Locating Moving Objects Over Mobile Sensor Network, Arvind Nath Rapaka, Sandeep Bogollu, Donald C. Wunsch, Ravindra Nath Jan 2003

Locating Moving Objects Over Mobile Sensor Network, Arvind Nath Rapaka, Sandeep Bogollu, Donald C. Wunsch, Ravindra Nath

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The purpose of our on going research would be to track entities, which enter their field of vision over the sensor network. Based on their sightings, they maintain a dynamic cache that can be queried by a base station- a stationary orfixed node. Since transmitting messages consumes a lot of energy, as against local processing and moreover the limited energy in sensor node does not allow heavy duty computing, we need to develop algorithms that will ensure efficient computing and minimal transmission without degradation of performance. and also data is stored locally, and memory is finite, the nodes must choose …

Multilevel Inverter-Based Dual-Frequency Power Supply, B. Diong, Keith Corzine, S. Basireddy, Shuai Lu Jan 2003

Multilevel Inverter-Based Dual-Frequency Power Supply, B. Diong, Keith Corzine, S. Basireddy, Shuai Lu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most existing power supplies for induction heating equipment produce voltage at a single (adjustable) frequency. Recently, however, induction heating power supplies that produce voltage at two (adjustable) frequencies simultaneously have been introduced and commercialized. These represent a significant development particularly for heat-treating workpieces with uneven geometries, such as gears. Still, the existing approaches to dual-frequency voltage generation could be improved upon to achieve better control, higher efficiency, and reduced electromagnetic interference. This letter proposes the use of multilevel inverters for providing power at two frequencies simultaneously. It describes how the stepping angles for the desired output from such inverters can …

A Statistical Simulation Model For Mobile Radio Fading Channels, Chengshan Xiao, Y. Rosa Zheng Jan 2003

A Statistical Simulation Model For Mobile Radio Fading Channels, Chengshan Xiao, Y. Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, a Clarke's model-based simulator was proposed for Rayleigh fading channels. However, that model, as shown in this paper, may encounter statistic deficiency. Therefore, an improved model is presented to remove the statistic deficiency. Furthermore, a new simulation model is proposed for Rician fading channels. This Rician fading simulator with finite number of sinusoids plus a zero-mean stochastic sinusoid as the specular (line-of-sight) component is different from all the existing Rician fading simulators, which have non-zero mean deterministic specular component. The statistical properties of the proposed Rayleigh and Rician fading channel models are analyzed in detail, which shows that these …

A Study Of The Probe Induced Disturbances On The Near-Field Measurement, Jin Shi, Richard E. Dubroff, Kevin P. Slattery, Masahiro Yamaguchi, K.-I. Arai Jan 2003

A Study Of The Probe Induced Disturbances On The Near-Field Measurement, Jin Shi, Richard E. Dubroff, Kevin P. Slattery, Masahiro Yamaguchi, K.-I. Arai

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Numerical simulations were used to investigate the disturbance introduced by placing a small magnetic loop probe in the near field of a driven loop. In the absence of the loop probe, the numerical simulations were compared with an approximate closed-form analytical expression for the magnetic field produced by the driven loop. The agreement between the approximate analytical results and the simulation was good. The next set of simulations was based on a physical model that included the probe and showed that the probe does exert an effect on the field being measured. Examples of these simulations and their implications on …

Adaptive Critic Design Based Neurocontroller For A Statcom Connected To A Power System, Salman Mohagheghi, Jung-Wook Park, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel nonlinear optimal neurocontroller for a static compensator (STATCOM) connected to a power system using artificial neural networks is presented in this paper. The heuristic dynamic programming (HDP), a member of the adaptive critic designs (ACDs) family, is used for the design of the STATCOM neurocontroller. This neurocontroller provides nonlinear optimal control with better performance compared to the conventional PI controllers.

