Though Islam is a political factor throughout Southeast Asia, this paper argues that Islamic fundamentalism does not necessarily govern political life. It also questions generalizations about the increase in political Islamic fundamentalism in the region perceived by the press and American sympathizers. By sketching the roots of the violent conflict in the far south of Thailand, the predominantly Muslim region of the Kingdom, it argues that the violence has been caused not only by Islamic militants consisting of Thai terrorists and Muslim separatist groups who have sought foreign assistance and fought against the Thai state's oppression but also by the …

Pulmonary fibrosis due to acute or chronic occupational exposures is the leading cause of work-related illness in the U.S. according to the 2002 report by the American Lung Association. Asbestosis and silicosis are well described lung diseases that result from asbestos fiber or crystalline silica inhalation, respectively. This study investigated the underlying lung inflammatory and fibrotic mechanisms involved in the response caused by exposure to crystalline silica (α-quartz) or JM-100 glass, chrysotile asbestos, and ceramic fibers. Thermolysis of the benzannulated enyne-carbodiimides provides easy access to a variety of pyrido[1′,2′:1,2]pyrimido[4,5- b]indoles and related heteroaromatic compounds. Methylation of some of these new compounds with methyl iodide occurs exclusively at the site of the indolo nitrogen. The simplicity of the reaction sequence makes the process especially attractive for the synthesis of novel heteroaromatic compounds as potential DNA-intercalating agents. The formation of pyrimido[6 ′,1′:2,3]pyrimido[4,5-b]indoles was unexpected and likely involved a novel [2+2] cycloaddition pathway of the benzannulated enyne-carbodiimides. Similarly, several novel heteroaromatics structurally related to ellipticine alkaloids are synthesized by thermolysis of the pyridannulated enyne-carbodiimides. Numerous studies conclude that parent involvement in education benefits student achievement and improves the overall quality of schools. However, limited descriptive evidence exists that beginning teachers are being acculturated to parent involvement. The voice of the beginning teacher is relatively silent in the parent involvement literature. This study used the Delphi Technique of forecasting and a panel of individuals having the knowledge of the University Housing Profession to ascertain the likelihood of events to happen within the next 20 years and the level of impact of those events upon the profession. Methodology. Six nominators selected for their expertise within the University Housing Profession nominated individuals to serve as expert panelists. Eighty-three individuals were nominated. The 22 individuals with more than two nominations were invited to participate while the remaining panelists were selected randomly. Little is known about nest tree use of the endangered Virginia northern flying squirrel. I compared characteristics of nest trees used by Virginia northern flying squirrels with randomly selected trees during summer and fall of 2000 and 2001. I tracked 13 squirrels to 59 nest trees. Sixty-nine percent of the nests were in cavities and 31% were leaf nests. Yellow birch, black birch and American beech were selected for nest trees more than expected. Nest trees were in larger and taller trees than trees in the surrounding area. There were a significant number of trees located near skidder and hiking …

The present study assessed the effectiveness of cognitive and relaxation interventions on injured athletes' mood, pain, optimism, and adherence and compliance to rehabilitation. The total number of participants who completed this study was seven injured athletes (two females and five males) representing one NCAA Division I university (n = 6) and one NCAA Division II university (n = 1). All athletes incurred their injuries during participation in their sports and had surgery within one month prior to their season or during their competitive season. Background. Moral distress is a pervasive problem in nursing, contributing to loss of nurses' ethical integrity, dissatisfaction with the work of nursing, and loss of nurses from the workforce. The purpose of this research was twofold: to further elucidate the experiences and consequences of professional nurses' moral distress and to formulate a logical, systematic, and explanatory theory of moral distress and its consequences. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electron-nuclear double resonance (EN-DOR) have been used to identify and characterize point defects in nonlinear optical crystals of lithium triborate (LiB3O5) and beta barium borate (β-BaB2O4). Two similar hole centers, one (Hole Center A) stable below approximately 130 K and the other one (Hole Center B) stable below approximately 170 K, were observed in LiB3O 5. For both centers, there is a major hyperfine interaction with only one 11B nucleus. The g matrix and the 11B hyperfine and nuclear quadrupole matrices have been determined for each hole center. This nonexperimental, descriptive, correlational study addressed the problem of consistency and fairness in evaluating student nurses' reflective writing for evidence of critical thinking. The purposes were twofold: To describe the relationships among teacher ratings, cognitive word use, and a standardized measure of critical thinking in baccalaureate nursing students; and to describe the extent that teacher ratings and cognitive word use are predictive of a standardized measure of critical thinking. This study traces the flowering of Western scientific exploration during the fifteen years following the Civil War. During these years, the empirical modes of perception and representation associated with Western exploration gained growing cultural authority and increasingly came to frame discussions of Western policy. At the same time, the systematic exploration of the West revealed the region in new and sometimes startling ways, in some cases prompting far-reaching revisions in the nation's self-perception. In several earlier columns, I suggested that judges are usually poorly placed to make good biomedical policy, not least because the law so rarely offers them direct and cogent guidance. Recently, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit proffered a new example of this old problem. In 1996, California's voters approved Proposition 215. Its "Compassionate Use Act of 1996" provided -that a patient "who possesses or cultivates marijuana for the personal medical purposes of the patient upon the written or oral recommendation or approval of a physician" committed no crime.

Alcohol exposure causes developmental abnormality known as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), featured with central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction. The cerebellum is vulnerable to ethanol toxicity. Developmental exposure to ethanol depletes the number of cerebellar granule cells; however, the underlying mechanisms are unknown. A potential mechanism for ethanol-induced neuronal depletion is to reduce the pool of neuronal progenitors. The progression of the cell cycle is regulated by a family of protein kinases called cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs). We hypothesize that ethanol interferes with the CDK system and disrupts the cell cycle kinetics in cerebellar granule progenitors (CGPs). Pregnant rats were fed ad …

In this thesis, we investigate an inverse boundary value problem arising from the study of semiconductor transistors. The problem is to recover a number of parameters in the coefficient function from the knowledge of the solution at some accessible boundary. We first review the mathematical models that describe the current flow in a transistor into an integrated circuit. The impacts of year-to-year and decade-to-decade climatic variations on some of the Pacific Northwest’s key natural resources can be quantified to estimate sensitivity to regional climatic changes expected as part of anthropogenic global climatic change. Warmer, drier years, often associated with El Niño events and/or the warm phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, tend to be associated with below-average snowpack, streamflow, and flood risk, below-average salmon survival, below-average forest growth, and above-average risk of forest fire. This essay responds to D. Davis and W. C. Follette (2002), who question the value of motive evidence in murder cases. They argue that the evidence that a husband had extramartial affairs, that he heavily insured his wife's life, or that he battered his wife is ordinarily of infinitesimal probative value. We disagree. To be sure, it would be foolish to predict solely on the basis of such evidence that a husband will murder his wife. Today, nonpoint source (NPS) pollution remains as the leading cause of water quality problems in the United States (USEPA, 1996). The most common NPS pollutants are sediment (i.e. total suspended solids, TSS) and nutrients (i.e. total nitrogen, TN). These wash into water bodies from agricultural land, construction sites, and other areas of disturbance. To develop the virtual non-point source assessment system (VNPSAS) model, monitoring gauges were selected for data extraction from West Virginia and also the western part of Virginia.
