Partnerships Of Nonprofit Organizations And Business For The Development Of Community Social Welfare Activities: The American Experience, Roger A. Lohmann Oct 2003

Partnerships Of Nonprofit Organizations And Business For The Development Of Community Social Welfare Activities: The American Experience, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Partnerships between traditionally non-profit social services (the theme of the conference), funded by various donative arrangements and subsidized by government contracts, and any type of commercial business ventures are still relative rare in the mainstream of U.S. social work today. We can identify three distinct positions on the question among scholars in the U.S. today: A general management perspective found in business schools, a public affairs perspective found in schools of public administration, and two perspectives among social workers. The vast majority of those social work have undoubtedly never heard of this issue. Yet, a very small portion of social …

Spring Distribution Of Ring-Necked Pheasants (Phasianus Colchicus) Following Cattail Reduction With Glyphosate Herbicide, H.J. Homan, G. M. Linz, R.C. Carlson, W.J. Bleier Oct 2003

Spring Distribution Of Ring-Necked Pheasants (Phasianus Colchicus) Following Cattail Reduction With Glyphosate Herbicide, H.J. Homan, G. M. Linz, R.C. Carlson, W.J. Bleier

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

To reduce blackbird (Icteridae) damage to field crops in the north-central United States. dense stands of cattail (Typha spp. ) are thinned with glyphosate herbicide. The stands become unusable as roosting and loafing sites, which helps to protect susceptible crops nearby, particularly sunflower (Helianthus annus). Landscape-level impacts of cattail management on non-target avian species have not been studied. We measured use of upland breeding territories by male ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchieus) following cattail reduction in wetlands used by pheasants for overwintering. In August 1992, glyphosate was applied to all wetlands with ≥70% cattail coverage in …

Stored-Crop Loss Due To Deer Consumption, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Michael J. Pipas, Phil Peterson, Scott F. Beckerman Oct 2003

Stored-Crop Loss Due To Deer Consumption, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Michael J. Pipas, Phil Peterson, Scott F. Beckerman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Deer (Odocoileus spp.) cause an estimated loss of $100 million in United States agricultural production each year (Conover 1997). In 1984 the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection surveyed producers in the state and estimated that white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) damage to all agricultural products exceeded $36 million annually (Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection 1984). Nationwide, for stored crops alone, wildlife reportedly caused $26 million in losses in 1989 (Wywialowski 1994). Despite sometimes biased producer estimates of the value of wildlife-caused losses (Wywialowski 1994), many landowners are willing to accept a …

Evaluation Of An Animal-Activated Scarecrow And A Monofilament Fence For Reducing Deer Use Of Soybean Fields, Jeff Beringer, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Joshua J. Millspaugh Oct 2003

Evaluation Of An Animal-Activated Scarecrow And A Monofilament Fence For Reducing Deer Use Of Soybean Fields, Jeff Beringer, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Joshua J. Millspaugh

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We measured the efficacy of an animal-activated scarecrow (AAS) and a 5-strand monofilament fence (MF) at reducing white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) use of 0.4-ha soybean plots in Missouri, USA. Our study design consisted of 9 soybean plots; 3 served as controls, 3 were surrounded by an MF, and 3 were surrounded by an AAS. Data collected for each protected plot included soybean height and weight taken from within and immediately adjacent to 10 unprotected, equally spaced 1 -m2 exclosures. A measure of deer use for each plot was collected with video cameras. A mixed-effects analysis of variance …

Deterministic Solutions For A Step-Growth Polymerization, Sungjae Choi, Xiangdong Liu, Delmar C. Timm Oct 2003

Deterministic Solutions For A Step-Growth Polymerization, Sungjae Choi, Xiangdong Liu, Delmar C. Timm

Papers in Molecular Chemistry

Chain topology, including branch node, chain link and cross-link dynamics that contribute to the number of elastically active strands and junctions, are calculated using purely deterministic derivations. Solutions are not coupled to population density distributions. An eigenzeit transformation assists in the conversion of expressions derived by chemical reaction principles from time to conversion space, yielding transport phenomena type expressions where the rate of change in the molar concentrations of branch nodes with respect to conversion is expressed as functions of the fraction of reactive sites on precursors and reactants. Analogies are hypothesized to exist in cross-linking space that effectively distribute …

Energy And Transient Power Minimization During Behavioral Synthesis, Saraju P. Mohanty Oct 2003

Energy And Transient Power Minimization During Behavioral Synthesis, Saraju P. Mohanty

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The proliferation of portable systems and mobile computing platforms has increased the need for the design of low power consuming integrated circuits. The increase in chip density and clock frequencies due to technology advances has made low power design a critical issue. Low power design is further driven by several other factors such as thermal considerations and environmental concerns. In low-power design for battery driven portable applications, the reduction of peak power, peak power differential, average power and energy are equally important. In this dissertation, we propose a framework for the reduction of these parameters through datapath scheduling at behavioral …

Temporal And Spatial Variability Of Microclimate And Permafrost Conditions In Fairbanks Regions, Alaska, Galina E. Yershova Oct 2003

Temporal And Spatial Variability Of Microclimate And Permafrost Conditions In Fairbanks Regions, Alaska, Galina E. Yershova

Geosciences

Spatial variability of the climate and permafrost conditions in the Fairbanks region was studied using the temperature measurements at a number of sites in the area of approximately 100x100 km around Fairbanks. The effect of climatic and surface parameters (air temperature, vegetation and snow cover, soil properties including water content) on thermal regime of the ground was studied using the temperature and water content measurements at five sites that represent various landscapes and form the Smith Lake profile. The effect of the topographic gradient and slope aspect on the thermal regime of the ground was studied using the temperature measurements …

Indianapolis V. Edmond And The Original Understanding Of The Fourth Amendment, Bruce Newman Oct 2003

Indianapolis V. Edmond And The Original Understanding Of The Fourth Amendment, Bruce Newman

ExpressO

In this article I examine to what extent Indianapolis v. Edmond is in keeping with the original understanding of the Fourth Amendment. I conclude that the Founders were much more concerned with searches of real property, often insisting, not only on suspicion, but also a on warrant when searches of real property are involved. Secondly, while the Founders did not consider warrants necessary for searches and seizures off of real property (which for the sake of simplicity I call searches in public areas) the evidence suggests suspicion was required. Indeed, the Fourth Amendment was a direct response to the British …
