Web Orientation Of The Banded Garden Spider Argiope Trifasciata (Araneae, Araneidae) In A California Coastal Population, Martina G. Ramirez Jan 2003

Web Orientation Of The Banded Garden Spider Argiope Trifasciata (Araneae, Araneidae) In A California Coastal Population, Martina G. Ramirez

Biology Faculty Works

Magnetic heading (direction the spider’s ventrum faced) and web inclination (degree of slant from the vertical) in Argiope trifasciata Forska°l, a diurnal orb-weaving spider, were studied at a coastal site in southern California for nine weeks in fall 1999. Throughout the study, A. trifasciata largely occupied east-west oriented webs with their venters facing south and southwest. Mean magnetic heading was unaffected by ambient temperature extremes. Inclination levels varied from week to week over an approximately 58 range. However, these changes followed no discernible pattern and were independent both of the sun’s decrease in maximum altitude during the course of the …

Proteasome Inhibition Stabilizes Tau Inclusions In Oligodendroglial Cells That Occur After Treatment With Okadaic Acid, Deepa V. Dabir Jan 2003

Proteasome Inhibition Stabilizes Tau Inclusions In Oligodendroglial Cells That Occur After Treatment With Okadaic Acid, Deepa V. Dabir

Biology Faculty Works

Tau-positive inclusions in oligodendrocytes are consistent neuropathological features of corticobasal degeneration, progressive supranuclear palsy, and frontotemporal dementias with Parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17. Here we show by immunohistochemistry that tau-positive oligodendroglial inclusion bodies also contain the small heat-shock protein (HSP) αB-crystallin but not H HSP70. To study the molecular mechanisms underlying inclusion body formation, we engineered an oligodendroglia cell line (OLN-t40) to overexpress the longest human tau isoform. Treatment of OLN-t40 cells with okadaic acid (OA), an inhibitor of protein phosphatase 2A, caused tau hyperphosphorylation and a decrease in the binding of tau to microtubules. Simultaneously, tau-positive aggregates that also …

Evaluation Of Nitrate Nitrogen Fluxes From A Tile-Drained Watershed In Central Iowa, M. D. Tomer, D. W. Meek, D. B. Jaynes, J. L. Hatfield Jan 2003

Evaluation Of Nitrate Nitrogen Fluxes From A Tile-Drained Watershed In Central Iowa, M. D. Tomer, D. W. Meek, D. B. Jaynes, J. L. Hatfield

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Nitrate Nfluxes fromtile-drained watersheds have been implicated in water quality studies of the Mississippi River basin, but actual NO3–N loads from small watersheds during long periods are poorly documented. We evaluated discharge and NO3–N fluxes passing the outlet of an Iowa watershed (5134 ha) and two of its tile-drained subbasins (493 and 863 ha) from mid-1992 through 2000. The cumulative NO3–N load from the catchment was 168 kg ha-1, and 176 and 229 kg ha-1 from the subbasins. The outlet had greater total discharge (1831 mm) and smaller flow-weighted mean NO …

Biochemistry Of Ensiling, John A. Rooke, Ronald D. Hatfield Jan 2003

Biochemistry Of Ensiling, John A. Rooke, Ronald D. Hatfield

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The biochemistry of ensiling is essentially a simple process, which, however, can become complex when interactions among plant enzymes and the activities of numerous microbial species become involved. The desired effect is the conversion of simple plant sugars such as glucose and fructose to lactic acid by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in an anaerobic fermentation. When sufficient lactic acid has been produced, all microbial activity is suppressed, primarily through the effect of undissociated lactic acid, and the silage can then be stored anaerobically until required for feeding. Complications arise because:

1. There are always aerobic periods at the start and …

Irrigation Technology Transitions In The Mid-Plains States: Implications For Water Conservation/Water Quality Goals And Institutional Changes, Glenn D. Schaible, Marcel P. Aillery Jan 2003

Irrigation Technology Transitions In The Mid-Plains States: Implications For Water Conservation/Water Quality Goals And Institutional Changes, Glenn D. Schaible, Marcel P. Aillery

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A Parks modified multinomial logit model is used to examine the influence of the agricultural economic environment on irrigation technology transitions in the mid-plains states. Simulation analyses assess expected agricultural water conservation and its implications for water quality/environmental goals and water institutional reform. Under baseline agri-economic assumptions, regional agricultural water use efficiency could improve from 2.3% to 9.8%. Technology-specific elasticities show that crop price effects on irrigation technology transitions are relatively inelastic. Results for the mid-plains states differ from those obtained for the Pacific north-west (an earlier study), implying that differentially endowed resource regions will likely require different resource conservation …

Time-Mortality Relationships For Tribolium Castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) Life Stages Exposed To Elevated Temperatures, Rizana Mahroof, Bhadriraju Subramanyam, James E. Throne, Anil Menon Jan 2003

Time-Mortality Relationships For Tribolium Castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) Life Stages Exposed To Elevated Temperatures, Rizana Mahroof, Bhadriraju Subramanyam, James E. Throne, Anil Menon

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The use of elevated temperatures (≥40-60°C) or heat treatments for managing insects in food-processing facilities is a viable alternative to space fumigation with methyl bromide. Quantitative data are lacking on the responses of life stages of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), an important pest of food-processing facilities worldwide, to elevated temperatures used during heat treatments. We determined time-mortality relationships for eggs, young (neonate) larvae, old larvae, pupae, and adults of T. castaneum, exposed to constant temperatures of 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, and 60°C. Generally, mortality of each stage increased with an increase in temperature and exposure …

The Admissibility Of Expert Testimony In Washington On Post Traumatic Stress Disorder And Related Trauma Syndromes: Avoiding The Battle Of The Experts By Restoring The Use Of Objective Psychological Testimony In The Courtroom, Dr. Brett C. Trowbridge

Seattle University Law Review

This Article focuses on three types of syndrome evidence-rape trauma syndrome, child abuse syndromes, and battered person syndrome-all of which seem to be closely related to the diagnosis of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Part II provides background regarding the Frye test, explains how mental disorders are defined in the manual clinicians use, DSM-IV-TR, and outlines PTSD and associated syndromes. Parts III, IV, V, and VI address both legal and psychological concerns regarding specific syndromes and identify what types of testimony Washington law allows in each of these three areas. Part VII discusses the concerns regarding the scientific validity of …
