Individual Professional Development Plans: In Search Of Learning For Teaching, C. Richele O'Connor, Janet Herrelko Jan 2003

Individual Professional Development Plans: In Search Of Learning For Teaching, C. Richele O'Connor, Janet Herrelko

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This study is the continuation of a 1999 qualitative study in which the researchers examined the implementation of Local Professional Development Committees in the state of Ohio. This descriptive study examined the Individual Professional Development Plans (IPDP) of 133 teachers. Resultant data indicated that, from the wide array of possible selections for professional development (PD) including many that did not have any associated cost, thirteen different types of activities were chosen. The majority of teachers selected the traditional means of earning PD credit: university course work, inservice workshops, and conferences. The research revealed teacher confusion with this new form of …

Priming The Pump: Nurturing Teacher-Researchers Through Collaboration, James A. Salzman, Donna Snodgrass

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This article reports on the delayed impact of a year-long, collaborative action research seminar on the professional development of a cohort group of teachers. The authors describe the design of the seminar and the guiding principles of the collaborative process. The teacher-researchers reported that, as a result of the seminar and their investigations, they are more competent consumers and producers of research. The effects for individuals ranged from subtle impacts on the ways that they conceived of their professional practices to continuing efforts to produce and disseminate research findings.

Trade And The (Dis) Incentive To Reform Labor Markets: The Case Of Reform In The European Union, George Alessandria, Alain Delacroix Jan 2003

Trade And The (Dis) Incentive To Reform Labor Markets: The Case Of Reform In The European Union, George Alessandria, Alain Delacroix

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

In a closed economy general equilibrium model, Hopenhayn and Rogerson (1993) find large welfare gains to removing firing restrictions. We explore the extent to which international trade alters this result. When economies trade, labor market policies in one country spill over to other countries through a change in the terms of trade. This reduces the incentive to reform labor markets. In a policy game over firing taxes between countries, we find that countries optimally choose positive levels of firing taxes. A coordinated elimination of firing taxes yields considerable benefits. This insight provides some explanation for recent efforts toward labor market …

Wealth Creation For Acquirers Of Listed And Unlisted Targets, Mara Faccio, John J. Mcconnell, David Stolin Jan 2003

Wealth Creation For Acquirers Of Listed And Unlisted Targets, Mara Faccio, John J. Mcconnell, David Stolin

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We examine announcement period excess returns to acquirers of listed and unlisted targets in 17 Western European countries over the interval 1996 through 2001. Acquirers of listed targets earn an insignificant average excess return of –0.38%, while acquirers of unlisted targets earn a significant average excess return of +1.48%. This “listing effect” in acquirers’ returns persists through time and across countries and remains after controlling for method of payment for the target, the acquirer’s size and Tobin’s Q, the “liquidity” of the target, whether the acquisition created a blockholder in the acquirer’s ownership structure, whether the acquisition was a crossborder …

One Minute In The Life Of The Dm/Us$: Public News In An Electronic Market, John A. Carlson, Melody Lo Jan 2003

One Minute In The Life Of The Dm/Us$: Public News In An Electronic Market, John A. Carlson, Melody Lo

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Public news can be expected to change market prices but, unlike “public information,” there are differing expectations about the full impact and hence trading is necessary for the market to process these divergent views. A good illustration of this is a surprise announcement of an increase in German interest rates coupled with remarkably detailed concurrent transactions data from an electronic market. After initial trades hollowed out the market, a large volume of seller-initiated trades removed most of the existing demand, without many of the prior bids being withdrawn. While this is contrary to a rational expectations view of public information, …

Outside Directors And Corporate Board Decisions, Jay Dahya, John J. Mcconnell Jan 2003

Outside Directors And Corporate Board Decisions, Jay Dahya, John J. Mcconnell

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Between 1993 and 2000 at least 18 countries saw publication of guidelines that propose minimum representation of outside directors on corporate boards. The apparent premise underlying this movement is that boards with significant outside directors will make different and, perhaps, better decisions than boards dominated by inside directors. As the first-mover in this movement, the U.K. provides a laboratory for a “natural experiment” to examine this presumption empirically. We investigate one important board task - - the appointment of the CEO - - to determine whether boards are more likely to appoint an outside CEO after they have increased the …

Board Composition, Corporate Performance, And The Cadbury Committee Recommendation, Jay Dahya, John J. Mcconnell Jan 2003

Board Composition, Corporate Performance, And The Cadbury Committee Recommendation, Jay Dahya, John J. Mcconnell

