Complexity Theory And Al Qaeda: Examining Complex Leadership, Russ Marion, Mary Uhl-Bien
Complexity Theory And Al Qaeda: Examining Complex Leadership, Russ Marion, Mary Uhl-Bien
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Recent events in the world are forcing us to restructure our understanding of leadership and organization. The al- Qaeda organization and its pervasive presence in the world demonstrated first-hand the power of a flexible, moderately coupled network of individuals brought together by a common need and aligned behind an informal and emergent leader. Its structure, which resulted from bottom-up coordination of individuals who voluntarily came together based on common need rather than from top-down hierarchical control, clearly demonstrates the power of a networked system based on relationships and shared vision and mission. To understand this and other types of network …
Reciprocity In Manager-Subordinate Relationships: Components, Configurations, And Outcomes, Mary Uhl-Bien, John M. Maslyn
Reciprocity In Manager-Subordinate Relationships: Components, Configurations, And Outcomes, Mary Uhl-Bien, John M. Maslyn
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
The present study examines both positive and negative norms of reciprocity in managerial work relationships by assessing three components of reciprocal behavior: immediacy, equivalence, and interest motive. The findings show that subordinate reports of immediacy, equivalence, and self-interest were negatively associated, and mutual-interest was positively associated, with relationship quality as reported by both subordinates and managers (other-interest was not significant). These components of reciprocity were also subjected to cluster analysis to identify groupings of reciprocity styles. The results indicate styles reflecting high quality (n = 65), low quality (n = 120), and negative social exchanges (n = …
The Duality Of Race And Gender For Managerial African American Women: Implications Of Informal Social Networks On Career Advancement, Gwendolyn Combs
The Duality Of Race And Gender For Managerial African American Women: Implications Of Informal Social Networks On Career Advancement, Gwendolyn Combs
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Research suggests that women have progressed in equalizing their representation, status, and earning power as managers in organizations. These improvements may not reflect the career advancement of managerial African American women. African American women contend with the convergence of race and gender in improving their organizational standing and career advancement opportunities. The literature on workplace social networks indicates that informal more than formal socialization systems are salient in advancing careers. Due to the duality of race and gender, African American women in managerial and executive positions may be forced into out-group status in terms of informal social networks. Informal social …
The Probabilistic Economic Injury Level: Incorporating Uncertainty Into Pest Management Decision-Making, Robert K. D. Peterson, Thomas E. Hunt
The Probabilistic Economic Injury Level: Incorporating Uncertainty Into Pest Management Decision-Making, Robert K. D. Peterson, Thomas E. Hunt
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Despite the recognition that the economic injury level (EIL) is determined by dynamic biological and economic parameters, which can be highly variable and uncertain, there has been little effort to quantify uncertainty and to use estimates of uncertainty in the determination of EILs. In this paper, we define the probabilistic EIL (PEIL) and develop PEILs for two insect pest scenarios: alfalfa weevil larvae, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), on early bud-stage alfalfa, and bean leaf beetle adults, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster), on V1-stage soybean. The PEIL is an EIL that reflects its probability of occurrence. The probability of occurrence is determined by incorporating …

