Cracking Of Zirconium Alloys At Constant Load With And Without Applied Potentials, Heidi T Aquino
Cracking Of Zirconium Alloys At Constant Load With And Without Applied Potentials, Heidi T Aquino
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Cladding materials, namely Zircaloy-2 (Zr-2) and Zircaloy-4 (Zr-4), were tested for evaluation of their resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), delayed hydride cracking (DHC), and localized corrosion (pitting and crevice) in neutral and acidic environments at ambient temperature and 90°C. For SCC testing, constant load and slow-strain-rate techniques were used. Some SCC testing were also performed under controlled electrochemical potentials (Econt). The localized corrosion behavior was studied by cyclic potentiodynamic polarization technique. Metallurgical microstructures and fractography were analyzed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The results obtained from this study indicate that no failures were observed under …
Vocabulary Acquisition And The Generation Effect, Barbara Anne Badgett
Vocabulary Acquisition And The Generation Effect, Barbara Anne Badgett
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study investigated two methods of inducing the Generation Effect and how its principles might be incorporated in vocabulary acquisition. Subjects attempted to learn 22 unfamiliar vocabulary words under one of three conditions. (1) definition-only control subjects repeatedly wrote each word and definition; (2) sentence generation subjects wrote each word and definition and then wrote a meaningful sentence using that word; and (3) definition generation subjects read the words embedded in context sentences and extrapolated and wrote the word meanings. Subjects were tested following a distracter task, 48-hours later, and again 21-days later. Significant main effects were found for encoding …

Adaptive, Suboptimal And Nonlinear Control Of An Aeroelastic System, Nilesh G Bhoir
Adaptive, Suboptimal And Nonlinear Control Of An Aeroelastic System, Nilesh G Bhoir
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, control systems are designed for the flutter control of a nonlinear aeroelastic system. The aeroelastic model describes the plunge and pitch motion of a wing. The model includes plunge and pitch nonlinearties, and has a single control surface for the purpose of control. First an output feedback modular adaptive control system is derived. Quasi-steady aerodynamic model is used for the output feedback modular adaptive control system. For the synthesis of the adaptive controller, it is assumed that only pitch angle and plunge displacement are measured. The control system consists of an input-to-state stabilizing controller and a passive …

Qualitative Scoring Procedures For The Detection Of Malingering Using The Wechsler Memory Scale - Third Edition, Joshua E Caron
Qualitative Scoring Procedures For The Detection Of Malingering Using The Wechsler Memory Scale - Third Edition, Joshua E Caron
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Individuals undergoing neuropsychological evaluation are often involved in litigation for compensation. Consequently, much incentive to perform poorly on neuropsychological assessments exists. Thus, sophisticated detection methods are desirable. One promising approach may be to utilize qualitative scoring that provides information regarding the test taking strategy. Many current methods use a single quantitative score to discriminate people who malinger cognitive deficits, which may overlook sensitive information and be less accurate. This study developed and applied qualitative scoring procedures for the WMS-III and evaluated them using four experimental groups: sophisticated malingerer, naive malingerer, normal control, and brain damage. Results were mixed. When added …

Poly(Pyridinium Salt)S Exhibiting Liquid-Crystalline And Light-Emitting Properties, James Joseph Cebe
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The research presented in this thesis is based on the synthesis and characterization of poly(pyridinium salt)s containing tosylate and triflimide counterions that possess both liquid-crystalline properties as well as light emitting properties. Both the solution-state and solid-state emission behavior of these synthesized materials were investigated. They possessed several emission peaks in their spectra ranging from 280 nm to about 550 nm. Some of these polymers were found to form liquid-crystalline properties in common organic solvents such as methanol and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), while others were found to exhibit a liquid-crystalline phase upon melting, and are so-called thermotropic liquid crystals. The polymers …
Form Processing With The Hough Transform, De Chen
Form Processing With The Hough Transform, De Chen
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A form document processing system based on the Hough transform (HT) is developed. It performs form identification and form registration. For form identification, HT is applied off-line to master forms to calculate form features and build-up the feature database, and it is performed on-line for the input (scanned) forms to extract features to identify the form type based on feature matching. The derived features are rotation, translation and scale invariant. The proposed form description is compact, thereby allows for fast identification. The registration is feature/knowledge based. Two methods for control points detection are discussed; one implements template matching for finding …