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

During the 1990s and beyond, countries around the world have witnessed calls and/or mandates for more outside directors on publicly-traded companies’ boards even though extant studies find no significant correlation between outside directors and corporate performance. We examine the connection between changes in board composition and corporate performance in the UK over the interval 1989–1996, a period that surrounds publication of the Cadbury Report calling for at least three outside directors for publicly-traded corporations. We find that companies that added directors to conform with this standard exhibited a significant improvement in operating performance both in absolute terms and relative to …

The State Of Practice In Supply-Chain Management: A Research Perspective, Leroy B. Schwarz Jan 2003

The State Of Practice In Supply-Chain Management: A Research Perspective, Leroy B. Schwarz

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

In this paper, 1 will describe examples of state-of-the-art practice in supply-chain management; e.g., vendor-managed inventory, quick response, and other contemporary systems, such as Wal-Mart's RetailLink. The perspective will be that of what I call the JDJB Portfolio; i.e., what Information (I), Decision-Making {D), Implementation (I), and Buffer (B) systems are employed in managing real-world supply chains. Most operations-research models consider only two components of this portfolio: the decision-making and the buffer systems. More specifically, most operations-research models involve selecting a decision-rule to minimize expected buffer (e.g., inventory-holding and backorder) cost given a fixed level of information. Implementation as a …

A Fixed-Grid Front-Tracking Algorithm For Solidification Problems. Part I - Method And Validation, C. Y. Li, S V. Garimella, J E. Simpson Jan 2003

A Fixed-Grid Front-Tracking Algorithm For Solidification Problems. Part I - Method And Validation, C. Y. Li, S V. Garimella, J E. Simpson

CTRC Research Publications

A numerical study of directional solidification has been performed using a fixed-grid front- tracking algorithm. The directional solidification of pure tin, as well as the horizontal Bridgman growth of pure succinonitrile, were investigated. In both cases, the growth front was stable and nondendritic, but was significantly distorted by the influence of convection in the melt and, for the Bridgman growth case, by the translation of temperatures at the boundaries which represents furnace movement. Results obtained for the directional soli- dification of pure tin were found to agree reasonably well with experimental and numerical data for temperatures and front locations obtained …

The Use And Productivity Of Verb Morphology In Specific Language Impairment: An Examination Of Swedish, Kristina Hansson, Laurence B. Leonard Jan 2003

The Use And Productivity Of Verb Morphology In Specific Language Impairment: An Examination Of Swedish, Kristina Hansson, Laurence B. Leonard

Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications

In an earlier study, we found that Swedish-speaking children with specificlanguage impairment (SLI) differ from younger normally developing com-patriots on only a subset of verb morphemes characteristically problematicfor children with this type of disorder. In the present study, this finding wasreplicated, using a carefully devised set of tasks to elicit attempts at thetarget morphemes. The children with SLI used present copula forms andregular past-tense inflections with lower percentages than both younger andsame-age control children. However, the children with SLI were as proficientas the younger controls in the use of present-tense inflections and irregularpast forms. Given the pattern of the children’s …

The Role Of Cultural Distance In International Negotiations, Paul Drnevich Jan 2003

The Role Of Cultural Distance In International Negotiations, Paul Drnevich

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper attempts to examine the issues surrounding the role of national culture bias and the concept of distance among Hofstede's (1980) cultural dimensions on the ability to reach integrative agreements in international business arrangements between firms. Relational models of negotiating and the role of culture are presented as well as several managerial implications and propositions for future research.

Expatriate Assignments: Understanding The Skill, Ability, Personality, And Behavioral Requirements Of Working Abroad, Shung J. Shin, Frederick P. Morgeson, Michael A. Campion Jan 2003

Expatriate Assignments: Understanding The Skill, Ability, Personality, And Behavioral Requirements Of Working Abroad, Shung J. Shin, Frederick P. Morgeson, Michael A. Campion

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

It is often assumed that adjustment to the local working environment is essential for expatriate assignments. As such, it is surprising there is little empirical research identifying how skill, ability, and personality requirements might differ between expatriate and domestic jobs and how cultural values are related to expatriate behaviors. In a large sample of professionals (N = 1,312) working in comparable jobs in 156 different countries, we found higher social and perceptual skill requirements in expatriate jobs. In two sub-samples (n = 420 and 468), we found that expatriate jobs also have higher reasoning ability and adjustment and achievement orientation …

The fragment yields from the multifragmentation of gold, lanthanum, and krypton nuclei obtained by the EOS Collaboration are examined in terms of Fisher's droplet formalism modified to account for Coulomb energy. The critical exponents sigma and tau and the surface energy coefficient c(0) are obtained. Estimates are made of the pressure-temperature and temperature-density coexistence curve of finite neutral nuclear matter as well as the location of the critical point.
