst Particles Are Often Incompletely Wetted Especially in the Trickling Flow Regime and Hence to Design These Reactors, the Effectiveness Factor of Partially Wetted Catalyst Needs to Be Calculated Accurately. Numerical Solutions by Traditional Methods Are Time Consuming and Not Very Accurate, Especially for Some Commonly Used Complex Catalyst Shapes Such as Trilobes, Quadrilobes Etc. the Paper Presents a Novel Numerical Solution for These Problems based on the Method of Fundamental Solutions. the Advantage of the Method is that It Involves Only Boundary Collocation and Can Be Applied to …

National Identity Cards: Fourth And Fifth Amendment Issues, Daniel J. Steinbock Oct 2003

National Identity Cards: Fourth And Fifth Amendment Issues, Daniel J. Steinbock

ExpressO

In the past two years there have been serious calls for a national identity system whose centerpiece would be some form of national identity card. Such a system is seen mainly as a tool against terrorists, but also as a useful response to illegal immigration, identity theft, and electoral fraud. Both proponents and opponents have noted the potential constitutional problems of such an identity system, but as yet there has been no published legal analysis of these questions. This article aims to fill that gap by analyzing the Fourth and Fifth Amendment issues in two major features of any likely …

The Internal Revenue Code As Sodomy Statute, Anthony C. Infanti Oct 2003

The Internal Revenue Code As Sodomy Statute, Anthony C. Infanti

ExpressO

This essay attempts to bridge the gap between gay and straight understanding of the Internal Revenue Code’s impact on gay and lesbian couples. Through a combination of personal narrative and legal analysis, I try to explain how, from a gay perspective, the Code can be viewed as discriminating against gay and lesbian couples – regardless of whether, on a net basis, they are required to pay more or less tax than similarly-situated straight couples.