Combining Evolving Neural Network Classifiers Using Bagging, Sunghwan Sohn, Cihan H. Dagli Jan 2003

Combining Evolving Neural Network Classifiers Using Bagging, Sunghwan Sohn, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The performance of the neural network classifier significantly depends on its architecture and generalization. It is usual to find the proper architecture by trial and error. This is time consuming and may not always find the optimal network. For this reason, we apply genetic algorithms to the automatic generation of neural networks. Many researchers have provided that combining multiple classifiers improves generalization. One of the most effective combining methods is bagging. In bagging, training sets are selected by resampling from the original training set and classifiers trained with these sets are combined by voting. We implement the bagging technique into …

Capacitor Voltage Balancing In Full Binary Combination Schema Flying Capacitor Multilevel Inverters, Keith Corzine, X. Kou Jan 2003

Capacitor Voltage Balancing In Full Binary Combination Schema Flying Capacitor Multilevel Inverters, Keith Corzine, X. Kou

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, the full binary combination schema (FBCS) method has been introduced to control the flying capacitor multilevel inverter. This method has the primary advantage that the number of voltage levels can be increased for a given number of semiconductor devices when compared to the conventional control methods. However, due to the difficulty of balancing the capacitors, the new schema requires fixed floating sources to provide the DC voltages. This paper reveals an approach of balancing the capacitors, thus expanding the application fields of FBCS inverters to the family of the flying capacitor multilevel inverters under the condition of choosing a …

Formulating Fantasies: Marriage In Victorian England And George Eliot's Middlemarch, Liza Welch Barnes Jan 2003

Formulating Fantasies: Marriage In Victorian England And George Eliot's Middlemarch, Liza Welch Barnes

Theses and Dissertations

One of the oldest states of existence known to humanity, marriage is a traditional state of being, uniting one man and one woman to love, honor, cherish, and protect each other for the rest of their lives. In Victorian England, however, many men and women questioned traditional expectations concerning marriage. Society's norms in Britain dictated that marriage was the ultimate goal in the nineteenth century, and, according to Barbara Weiss, "there has perhaps never been an age (or a literature) as relentlessly pro marriage as the Victorian period" (67).

However, many issues concerning marriage disturbed some freer-thinking Victorians, including novelist …

The Reversibility Of Differential Rearing In Rats, Leann M. Taylor Jan 2003

The Reversibility Of Differential Rearing In Rats, Leann M. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Two groups of rats were raised in two different environments for 75 days beginning at 25 days of age. One group was raised in an enriched condition (EC), and one group in an impoverished condition (IC). At 91 days of age, all rats were tested on a spatial reversal learning task to determine if their early environments had affected their learning ability (Test 1). After Test 1 was completed, the rats were then placed in the opposite environment for another 75 days, with a second testing (Test 2) beginning at 165 days of age to determine if the new environment …

Involving Engineering With In-Service K-4 Teachers, Theresa M. Swift, Steve Eugene Watkins, Kristine Swenson, Evalee Lasater, Robert Mitchell Jan 2003

Involving Engineering With In-Service K-4 Teachers, Theresa M. Swift, Steve Eugene Watkins, Kristine Swenson, Evalee Lasater, Robert Mitchell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A strong workforce in science and engineering and literate citizens in a technology-based society depends on an educational system that prepares students in science, mathematics, and engineering. Unfortunately, many K-12 students lose interest in such topics early in their school years. Engineering applications can capture the imagination of students and illustrate the concepts in science and mathematics. Level-appropriate resources are as necessary for primary teachers and our young scholars as for teachers and students in higher grades. A model for interaction between engineers and K-4 teachers is proposed. The State of Missouri defines curriculum standards in each subject area and …

Supporting Patriarchy And Consumerism Through Sex Rhetoric: Power, Foucault And Sex And The City, Alyson Chace Arnold Jan 2003

Supporting Patriarchy And Consumerism Through Sex Rhetoric: Power, Foucault And Sex And The City, Alyson Chace Arnold

Open Access Master's Theses

As Americans seek identification through the media, Foucault's "bio-power" extends the power of patriarchy and consumerism through gender prescriptions. A study of modern sexuality discourses can show what those prescriptions are and how the current power-knowledge regimes are maintained by them. This paper focuses on the aspects of Foucault's theories on power that deal with gender and sexuality discourses, explicating the cable show Sex and the City to discuss its role in the perpetuation of the status quo of patriarchy and consumerism through gendered identities. The paper also identifies aspects of the show that reveal a progressive pattern of resistance …

Dorothy Shaver: Promoter Of "The American Look", Tiffany Webber-Hanchett Jan 2003