Assessment Of Grain Yield Losses In Pearl Millet Due To The Millet Stemborer, Coniesta Ignefusalis (Hampson), Aissetou Drame-Yaye, Ousmane Youm, Jonathan N. Ayertey
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Studies were conducted at the ICRISAT Sahelian Centre, Niger, to assess damage and yield loss by the millet stemborer, Coniesta ignefusalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) on Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Brown. Although 78% of stems were infested, late attack by the millet stemborer on millet plants resulted in bored stems yielding more than unbored ones. Artificial infestations with 5 and 10 larvae per plant at 2 weeks after plant emergence (WAE) resulted in 50 to 70% plants with deadhearts and 24 to 100% avoidable yield loss. At 4 weeks after plant emergence, infestations with 5 larvae and 10 larvae per plant resulted …
Agent Based Intrusion Detection And Response System For Wireless Lans, Mohan K Chirumamilla, Byrav Ramamurthy
Agent Based Intrusion Detection And Response System For Wireless Lans, Mohan K Chirumamilla, Byrav Ramamurthy
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Wireless LAN technology, despite the numerous advantages it has over competing technologies, has not seen widespread deployment. A primary reason for markets not adopting this technology is its failure to provide adequate security. Data that is sent over wireless links can be compromised with utmost ease. In this project, we propose a distributed agent based intrusion detection and response system for wireless LANs that can detect unauthorized wireless elements like access points, wireless clients that are in promiscuous mode etc. The system reacts to intrusions by either notifying the concerned personnel, in case of rogue access points and promiscuous nodes, …
A Literature Review On Learner Control Strategies In Software Tutoring Systems, Xin Li, Leen-Kiat Soh
A Literature Review On Learner Control Strategies In Software Tutoring Systems, Xin Li, Leen-Kiat Soh
School of Computing: Technical Reports
This paper is a comprehensive research review on the learner control strategies in software tutoring systems. With the application of more computer techniques in education and the involvement of more adults in software tutoring systems, the learner control strategy has become more appreciated than tutor control or program control. In this paper, the efficiency and necessity of learner control in software tutoring systems is discussed through the description of learning mechanism. Some typical applications of learner control strategies in software tutoring systems are presented. The available learner control strategies are classified from two perspectives: educational theory, and software mechanism. Finally, …
Inter-Domain Dynamic Routing In Multi-Layer Optical Transport Networks, Xi Yang, Byrav Ramamurthy
Inter-Domain Dynamic Routing In Multi-Layer Optical Transport Networks, Xi Yang, Byrav Ramamurthy
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Next-generation optical transport networks will automatically and dynamically provision end-to-end connections. In this paper, we study the problem of inter-domain dynamic routing under a multi-layer multi-domain network model, which allows the end-to-end connections to be set up not only across multiple routing domains but also through two transport layers: the optical layer and the digital layer. In this model, a connection can traverse the domain boundary either through optical bypass or through optical-electrical-optical (O/E/O) processing. We propose an inter-domain dynamic routing scheme with modest time complexity to address the problem from an algorithmic perspective.

Teaching A Multiagent Systems Class With Game Days: Designs And Lessons Learned, Leen-Kiat Soh
School of Computing: Technical Reports
In the Fall semester of 2002, I introduced and taught a class in Multiagent Systems. The class was aimed for seniors (with special permission) and graduate students in Computer Science, covering some breadth and depth of issues in multiagent systems. One of the requirements was participation in four Game Days. On each Game Day, student teams competed against each other in games related to issues such as auction, task allocation, coalition formation, and negotiation. This article documents my designs of and lessons learned from these Game Days. The Game Days were very successful. Through role-playing, the students were motivated and …
A Novel Fiber Delay Line Buffering Architecture For Optical Packet Switching, Lin Li, Stephen Scott, Jitender S. Deogun
A Novel Fiber Delay Line Buffering Architecture For Optical Packet Switching, Lin Li, Stephen Scott, Jitender S. Deogun
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Due to the lack of optical random access memory, optical fiber delay line (FDL) is currently the only way to implement optical buffering. Feed-forward and feedback are two kinds of FDL structures in optical buffering. Both have advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, we propose a more effective hybrid FDL architecture that combines the merits of both schemes. The core of this switch is the arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and the tunable wavelength converter (TWC). It requires smaller optical device sizes and fewer wavelengths and has less noise than feedback architecture. At the same time, it can facilitate preemptive priority …
Patterns And Trends Of Soil Climate Regimes And Drought Events In The Northern Great Plains, William J. Waltman, Stephen M. Goddard, S. E. Reichenbach, Mark Svoboda, Michael Hayes, J. S. Peake
Patterns And Trends Of Soil Climate Regimes And Drought Events In The Northern Great Plains, William J. Waltman, Stephen M. Goddard, S. E. Reichenbach, Mark Svoboda, Michael Hayes, J. S. Peake
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Drought is the dominant process of crop loss nationally and within Nebraska. Nearly twothirds of the 18.6 million harvested acres are covered by crop insurance (USDA/RMA, 2003; USDA/NASS, 2003). For the most part, Nebraska’s crop losses range from $50 to 75 million in non-drought years, but the losses approach nearly $200 million in drought years, such as 2000. The past growing season (2002) crop losses are projected to greatly exceed $375 million in Nebraska and more than $4 billion nationally (USDA/RMA, 2003). The analysis and understanding of drought processes in the Great Plains is an important component to developing drought …