Assigning complex computation tasks to hardware and exploiting the parallelism and pipelining in algorithms yield significant speedup in running times. In this thesis the image processing algorithms like median filter, basic morphological operators, convolution and edge detection algorithms are implemented on FPGA. A pipelined architecture …
I-Magic Labelings Of Cubic Trees And N-Caterpillars, John Thomas Ethier
I-Magic Labelings Of Cubic Trees And N-Caterpillars, John Thomas Ethier
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Let G be a graph with q edges, then an edge labeling L: E → {1, 2,.., q} is a bijection from the set of edges E to the set of natural numbers less than or equal to q. A graph is said to be I-magic if there exists an edge labeling such that the sum of all edge labels incident to each internal vertex has the same value, and this value is called the magic index t, while the labeling is called an I-magic labeling. It has been conjectured that all cubic trees are I-magic. In this paper, we …

What's Swimming In My Glass? The Debate Over The Southern Nevada Water Authority's Use Of The Return Flow Credit Policy, Patrick L Ferguson
What's Swimming In My Glass? The Debate Over The Southern Nevada Water Authority's Use Of The Return Flow Credit Policy, Patrick L Ferguson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Currently the Southern Nevada Water Authority uses an existing federal policy of return flow credits to divert water from Lake Mead above the annual allocation authorized by the Colorado River System Water Use Agreement. Credits obtained by the return of treated effluent allow water officials to divert as much Colorado River water as is needed to sustain current growth and development here in southern Nevada. Some in the community believe that this is a prudent use of a valuable resource; others that it is a means to justify the over-consumption of water and is altering the watershed in potentially harmful …

The Design And Performance Of An X-Ray Emission Spectrometer Using The Polarized Kalpha Spectra Of Chlorine And Potassium, Amanda C Hudson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The x-ray emission spectrometer was designed to observe the polarization of x-ray fluorescence resulting from the excitation of a sample by synchrotron radiation. The incident photons are intense, monoenergetic and linearly polarized along the plane of the storage-ring orbit. The emission spectrometer records the entire K-alpha spectrum by dispersing the emitted radiation with a curved Si (111) crystal and detecting the resulting radiation with a resistive anode position sensitive detector; both of which are situated on a Rowland circle. A sample is fixed in position and located in the middle of the Rowland circle. The spectrometer can be positioned to …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Polyaniline/Metal Composites, John Macharia Kinyanjui
Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Polyaniline/Metal Composites, John Macharia Kinyanjui
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The chemical synthesis of polyaniline (PANI) is explored using tetrachloroaurate, AuCl4- and hexachloroplatinate, PtCl 62-. These studies provide a simple method for the direct oxidation of aniline by these metal species and simultaneous formation of bulk quantities of PANI/Au and PANI/Pt composites, respectively. Studies of the PANI/Au composite indicate that the properties of the polymer are consistent with more traditional methods of preparation. The incorporation of metal into the polymer matrix shows an increase in conductance for the doped PANI/Au composite relative to PANI/HBF4 without Au particles. In the case of the PANI/Pt composite, the polymer is found to exist …

