Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The study was designed to elicit some basic information on the effect of different pressing and scalding treatments applied to the curd with special reference to the standardization of Maraş cheese. For each experiment six different samples (IA, IB, IC, IIA, IIB, IIC) were used. The samples were manufactured experimentally by applying three different scalding treatments, 70 ± 1 ^oC/5 min. (A) , 75 ± 1 ^oC/5 min. (B) and 80 ± 1 ^oC/5 min (C), to each of two curds pressed for 1 h by 1:5 kg (I) and 1.5:5 kg (II) weights of milk used. All experimental samples …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out to determine the normal haematological and biochemical parameters of clinically healthy ostriches 1-3 years old of either sex. Red blood cells, white blood cells, haematocrit and haemoglobin values (as haematological parameters) and glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, urea, kreatinine, serum enzymes (ALP, AST, ALT, GGT, CK, amilase) (as biochemical parameters) and electrolytes (Ca, P, Mg, Zn, Cu, Na, K, Cl) levels were measured. It was concluded that the values obtained in this study could be used as reference values for ostriches.

The Presence, Isolation And Characterisation Of Galectin-1 In Bovine Adrenal Gland, Kami̇l Seyrek Jan 2003

The Presence, Isolation And Characterisation Of Galectin-1 In Bovine Adrenal Gland, Kami̇l Seyrek

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The mammalian adrenal gland in the developmental stage provides excellent system for studying the role(s) of lectins in the foetal period because the adrenal gland is composed of two separate endocrine organs which differ in embryologic origin, type of secretion, and function. There is no information on the presence of galectin-1 or galectin-1 reactive glycoconjugates in the development of the bovine adrenal gland. Therefore, the present study focused on this protein. For separation of galectin-1 dialysis, affinity chromatography and SDS-PAGE were used. To monitor the localisation of galectin-1 and its epitopes immunhistochemistry was used. A single 14-kD band comigrated with …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, 627 live freshwater mussels collected from the Koçkale and Pertek regions of Keban Dam Lake were examined for the presence of Salmonella spp. Homogenates prepared from the soft tissue of mussels, after pre-enrichment in Rappaport Vasilliadis, were inoculated onto Brilliant Green Phenol Red Lactose agar and Salmonella-Shigella selective media. Biochemical tests and DNA extraction were carried out on isolates suspected of containing Salmonella. From 19 (4.8%) out of 397 mussels collected in the Koçkale region, Salmonella spp. were isolated and identified, but the agent could not be detected in mussels obtained from the Pertek region. DNA extracted …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, Rinderpest virus (RPV) recombinant hemagglutinine protein (rH) fused with protein A region of Staphylococcus aureus was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified by IgG affinity chromatography. rH protein was also used to establish enzyme immunoassay. Therefore, to prevent IgG binding to the protein A the wells coated with the rH proteins were blocked by human serum. Afterwards, RPV antigens were added to the wells to evaluate this assay. To this end, serum from mice immunized with RPV was used for EIA. Our data indicated that the rH protein fused with protein A of Staphylococcus aureus can be …

Expression Profiles Of Igf-I, Igf-Ii, Bfgf And Tgf-B2 Growth Factors During Chicken Embryonic Development, Hakan Kocamiş, John Killefer Jan 2003

Expression Profiles Of Igf-I, Igf-Ii, Bfgf And Tgf-B2 Growth Factors During Chicken Embryonic Development, Hakan Kocamiş, John Killefer

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Skeletal muscle development in avian embryos depends on the activation, proliferation, differentiation, and fusion of embryonic myoblasts. These processes as well as early embryonic development are mainly regulated by major growth factors such as IGF-I, IGF-II, TGF-b and FGFs. In order to determine their differential expression, total RNA was isolated from whole embryos on each of the embryonal days (E) 0 to 6, from the thoracic/abdominal half of the embryo at E 7 and E 8, and from pectoralis muscle tissues at E 9 to E 20. Growth factor cDNAs were synthesized by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). All growth …

Heparinised blood collected from these three species were analysed within 3 h of collection. Erythrocyte suspensions were mixed with MBCD to give concentrations of 2 mM, 4 mM or 6 mM cyclodextrin. The mixtures were incubated for 30 min at 37 °C and centrifuged. …

Changes In Adenosine Nucleotides In The Heart Tissue Of Rats Following Different Types Of Death, Sadretti̇n Pençe, Hasan Koçoğlu, Naci̇ye Kurtul, Hali̇me Hanim Pençe, Cahi̇t Bağci

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Forty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were killed by cervical dislocation, electric shock and drowning to investigate the correlations between types of death and levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and adenosine monophosphate (AMP) in heart tissue after death. The hearts were taken out after death and ATP, ADP and AMP levels in the heart muscle were measured. The ATP and ADP levels were lower in rats killed by electric shock and with drowning. This may be due to ventricular fibrillation caused by electric shock in the electric shock group, and debilitation of rats in the drowning group before death, which …

Comparison Of The Tocolytic Effects Of Ritodrine And Ca^{++} Channel Blockers On Serum Oestradiol And Progesterone Levels, Füsun Tosun, Aymelek Gönenç, Bolkan Şi̇mşek

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Experimental pregnancy was induced with gonadal steroids in in vivo ovariectomized rats. Conditions for premature delivery were established by giving a salt-rich diet and administering oxytocin to induce high-risk pregnancy. In order to avoid early delivery, a betamimetic ritodrine and the Ca^{++} channel blockers nitrendipine and nicardipine were administered to three separate groups. The effects of these three tocolytic agents were examined by determining serum oestradiol and progesterone levels. Additionally, systolic blood pressure was measured and tachycardia was observed. After the administration of tocolytic agents, it was observed that serum oestradiol levels were increased while there was a decrease in …

Optimisation Of Uv Treatment Duration To Induce Haploid Androgenesis In The Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus L.), İsmi̇han Karayücel, Sedat Karayücel

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The optimum UV duration times of eggs were examined in order to develop a simple and safe method for inducing androgenetic development in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. The yield of androgenetic haploid O. niloticus to the pigmentation stage was 18.53 ± 5.3% (relative to controls) with an optimal UV irradiation dose of 540 Jm^{-2} (at 150 µWcm^{-2 }) for 6 min. Most embryos developing after fertilisation with normal spermatozoa showed abnormal morphology and a haploid number of chromosomes (n = 22). The success of oocyte denucleation was also assessed by using the recessive "blond" skin pigmentation character.