A New Efficient Algorithm For Solving The Simple Temporal Problem, Lin Xu, Berthe Y. Choueiry
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
In this paper we propose a new efficient algorithm, the Δ STP-solver, for computing the minimal network of the Simple Temporal Problem (STP). This algorithm achieves high performance by exploiting a topological property of the constraint graph (i.e., triangulation) and a semantic property of the constraints (i.e., convexity) in light of the results reported by Bliek and Sam-Haroud [1], which were presented for general CSPs and have not yet been applied to temporal networks. Importantly, we design the constraint propagation in Δ STP-solver to operate on triangles instead of operating on edges and implicitly guarantee the decomposition of …
Long-Lived Pluvial Episodes During Deposition Of The Navajo Sandstone, David B. Loope, Clinton M. Rowe
Long-Lived Pluvial Episodes During Deposition Of The Navajo Sandstone, David B. Loope, Clinton M. Rowe
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The Navajo Sandstone of the American Southwest was deposited at approximately 190 Ma in a giant, subtropical dune field near the western margin of Pangea. From this unit, we report thick intervals of dune cross-strata that were churned by insects and trampled by reptiles. Although dunes continued to migrate freely, the distribution of trace fossils shows that plant life in wet interdune areas sustained high levels of animal activity on the dunes for many thousands of years. We interpret this suite of structures as the record of a pluvial episode climatologically similar to the period of “greening” in the Sahara …
Estimation Of Hydraulic Conductivity From Borehole Flowmeter Tests Considering Head Losses, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Brian R. Zurbuchen
Estimation Of Hydraulic Conductivity From Borehole Flowmeter Tests Considering Head Losses, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Brian R. Zurbuchen
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Recent numerical studies have demonstrated that the conventional interpretation of the borehole flowmeter test (BFT) may lead to considerable errors in estimates of the horizontal hydraulic conductivity (Kr) due to neglect of head loss across the electromagnetic borehole flowmeter (EBF). Even in uniform aquifers, the conventional interpretation underestimates Kr at the base and overestimates Kr at the top of the aquifer. In this paper, we derive exact analytical solutions for hydraulic head and streamlines induced by the BFT in a confined homogeneous aquifer. The solutions explicitly consider head loss across the EBF. The derived analytical solutions …
Sulfate Oxygen-17 Anomaly In An Oligocene Ash Bed In Mid-North America: Was It The Dry Fogs?, Huiming Bao, Mark H. Thiemens, David B. Loope, Xun-Lai Yuan
Sulfate Oxygen-17 Anomaly In An Oligocene Ash Bed In Mid-North America: Was It The Dry Fogs?, Huiming Bao, Mark H. Thiemens, David B. Loope, Xun-Lai Yuan
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The oxygen and sulfur isotope compositions of sulfate, particularly the oxygen-17 anomaly, provide clues to the origin of sulfate. We report a variable oxygen-17 anomaly for water- and acid-leached sulfate from an Oligocene volcanic ash bed in the northern High Plains, U.S.A. We find no sulfate O-17 anomaly, however, in freshly collected ashes from recent eruptions around the world. The Oligocene paleoclimatic and sedimentary evidence argues against a hyperarid condition in the High Plains, thus a long-term background atmospheric sulfate accumulation is less likely the origin. Combining sulfur isotope data, we suggest that the anomalous sulfate was associated with volcanic …
Intercontinental Migration Of Large Mammalian Carnivores: Earliest Occurrence Of The Old World Beardog Amphicyon (Carnivora, Amphicyonidae) In North America, Robert M. Hunt Jr.
Intercontinental Migration Of Large Mammalian Carnivores: Earliest Occurrence Of The Old World Beardog Amphicyon (Carnivora, Amphicyonidae) In North America, Robert M. Hunt Jr.
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
North American amphicyonid carnivorans are prominent members of the mid-Cenozoic terrestrial carnivore community during the late Eocene to late Miocene (Duchesnean to Clarendonian). Species range in size from <5 kg to >200 kg. Among the largest amphicyonids are Old and New World species of the genus Amphicyon: A. giganteus in Europe (18–~15? Ma) and Africa, A. ingens in North America (15.9–~14.2 Ma). Amphicyon first appears in the Oligocene of western Europe, surviving there until the late Miocene. Migration to Africa and North America takes place in the early Miocene. The genus occurs in the Arrisdrift fauna (Namibia) of southwest Africa, indicating migration south …5>
A Daily Soil Temperature Dataset And Soil Temperature Climatology Of The Contiguous United States, Q. Steven Hu, Yongjun Zheng
A Daily Soil Temperature Dataset And Soil Temperature Climatology Of The Contiguous United States, Q. Steven Hu, Yongjun Zheng
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Although affected by atmospheric circulations, variations in soil temperature result primarily from the radiation and sensible and latent heat exchanges at the surface and heat transfer in the soils of different thermal properties. Thus, soil temperature and its variation at various depths are unique parameters that are useful in understanding both the surface energy processes and regional environmental and climatic conditions. Yet, despite the importance, long-term quality data of soil temperatures are not available for the United States. The goal of this study is to fill this data gap and to develop a soil temperature dataset from the historical data …

