A Reinterpretation Of Historical Gender Bias And Women's Mental Health, Jacqueline Lindsay Novak Jan 2003

A Reinterpretation Of Historical Gender Bias And Women's Mental Health, Jacqueline Lindsay Novak

Student Work

This epistemological review suggests that gender stereotypes and oppression have occurred throughout history and reflects past and present portrayals of women, particularly, the reflection of stereotypes and oppression cause women to suffer mental health consequences in two ways. First, societal oppression reduces and enforces women to an inferior status, which promotes mental health suffering and consequences. Second, women suffer from biased assessments, diagnoses, and treatment via hierarchical relationships and gender stereotypes from professionals. Presently, women are maintained at this subordinate position due to a lack of people and policies enforcing health standards specifically for women.

Analyzing Erp Implementation At A Public University Using The Innovation Strategy Model, Keng Siau, J. Messersmith

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have revolutionized the way companies are using information technology in their businesses. ERP was created in an effort to streamline business processes and has proven to be successful in many operations. Unfortunately, not all ERP implementations have met expectations. One way that businesses may be able to increase success rates is to embrace creativity and innovation in their ERP implementations. For businesses to do this, they must first understand how creativity originates and how that creativity can be integrated into business solutions. This article presents a case study that examines the ERP implementation at a …

The Social Context Of Norse Jarlshof, Marcie Anne Kimball Jan 2003

The Social Context Of Norse Jarlshof, Marcie Anne Kimball

LSU Master's Theses

A series of excavations from 1897 to 1951 showed the site of Jarlshof in Shetland to have been occupied by proto-Pictish, Pictish, and Viking peoples. These inquiries culminated in J.R.C. Hamilton’s 1956 monograph Excavations at Jarlshof, Shetland. In the years since the writing of the monograph, much new information has come to light that relates to the time periods found at Jarlshof. The concern of this thesis is how the new findings relate to Viking Age Jarlshof and how Viking Age Jarlshof relates to this new information. In order to set Viking Age Jarlshof into its overall historical context regarding …

Democracy Realized One Classroom At A Time, Peter Goodrich Jan 2003

Democracy Realized One Classroom At A Time, Peter Goodrich

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article critiques the traditional hierarchy and exclusivity of legal academic publishing, particularly in law reviews, by exploring the radical potential of publishing student seminar contributions. It argues that such collective expression challenges the conventional norms of legal scholarship, democratizes the classroom, and reimagines the relationship between teachers and students. The symposium discussed in the article exemplifies this shift, showcasing diverse voices and experiences that disrupt the homogeneous style and substance of traditional legal publishing.

The basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) proteins are intimately associated with developmental events such as cell differentiation and lineage commitment. The HLH domain in the bHLH motif is responsible for dimerization whereas the basic region mediates sequence specific DNA binding. Human DEC, mouse STRA and rat SHARP proteins represent a new c lass of bHLH proteins. In each species, two members are identified with a sequence identity of>90% in the bHLH region and - 40% in the total protein, respectively. Based on sequence alignment and domain analysis, DEC/STRA/SHARP proteins show high s imilarities (- 40%) to Drosoph ila Hairy and E(spl) …

Publications

We confirm and extend our previous detection of a popula- tion of intergalactic globular clusters in Abell 1185, and report the first discovery of an intergalactic globular cluster in the nearby Virgo cluster of galaxies. The numbers, colors and luminosities of these objects can place constraints on their origin, which in turn may yield new insights to the evolution of galaxies in dense environments.

Micropropagation Of Carnivorous Plants, Kenneth Stephen Uhnak Jan 2003

Micropropagation Of Carnivorous Plants, Kenneth Stephen Uhnak

Open Access Dissertations

A simple, efficient system for seed surface disinfestation and in vitro germination was developed for the carnivorous pitcher plants Darlingtonia californica and Sarracenia leucophylla. Of the disinfectants tested, hydrogen peroxide or 10% Clorox® were most effective for disinfesting seeds of D. californica, while concentrated sulfuric acid worked best for S. leucophylla. Differences in the effectiveness of sterilants were associated by differences in seed coat morphology. Seeds of D. californica imbibed at 4-7°C in sterile deionized water with surfactant and gibberellin germinated earlier than seeds without exposure to gibberellin. Unimbibed seeds of S. leucophylla germinated …

Late Miocene-Pliocene Detachment Faulting And Pliocene-Recent Basin-And-Range Extension Inferred From Dismembered Rift Basins Of The Salt Lake Formation, Se Idaho, Susanne U. Janecke, S. M. Carney, M. E. Perkins, J. C. Evans, P. K. Link, R. Q. Oaks Jr., B. P. Nash

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Geologic mapping, basin analysis, and tephra correlations in the Clifton and Malad City East 7.5-minute quadrangles in southeastern Idaho indicate that the modern Basin-and-Range topography is only a few million years old and was superimposed on unrelated rift basins associated with the ~12 to < 4 Ma Bannock detachment system. The Miocene-Pliocene Salt Lake Formation in the greater Cache Valley area was deposited during three sub-episodes of west-southwest extension on the Bannock detachment system.

