Now, you would think that I was as old as dirt after listening to that introduction. Well, the truth is, I am as old as dirt. And I told Paul Quander that we are both as old as dirt.

First, I want to thank Arlene for inviting me. Many, many months ago Arlene called and asked me if I would speak at this symposium on mental health in correctional institutions.

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

OBJECTIVE: To examine in-depth the lives of women whose partners attempted to kill them, and to identify patterns that may aid in the clinician’s ability to predict, prevent, or counsel about femicide or attempted femicide. DESIGN: Qualitative analysis of 30 in-depth interviews. SETTING: Six U.S. cities. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty women, aged 17–54 years, who survived an attempted homicide by an intimate partner. RESULTS: All but 2 of the participants had previously experienced physical violence, controlling behavior, or both from the partner who attempted to kill them. The intensity of the violence, control, and threats varied greatly, as did the number of …

The Poverty Of Language In Education : A Social Class Perspective On An Unequal Institution, Julio J. Cardona Jan 2003

The Poverty Of Language In Education : A Social Class Perspective On An Unequal Institution, Julio J. Cardona

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

What is the poverty of language? In researching this topic, many researchers who study linguistics and sociolinguistics have reported that language acquisition is affected by social class. Researchers have reported that the lower and working class struggle more frequently in the attainment of Standard or "Cash" English when compared to upper or middle-class students. After reviewing several sources, I find that problems with the "poverty of language in education" include low requirements for cognitive skills in the workplace, lack of reading and writing skills attained by the working class, and the minimal funding of education in working class neighborhoods. Many …

The Ethics Of Sport : Moral Guidelines For Effective Coaching, Jennifer Lynne Whitemore

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The coaching profession can be extremely rewarding but can have its share of complications as well. The ethical dilemmas that coaches face are often very difficult to manage because of their intricate nature. My project discusses several dilemmas and offers ethical and effective means for coaches to work through them.

Exploring The Importance Of Incorporating The Visual And Creative Arts Into Elementary School Curriculum, Emily Mcdaniel Jan 2003

Exploring The Importance Of Incorporating The Visual And Creative Arts Into Elementary School Curriculum, Emily Mcdaniel

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The target audience that my capstone report has been written for consists of elementary administrators and elementary instructors that do not already see the importance of arts integration in curriculum, and, hence, do little to employ the arts in their classrooms beyond a few finger paintings and holiday decorations. The primary intention of my report is to convey to elementary administrators and elementary instructors the importance of incorporating the visual and creative arts into elementary curriculum. The secondary intention of my capstone report is to illustrate that arts integration can be done easily, provided that the instructor is willing to …

Dismantling The Master's House : Using Whose Tools? : A Critical Analysis Of The Experiences Of University Service Advocates At The Service Learning Institute Of California State University, Monterey Bay, Judith Flores

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This participatory action thesis critically analyzes the experiences of the University Service Advocates at the Service Learning Institute of California State University, Monterey Bay. Data were gathered from two focus groups, one formed by seven women and the other composed of four men. The data were analyzed using grounded theory methodology and applied to two theoretical frameworks: Critical Race Theory and Cultural Citizenship. The findings demonstrated an urgent need to rethink the pedagogical approaches in the social justice curriculum co-taught by marginalized instructors or peer facilitators. A module was created as a teaching tool to incorporate reciprocal learning through storytelling, …

Civil Society And Democratization In Asia: Prospects And Challenges In The New Millennium, Emma E. Porio Jan 2003

Civil Society And Democratization In Asia: Prospects And Challenges In The New Millennium, Emma E. Porio

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

This paper examines the conceptual foundations of civil society and its role in shaping socio-political life in the past decade as well as their prospects and challenges for the next millennium. It argues that civil society is a key mediating force in changing the state- society dynamics, which in turn, is also being reconfigured by the globalization of social life and the rise of identity and resource claims from various groups. Furthermore, state- civil society engagements have been influenced by communication technologies, facilitating the efficient movement of information, capital, and human resources across groups and national boundaries. Finally, the growth …

Optimal Entanglement Generation From Quantum Operations, Matthew S. Leifer, L. Henderson, N. Linden Jan 2003

Optimal Entanglement Generation From Quantum Operations, Matthew S. Leifer, L. Henderson, N. Linden

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We consider how much entanglement can be produced by a nonlocal two-qubit unitary operation, UAB—the entangling capacity of UAB. For a single application of UAB , with no ancillas, we find the entangling capacity and show that it generally helps to act with UAB on an entangled state. Allowing ancillas, we present numerical results from which we can conclude, quite generally, that allowing initial entanglement typically increases the optimal capacity in this case as well. Next, we show that allowing collective processing does not increase the entangling capacity if initial entanglement is allowed.

The Subclassing Anomaly In Compiler Evolution, Atanas Radenski Jan 2003

The Subclassing Anomaly In Compiler Evolution, Atanas Radenski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Subclassing in collections of related classes may require re-implementation of otherwise valid classes just because they utilize outdated parent classes, a phenomenon that is referred to as the subclassing anomaly. The subclassing anomaly is a serious problem since it can void the benefits of code reuse altogether. This paper offers an analysis of the subclassing anomaly in an evolving object-oriented compiler. The paper also outlines a solution for the subclassing anomaly that is based on alternative code reuse mechanism, named class overriding.

Notes On Interpolation In The Generalized Schur Class. Ii. Nudelman's Problem, Daniel Alpay, T. Constantinescu, A. Dijksma, J. Rovnyak, A. Dijksma Jan 2003

Notes On Interpolation In The Generalized Schur Class. Ii. Nudelman's Problem, Daniel Alpay, T. Constantinescu, A. Dijksma, J. Rovnyak, A. Dijksma

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

An indefinite generalization of Nudel′man’s problem is used in a systematic approach to interpolation theorems for generalized Schur and Nevanlinna functions with interior and boundary data. Besides results on existence criteria for Pick-Nevanlinna and Carath´eodory-Fej´er interpolation, the method yields new results on generalized interpolation in the sense of Sarason and boundary interpolation, including properties of the finite Hilbert transform relative to weights. The main theorem appeals to the Ball and Helton almost-commutant lifting theorem to provide criteria for the existence of a solution to Nudel′man’s problem.