Optimization Model Estimates Of Trunk Muscle Forces Do Not Correlate With Emg Activity Of Females As Well As Males, Mark L. Mcmulkin, Jeffrey C. Woldstad, Richard E. Hughes
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Biomechanical optimization models are often used to estimate muscular and intervertebral disc forces during physical exertions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an optimization-based biomechanical model predicts torso muscular activity of males and females equally well. The Minimum Intensity Compression (MIC) model, which has been extensively applied in industrial ergonomic task analysis, was used to estimate muscle forces for 3D moments. Participants (6 M, 6 F) performed 18 isometric exertions resisting 3D L3/L4 moments while electomyographic( EMG) activity was recorded for 8 muscles. Overall, model force estimates correlated better with male EMG activity (R2 = …
A Shape-Based Approach To Change Detection Of Lakes Using Time Series Remote Sensing Images, Jiang Li, Ram M. Narayanan
A Shape-Based Approach To Change Detection Of Lakes Using Time Series Remote Sensing Images, Jiang Li, Ram M. Narayanan
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Shape analysis has not been considered in remote sensing as extensively as in other pattern recognition applications. However, shapes such as those of geometric patterns in agriculture and irregular boundaries of lakes can be extracted from the remotely sensed imagery even at relatively coarse spatial resolutions. This paper presents a procedure for efficiently retrieving and representing shapes of interesting features in remotely sensed imagery using supervised classification, object recognition, parametric contour tracing, and proposed piecewise linear polygonal approximation techniques. In addition, shape similarity can be measured by means of a computationally efficient metric. The study was conducted on a time …

Antenna Selection Scheme For Wireless Channels Utilizing Differential Space-Time Modulation, Le Chung Tran, Tadeusz A. Wysocki
Antenna Selection Scheme For Wireless Channels Utilizing Differential Space-Time Modulation, Le Chung Tran, Tadeusz A. Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
In this paper, the authors prove that the differential space-time modulation techniques proposed in literature provide a full spatial diversity. Based on that, the authors propose an antenna selection scheme called general N-out-of-M antenna selection technique for wireless communications channels utilizing differential space-time modulation. The simulation shows that differential detection associated with our proposed technique provides much better bit error performance over that without antenna selection, and even over coherent detection without antenna selection at certain signal-to-noise ratios.
Displacement Based Route Update Strategies For Proactive Routing Protocols In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Mehran Abolhasan, Tadeusz Wysocki
Displacement Based Route Update Strategies For Proactive Routing Protocols In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Mehran Abolhasan, Tadeusz Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
This paper presents a new route update strategy for performing proactive route discovery in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs). In this strategy, the rate at which route updates are sent into the network is controlled by how often a node changes its location by a required distance. We refer to this updating strategy as Minimum Displacement Update Routing (MDUR). We implemented MDUR on top of the Fisheye State Routing (FSR) protocol and investigated its performance by simulation. The simulations where performed in a number of different scenarios, with varied network mobility, density, traffic and boundary. Our results indicate that MDUR …

Convolutional Interleaver For Unequal Error Protection Of Turbo Codes, Sina Vafi, Tadeusz A. Wysocki, Ian Burnett
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
This paper describes construction of a convolutional interleaver as a block interleaver and discusses its application to turbo codes with equal and unequal error protection techniques. Based on simulations, different convolutional interleaver structures suitable for turbo codes with unequal error protection capability are suggested. Finally, based on conducted simulations the best method is selected.
Review Of The Dead Sea Scrolls, Fifty Years After Their Discovery: Proceedings Of The Jerusalem Congress, July 20–25, 1997, Edited By Lawrence H. Schiffman, Emanuel Tov, And James C. Vanderkam; Executive Editor Galen Marquis, Sidnie White Crawford
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
Occasionally a volume appears that is almost impossible to review, whether because the material it presents is completely new, the subject matter is so esoteric, or the material is so eclectic that it cannot be absorbed in a single review. The latter is the case with the present volume, which contains over 100 articles by scholars from the United States, Israel, Canada, and Europe. The subject matter is the finds from the Judaean Desert—not only the written remains but also the material, biological, and architectural remains as well. The written remains include the Qumran scrolls (popularly referred to as the …

The Dead Sea Scrolls: Retrospective And Prospective, Sidnie White Crawford
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
The Dead Sea Scrolls—in the popular imagination, the very name conjures up scandal, intrigue and mystery. Tales of illicit excavations, clandestine purchases, and midnight trips to Beirut, all with the sound of gunfire crackling in the background, abound in the lore of the Scrolls and the scholars associated with them. While visions of Roland de Vaux as a French Indiana Jones may be the product of an overheated imagination, the actual story of the discovery of the Scrolls is nevertheless an exciting one in the annals of archaeology.
To say that the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls has revolutionized …