Dorothy Shaver: Promoter Of "The American Look", Tiffany Webber-Hanchett

Open Access Master's Theses

In the Depression year of 1932, Dorothy Shaver, the newly appointed vice president of Lord & Taylor, featured three young American designers in the department store's advertisements, window and store displays. Until this point, most American designers worked anonymously for manufacturers and retailers, many copying and interpreting Parisian fashions for the American market. Shaver's promotion of Elizabeth Hawes, Annette Simpson, and Edith Reuss in April 1932 was a successful effort to recognize American designers by name as the French couturiers were known. Shaver saw the need to pay tribute to domestic talent and in doing so, she became a trailblazer …

Measurement Of Correlated Multiple Light Scattering In Utracold Atomic 85Rb, P. Kulatunga, C. I. Sukenik, S. Balik, M. D. Havey, D. V. Kupriyanov, I. M. Sokolov Jan 2003

Measurement Of Correlated Multiple Light Scattering In Utracold Atomic 85Rb, P. Kulatunga, C. I. Sukenik, S. Balik, M. D. Havey, D. V. Kupriyanov, I. M. Sokolov

Physics Faculty Publications

We report an experimental study of correlated multiple light scattering in an ultracold gas of 85Rb confined in a magneto-optic trap. Measurements are made of the polarization dependence of the spatial and spectral profile of light backscattered from the sample. The results show an interferometric enhancement sensitive to coherent multiple scattering in the atomic gas, and strong variations with the polarization of the incident and detected light. The spatial width and peak value of the enhancement are found to be dependent on the sample size. Comparison of all the measurements with realistic quantum Monte Carlo simulations yields a very …

Interpretation Of The Θ+ As An Isotensor Pentaquark With Weakly Decaying Partners, Simon Capstick, Philip R. Page, Winston Roberts Jan 2003

Interpretation Of The Θ+ As An Isotensor Pentaquark With Weakly Decaying Partners, Simon Capstick, Philip R. Page, Winston Roberts

Physics Faculty Publications

The Θ+(1540), recently observed at LEPS, DIANA and CLAS, is hypothesized to be an isotensor resonance. This implies the existence of a multiplet where the Θ++, Θ+ and Θ0 have isospin-violating strong decays, and the Θ+++ and Θ− have weak decays and so are long-lived. Production mechanisms for the weakly-decaying states are discussed. The JP assignment of the Θ is most likely 1/2− or 3/2−.

Coulomb Sum Rule For 4He, J. Carlson, J. Jourdan, Rocco Schiavilla, I. Sick Jan 2003

Coulomb Sum Rule For 4He, J. Carlson, J. Jourdan, Rocco Schiavilla, I. Sick

Physics Faculty Publications

We determine the Coulomb sum for 4He using the world data on 4He(e,e′) and compare the results to calculations based on realistic interactions and including two-body components in the nuclear charge operator. We find good agreement between theory and experiment when using free-nucleon form factors. The apparent reduction of the in-medium GEp implied by IA-interpretation of the L/T-ratios measured in 4He(e,e′p) and 4He(e→,e′p→) is not confirmed.

Coping With Human Immunodeficiency Disease As Predictor Of Adherence With Antiretroviral Medication, Saurabh Mistry Jan 2003

Coping With Human Immunodeficiency Disease As Predictor Of Adherence With Antiretroviral Medication, Saurabh Mistry

Open Access Master's Theses

Infection by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a multifactor disease process in which the patient must confront an array of physiological, sociocultural, economic, and psychological stressors that have the collective potential for triggering major stress responses and psychological dysfunction. People's reactions to and the outcomes of traumatic events are mediated by their subjective style of coping. Coping is defined as a person's "constantly changing cognitive and behavioral efforts to manage specific external and internal demands that are appraised as taxing or exceeding the resources of a person". Coping, an important psychological construct has been shown to affect outcomes such as …

Hyde-Wright, A. Klein, A. V. Klimenko, S. E. Kuhn, F. Sabatié, S. Stepanyan, L. B. Weinstein, J. Yun, Et Al., Clas Collaboration

Physics Faculty Publications

We measured the inclusive electron-proton cross section in the nucleon resonance region (W <2.5 GeV) at momentum transfers Q2 below 4.5 (GeV/c)2 with the CLAS detector. The large acceptance of CLAS allowed the measurement of the cross section in a large, contiguous two-dimensional range of Q2 and x, making it possible to perform an integration of the data at fixed Q2 over the significant x interval. From these data we extracted the structure function F2 and, by including other world data, we studied the Q2 evolution of its moments, Mn(Q2), in order to estimate higher twist …