Depositional systems within the Salt Lake Formation (>10.27 ± 0.07 Ma to < 5.1-4.4 Ma) evolved in response to the changing structural configuration of rift basins in the hanging wall of the Bannock detachment system. Early alluvial fans derived from the underlying Paleozoic rocks were replaced by broad, saline/alkaline lakes during the translation phase on the detachment fault. Later, as the hanging wall broke up internally, freshwater lakes and deltas occupied newly created NE-tilted half graben, and eventually filled them with braided streams. The Bannock detachment system collapsed the Cache-Pocatello Culmination of the dormant Sevier fold-and-thrust belt, much like the Sevier Desert Detachment collapsed the Sevier Culmination and the Wasatch Fault collapsed the Wasatch Culmination.

Deposition and tilting of the Salt Lake Formation ceased in the middle to late Pliocene (< 2 >Ma?) before uplift of the Clifton Horst along a new system of Basin-and-Range normal faults. This later episode of normal faulting uplifted and exposed metamorphic rocks in …

Sliding Mode Control Of An Unmanned Air-Vehicle System, Jayakrishna Vanaparthy Jan 2003

Sliding Mode Control Of An Unmanned Air-Vehicle System, Jayakrishna Vanaparthy

Theses

The objective of this study is to design a Controller that is stable under varying conditions of system parameters from the trim conditions and also robust for parametric variation for an Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) System. The PID and Sliding Mode Controller are the control models for the UAV system that are studied, designed and analyzed. The proposed Sliding Mode Controller was applied to a nonlinear second order system (Single Input Single Output (SISO)) and tested for stability and robustness of the system for parametric variation. The control model indicated chattering effect with switching (signum) function. Therefore, in order to …

A Practical Guide To Understanding Wireless Networking Concepts, Security Protocols, Attack, And Safer Deployment Schemes, Jay Yip Jan 2003

A Practical Guide To Understanding Wireless Networking Concepts, Security Protocols, Attack, And Safer Deployment Schemes, Jay Yip

Theses

With the explosion of wireless networks appearing in buildings, business and educational campuses, and even homes; security is a large concern in order to prevent attempted intrusions and malicious attacks from the retrieval of confidential data. Wireless Fidelity, Wi-Fi for short, does provide security in the form called Wired Equivalent Privacy otherwise simply known as WEP. However cases documenting WEP's security mechanism being breached in legitimate and illegitimate cases have been published and are readily available on the Internet. While wireless networks provide the freedom of mobility for users, this also allows potential hackers to eavesdrop on unsuspecting wireless users. …

Victim Wrongs: The Case For A General Criminal Defense Based On Wrongful Victim Behavior In An Era Of Victims' Rights, Aya Gruber

Publications

Criminal law scholarship is rife with analysis of the victims' rights movement. Many articles identify with the outrage of victims harmed by deviant criminal elements. Other scholarly pieces criticize the movement's denuding of defendants' constitutional trial rights. The point upon which proponents and opponents of the movement tend to agree, however, is that the victim should never be blamed for the crime. The helpless, harmed, innocent victim is someone with whom we can all identify and someone to whom we can all express sympathy. Victim blaming, by all accounts, is an act of legal heresy to feminists, victim advocates, and …

Homicide On Holiday: Prosecutorial Discretion, Popular Culture, And The Boundaries Of The Criminal Law, Carolyn B. Ramsey Jan 2003

Homicide On Holiday: Prosecutorial Discretion, Popular Culture, And The Boundaries Of The Criminal Law, Carolyn B. Ramsey

Publications

This article discusses prosecutors' discretion to press criminal charges against individuals who cause death during recreational activities. Based on newspaper sources, published opinions, and unpublished materials from cases that resulted in plea bargains, Homicide on Holiday continues the author's exploration of the relationship between the American public, criminal prosecutors, and the nature of the prosecutors' public role. It shows that, despite popular culture's glorification of risk and a nationwide trend in tort law toward sheltering sports co-participants from civil negligence liability, an exhilarating trip down a ski slope is increasingly likely to land a skier in jail if he collides …

Modularity, Vertical Integration, And Open Access Policies: Towards A Convergence Of Antitrust And Regulation In The Internet Age, Joseph Farrell, Philip J. Weiser

Publications

Antitrust law and telecommunications regulation have long adopted different stances on whether to mandate open access to information platforms. This article aims to help regulators and commentators incorporate both Chicago School and post-Chicago School arguments in evaluating this basic policy choice, suggesting how they can be integrated in an effective manner. In particular, the authors outline three alternative models that the FCC could adopt to guide its regulation of information platforms and facilitate a true convergence between antitrust and regulatory policy.
