Gravitational Radiation From Pulsating White Dwarfs, Matthew Benacquista, M. Benacquista, D. M. Sedrakian, M. V. Hairapetyan, K. M. Shahabasyan, A. A. Sadoyan Oct 2003

Gravitational Radiation From Pulsating White Dwarfs, Matthew Benacquista, M. Benacquista, D. M. Sedrakian, M. V. Hairapetyan, K. M. Shahabasyan, A. A. Sadoyan

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Rotating white dwarfs undergoing quasi-radial oscillations can emit gravitational radiation in a frequency range from 0.1 to 0.3 Hz. Assuming that the energy source for the gravitational radiation comes from the oblateness of the white dwarf induced by the rotation, the strain amplitude is found to be ∼10-27 for a white dwarf at ∼50 pc. The Galactic population of these sources is estimated to be ∼107 and may produce a confusion-limited foreground for proposed advanced detectors in the frequency band between space-based and ground-based interferometers. Nearby oscillating white dwarfs may provide a clear enough signal to investigate white dwarf interiors …

Using The Intensity Modulation Index To Test Pulsar Radio Emission Models, Fredrick A. Jenet, Janusz Gil Oct 2003

Using The Intensity Modulation Index To Test Pulsar Radio Emission Models, Fredrick A. Jenet, Janusz Gil

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

This Letter explores the possibility of testing pulsar radio emission models by observing pulse-to-pulse intensity modulation. It is shown that a relationship between a pulsar's period, period derivative, and intensity modulation is a natural consequence of at least one theoretical model of radio pulsar emission. It is proposed that other models may also predict a similar correlation. The exact form of the relationship will depend on the model in question. Hence, observations of intensity modulation should be able to determine the validity of the various emission models. In an attempt to search for the predicted dependencies, the modulation properties of …

Falling In And Out Of Love: The Impact Of Moving To A Remote Location On Cataloging Workflow, Jean Dickinson, Charity K. Martin, Margaret Mering Oct 2003

Falling In And Out Of Love: The Impact Of Moving To A Remote Location On Cataloging Workflow, Jean Dickinson, Charity K. Martin, Margaret Mering

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

As academic libraries undergo renovation and building projects, various technical service operations are frequently moved out of the main building and housed in an off-site location. The aim of this research was to discover, by means of a questionnaire, what the impact of such a move is on the workflow of professional catalogers. The researchers concluded that a positive experience on the part of the catalogers depends upon detailed planning, thoughtful administrative support, and an element of luck. However, some problems are unavoidable in moving catalogers away from the main collection.

Assisted Living: Internal Communication To Align Identity And Image, Katherine Pittman Govito Oct 2003

Assisted Living: Internal Communication To Align Identity And Image, Katherine Pittman Govito

Theses and Dissertations

Accomplishment of the mission of any organization relies on relationships developed. Key to these relationships is an internal communication program. As a function of public relations, the value of an internal communication program must be recognized as a requirement and implemented to achieve objectives set forth in an organization's mission statement.

This case study established the core elements of the mission statement of Meadow Glen, an assisted-living facility. The researcher evaluated its internal communication program by conducting surveys of Meadow Glen's three central internal relationships to measure alignment of its identity with its image. The three groups surveyed were: employees, …

Human Resource Management In Practice: A Case Study Of State Bank Of Pakistan, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

I am happy to address this august gathering of Human Resource Professionals. I had two options this morning. The first was to repeat the clichés and platitudes about the importance of human resource management in economic development and for organizational effectiveness. But considering that all of you are highly qualified practitioners in this field. I thought you would find this kind of address boring and unsatisfactory. Therefore, being faithful to the theme of this Conference I decided to present a case study at this session. Without being self-serving, I would like to share the lessons we have learnt during the …