We scattered a 2.5 GeV polarized continuous electron beam at Jefferson Lab off a dynamically polarized cryogenic solid state target (15ND3) and detected the scattered electrons with the CEBAF large acceptance spectrometer. From our data, we extract the longitudinal double spin asymmetry A∥ and the spin structure function g1d. Our data are …

Subversion, Demystification, And Hegemony: Fight Club As A Postmodern Cultural Text, Matthew Ortoleva Jan 2003

Subversion, Demystification, And Hegemony: Fight Club As A Postmodern Cultural Text, Matthew Ortoleva

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis questions whether the film Fight Club, as a postmodern text, reaches a rhetorical goal of critical subversion, and if so, how does it reach this goal? Using a method of postmodern critical theory, this thesis argues that Fight Club does reach a goal of critical subversion by parodically installing and subverting modern hegemonic assumptions and challenging hegemonic cultural practices.

The South Providence Kosher Meat Boycott Of 1910: A Study Of Jewish Women’S Consumer Activism, Kimberly Susan Nusco Jan 2003

The South Providence Kosher Meat Boycott Of 1910: A Study Of Jewish Women’S Consumer Activism, Kimberly Susan Nusco

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis examines a kosher meat boycott in South Providence in 1910, placing this event in the broader context of Jewish immigrant women's activism around food issues and the popular strategy of consumer protest during the Progressive Era. Through an analysis of press accounts, census data, and community statistics, this study presents an analysis of the possible causes and impacts of this example of immigrant Jewish women's activism in early twentieth-century Providence.

As women serve as both preservers of culture and mediators of the outside world (as expressed through domestic consumption), such incidents as kosher meat boycotts provide an opportune …

Self-Concept, Self-Monitoring And The Relationship Of Human Social Interaction, Crystal Rose Fonseca Jan 2003

Self-Concept, Self-Monitoring And The Relationship Of Human Social Interaction, Crystal Rose Fonseca

Open Access Master's Theses

Self-monitoring research has developed into a significant literature that spans across disciplines. However, little research has examined the influence of self-monitoring on the development of the self-concept, which sets the stage for the current research endeavor. In the first study, it was hypothesized that directional questions “Are you extraverted?” would influence a self-concept of self-monitors to a greater extent, as they would be more likely to generate supporting thoughts which would mediate this effect. Findings generally supported the end effect of the hypothesis, but not the mediating process with high self-monitors reported a greater change in self-ratings after receiving a …

Corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete has become a major factor in reducing the service life of vital transportation and building systems due to the exposure of chloride ions. The needs of this well known phenomenon for cost effective system for protection against corrosion has become increasingly clear. Thus, corrosion behavior of stainless 316L clad reinforcing steel was investigated in this study. The object of the present investigation was to develop quantitative data that would accurately access the pitting and crevice corrosion susceptibility of stainless steel 316L rebar in concrete environments.

Electrochemical corrosion potential measurement testing was conducted to all …

Use Of Ganna Ray Attenuation; Acoustic Velocity; And Electrical Resistivity In The Extracation Of Sediment Physical Properties, Veith Altmann Jan 2003

Use Of Ganna Ray Attenuation; Acoustic Velocity; And Electrical Resistivity In The Extracation Of Sediment Physical Properties, Veith Altmann

Open Access Master's Theses

Sediment physical properties, such as porosity, shear strength, shear modulus, and grain size, from six different geographical marine environments (Central Arctic Ocean, Central Scotian Shelf, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, North-Eastern Pacific, Western Equatorial Pacific and Mid-Atlantic Ridge) were analyzed and correlated with non-destructive measurements of compressional wave velocity, bulk density and electrical resistivity.

In coarse grained sediments (median grain diameter >4 μm) with a sand fraction greater than 15%, larger grain size is associated with higher velocity. In fine grained sediments (median grain diameter < 4 μm) velocity does not correlate with median grain size. However, a pronounced linear relationship exits between compressional wave velocity and percent clay fraction (grain diameter < 2 μm) regardless of sediment grain size.

The use of electrical resistivity is limited for predicting porosity in unconsolidated sediments. In general, …