A Controlled Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Mental Skills Program For Ncaa And Youth Club Swimmers, Kevin Matthew Lancer
A Controlled Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Mental Skills Program For Ncaa And Youth Club Swimmers, Kevin Matthew Lancer
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Previous studies have established that mental skills training is an effective intervention for improving performance in athletes. Relaxation, imagery, and mental preparation interventions have demonstrated efficacy in the improvement of athletic performance. However, relaxation combined with imagery is more effective than either one alone. Similarly, past studies have indicated mental preparation interventions may be more effective in the improvement of athletic performance when combined with other interventions. In team sports such as swimming, optimum performance has been found to improve cohesion. However, whether cohesion leads to improvements in sports performance is undetermined. In this study, a multiple baseline across team …
Recognition And Identification Of Form Document Layouts, Kai Luo
Recognition And Identification Of Form Document Layouts, Kai Luo
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, a hierarchical tree representation is introduced to represent the logical structure of a form document. But different forms might have the same logical structure, so the representation will be ambiguous. In this thesis, an improvement is proposed to solve the ambiguity problem by using the physical information of the blocks. To fulfill the application of hierarchical tree representation and extract the physical information of blocks, a pixel tracing approach is used to extract form layout structures from form documents. Compared with Hough transform, the pixel tracing algorithm requires less computation. This algorithm has been tested on 50 …
"In That New World Which Is The Old": New World/Old World Inversion In Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World", Oliver Quimby Melton
"In That New World Which Is The Old": New World/Old World Inversion In Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World", Oliver Quimby Melton
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
"'In That New World Which Is The Old': New World/Old World Inversion In Aldous Huxley's Brave New World" examines the inversion of the concepts Old World, specifically associated with England, and New World, specifically associated with America, in the novel Brave New World. After examining and denotatively defining the terms Old World and New World, this thesis argues that the New World/Old World inversion in Huxley's dystopian novel exists because of Anglo-American cultural and political events of the 1920s and early 1930s, namely, the United States' rise as a military, political, and cultural superpower following World War I and Great …

Study Of Subthreshold Behavior Of Finfet, Balasubramanian Murugan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The study of subthreshold behavior of Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) is critically important in the case of submicron devices for the successful design and implementation of digital circuits. Fin Field Effect Transistor (FinFET) is considered to be an alternate MOSFET structure in the deep sub-micron regime. A 3D Poisson equation solver is employed to study the subthreshold behavior of FinFET. Based on potential distribution inside the fin, the appropriate band bending and the subthreshold value called the S-factor is calculated. It is observed that the S-factor of the device increases as the channel width, Tfin increases. This …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Polyurethane foam, used as a supporting or insulating material, is sometimes formed in complex molds with significant variations in geometry and size. This work investigates the relationships between cell morphology, density, and mechanical properties in a molded polyurethane material using relatively small cylindrical molds. Understanding these relationships will help mechanical designers analyze and predict the responses of foam components accurately; Three mold sizes are used to study changes in cell morphology (cell area, cell diameter, aspect ratio, cell angle, cell edge length, cell face thickness, and cell edge thickness), density, and mechanical properties (Young's modulus, peak yield, and collapse stress) …
A Graphical Approach For Goodness-Of-Fit Of Poisson Model, Davin P Padilla
A Graphical Approach For Goodness-Of-Fit Of Poisson Model, Davin P Padilla
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Extensive work has been done on goodness-of-fit (GOF) tests for data assumed to have come from univariate continuous distributions; however, literature on GOF procedures for univariate discrete distributions is rather sparse in compariSon The Poisson distribution in particular has received much attention in the study of GOF tests due to its numerous applications as a model for observable phenomena. Hence, we survey existing GOF tests for Poissonity and present a useful guide to the most commonly used distribution-free GOF tests in practice. We then propose and investigate a graphical test of fit for the Poisson model that is based on …
The Relationship Between Internal Service Components And Organizational Commitment In Fine-Dining Restaurants, Taryn M Perry
The Relationship Between Internal Service Components And Organizational Commitment In Fine-Dining Restaurants, Taryn M Perry
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Due to increased competition in the restaurant industry, employers need to offer more than monetary compensation to attract quality employees. Offering these non-economic benefits, or internal services, can aid in keeping employees satisfied and committed to their organizations. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between internal service components and organizational commitment. Data was collected from three fine-dining restaurants in Las Vegas, Nevada. The original hypotheses were not supported by the research results. Yet, the study did yield evidence indicating that satisfaction with some aspects of internal services was influential in predicting organization commitment. Implications for management …

Identification Of Headers And Footers In Noisy Documents, Qin Liu
Identification Of Headers And Footers In Noisy Documents, Qin Liu
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Optical Recognition Technology is typically used to convert hard copy printed material into its electronic form. Many presentational artifacts such as end-of-line hyphenations, running headers and footers are literally converted. These artifacts can possibly hinder proximity and exact match searching; This thesis develops an algorithm to extract running headers and footers from electronic documents generated by OCR. This method associates each page of the document with its neighboring pages and detects the headers and footers by comparing the page with its neighboring pages. Experiments are also taken to test the effectiveness of these algorithms.
