Alu elements have inserted in primate genomes throughout the evolution of the order. One particular Alu lineage (Ye) began amplifying relatively early in hominid evolution and continued propagating at a low level as many of its members are found in a variety of hominid genomes. This study represents the first conclusive application of short interspersed elements, which are considered nearly homoplasy-free, to elucidate the phylogeny of hominids. Phylogenetic analysis of Alu Ye5 elements and elements from several other subfamilies reveals high levels of support for monophyly of Hominidae, tribe Hominini and subtribe Hominina. Here we present the strongest evidence reported …

A Probability-Based Similarity Measure For Saupe Alignment Tensors With Applications To Residual Dipolar Couplings In Nmr Structural Biology, Anthony K. Yan, Christopher J. Langmead, Bruce Randall Donald

Computer Science Technical Reports

High-throughput NMR structural biology and NMR structural genomics pose a fascinating set of geometric challenges. A key bottleneck in NMR structural biology is the resonance assignment problem. We seek to accelerate protein NMR resonance assignment and structure determination by exploiting a priori structural information. In particular, a method known as Nuclear Vector Replacement (NVR) has been proposed as a method for solving the assignment problem given a priori structural information [24,25]. Among several different kinds of input data, NVR uses a particular type of NMR data known as residual dipolar couplings (RDCs). The basic physics of residual dipolar couplings tells …

Dynamics Underlying Fully Differential Cross Sections For Fast C⁶⁺ + He Collisions, Ronald E. Olson, J. Fiol Oct 2003

Dynamics Underlying Fully Differential Cross Sections For Fast C⁶⁺ + He Collisions, Ronald E. Olson, J. Fiol

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Single ionization of helium by impact of 100 MeV u-1 C6+ ions is investigated using the three-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. Fully differential cross section calculations are compared to recently published data for ionized electrons emitted both in the scattering plane, and in the plane perpendicular to it that contains the initial velocity. the present calculations show good agreement with the experimental data, and improve upon continuum-distorted-wave results. the collision mechanisms that lead to the different structures observed in the fully differential cross sections are investigated and include those of the binary and recoil peaks for in-plane …

Claiming Opportunities: A Handbook For Improving Education For English Language Learners Through Comprehensive School Reform, Maria Coady, Edmund T. Hamann, Margaret Harrington, Maria Pacheco, Samboeun Pho, Jane Yedlin Oct 2003

Claiming Opportunities: A Handbook For Improving Education For English Language Learners Through Comprehensive School Reform, Maria Coady, Edmund T. Hamann, Margaret Harrington, Maria Pacheco, Samboeun Pho, Jane Yedlin

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

For the last decade, the national comprehensive school reform movement has been a focus of efforts to make public education accessible and effective for all students. Comprehensive reform strives to improve schooling for all children through integrated, well-aligned, school- wide changes in instruction, assessment, curriculum, classroom management, school governance, professional development, technical assistance, and community participation. As a sign of its continuing support for comprehensive school reform, Congress formally incorporated the Comprehensive School Reform program (CSR) into the Elementary and Secondary Act (No Child Left Behind, or NCLB) of 2001.

The last decade has also seen a dramatic increase in …

Ancient Maize From Chacoan Great Houses: Where Was It Grown?, Larry Benson, Linda Cordell, Kirk Vincent, Howard E. Taylor, John Stein, G. Lang Farmer, U.S. Geological Survey

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

In this article, we compare chemical (87Sr/86Sr and elemental) analyses of archaeological maize from dated contexts within Pueblo Bonito, Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, to potential agricultural sites on the periphery of the San Juan Basin. The oldest maize analyzed from Pueblo Bonito probably was grown in an area located 80 km to the west at the base of the Chuska Mountains. The youngest maize came from the San Juan or Animas river floodplains 90 km to the north. This article demonstrates that maize, a dietary staple of southwestern Native Americans, was transported over considerable distances in …

Development Of A Mechanistic Understanding Of High-Temperature Deformation Of Alloy Ep-823 For Transmutation Applications: Annual Progress Report (September 2002 – August 2003), Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole Oct 2003

Development Of A Mechanistic Understanding Of High-Temperature Deformation Of Alloy Ep-823 For Transmutation Applications: Annual Progress Report (September 2002 – August 2003), Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the elevated temperature tensile properties of Alloy EP-823, a leading structural target material for accelerator-driven waste transmutation applications. This alloy has been proven to be an excellent structural material to contain the molten lead-bismuth-eutectic (LBE) nuclear coolant needed for fast spectrum operations. Very little data exist in the open literature on the tensile properties of this martensitic alloy. Three different heats of this material, produced by vacuum induction melting, were thermally treated to produce fully-tempered martensitic microstructure without any retained austenite (Table I). Cylindrical specimens were fabricated from the heat-treated round bars …

Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Organic Matrix, Spencer M. Steinberg, David W. Emerson, Gary Cerefice Oct 2003

Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Organic Matrix, Spencer M. Steinberg, David W. Emerson, Gary Cerefice

Separations Campaign (TRP)

The recovery of iodine released during the processing of used nuclear fuel poses a significant challenge to the transmutation of radioactive iodine. During the first year of this program we have examined the potential of Fullerene Containing Carbon compounds (FCC) developed by KRI, and natural organic matter (NOM) as sorbents for iodine released during the reprocessing of nuclear fuel. This work involved the development of bench-scale testing of the FCC and NOM material in a simulated process off-gas environment.

During the first two quarters of this program we explored various analytical methods available for measurement of iodine, iodide, and iodate. …
