I Yelled At My Mother: Narrative Introspection Into The Multifaceted Emotions Of Sympathy & Compassion In Care-Giving, Elizabeth A. Curry Jan 2003

I Yelled At My Mother: Narrative Introspection Into The Multifaceted Emotions Of Sympathy & Compassion In Care-Giving, Elizabeth A. Curry

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

Sympathy, empathy and compassion have been widely studied in many different disciplines but there has been little agreement among researchers. Studies often address the process of giving sympathy but little has been done with the process of receiving sympathy or the complex intersection of the two. This paper is an autoethnography that explores the relational way we develop an understanding of sympathy and compassion. I use an introspective process to study how I have come to understand compassion and sympathy in care giving for my mother. I seek a different approach to compassion and sympathy as a social process of …

Longevity Studies Of Sindbis Virus Infected Aedes Albopictus, Jonida Kosova Jan 2003

Longevity Studies Of Sindbis Virus Infected Aedes Albopictus, Jonida Kosova

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The persistent captive life cycle of a virus infected mosquito was examined. The model system used was Aedes albopictus and the Alphavirus, Sindbis virus. The adult life span of virus infected Ae. albopictus was compared to the life span of virus free Ae. albopictus. Intrathoracic inoculation was the method used to infect the experimental group of the adult female Ae. albopictus with Sindbis virus. This experimental data demonstrates that this virus does not hamper the mosquito life span. The results from this experiment can be used in future experiments, such as examining the immune system of the mosquito and its …

Determination Of Iron(Ii) Concentrations In Seawater Using Flow Injection Analysis And Chemiluminescence, Mark Keller Kinnan Jan 2003

Determination Of Iron(Ii) Concentrations In Seawater Using Flow Injection Analysis And Chemiluminescence, Mark Keller Kinnan

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Phytoplankton are a major consumer of carbon dioxide. In theory, if phytoplankton are limited in number, more carbon dioxide will be present in the atmosphere and contribute to the greenhouse effect. An increased concentration of iron would, therefore, promote phytoplankton blooms that would consume carbon dioxide. There would then be less carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to prevent heat from radiating away from earth. In 1996, an iron seeding experiment was performed in the open ocean to determine whether phytoplankton density would be increased. Phytoplankton rapidly increased in number. The research project results suggested that iron seeding the polar oceans …

Optical Studies Of Layered Chalcogenides, K G. Brown Jan 2003

Optical Studies Of Layered Chalcogenides, K G. Brown

All Volumes (2001-2008)

It is important to study the MIT transitions of 1 T-TaS2 because they occur at relatively high temperatures. This can be an advantage for IR detectors (bolometers), in terms of time and cost, whereas compared to Si- based detectors (bolometers), which work at liquid He temperatures (-269°C) and take a valuable time to refill, and purchase He, where He costs $5-6/1t. As a result of continuous experiments and analyses, TMC's could be put to further use, as the infrared detectors. Thermal vision is one of the possible applications.
It is very important to understand every detail of the 1 T-TaS2 …

Self-Esteem, Sex Differences, And Self-Disclosure: A Study Of The Closeness Of Relationships, Christien Marie Seamon Jan 2003

Self-Esteem, Sex Differences, And Self-Disclosure: A Study Of The Closeness Of Relationships, Christien Marie Seamon

All Volumes (2001-2008)

It was hypothesized that self-esteem, sex, and relationship closeness would affect self-disclosure. Participants imagined either a best friend or a casual acquaintance while completing a modified version of the Marital Self-Disclosure Questionnaire (MSDQ; Waring, Holden, & Wesley, 1998). The MSDQ measured four facets of self-disclosure: relationship, sex, money, and imbalance. Self-esteem was assessed using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (1965). In general, self-disclosure was greater for females than for males and in close relationships than in distant relationships. There were no differences in self-disclosure between high and low self-esteem individuals. In close relationships, females disclosed more than did males; in distant …

The Effects Of Self-Esteem On Attribution Making In Close Versus Casual Relationships, P Nathaniel O'Brien Jan 2003

The Effects Of Self-Esteem On Attribution Making In Close Versus Casual Relationships, P Nathaniel O'Brien

All Volumes (2001-2008)

This study explored the effect of self-esteem on attributions made in close and acquaintance relationships. It was predicted that people are more likely to attribute negative events to others and are also more likely to attribute positive events to themselves. This trend was expected more in casual relationships than in close relationships and also more for people with high self-esteem than people with low self-esteem. Students answered questions about hypothetical scenarios involving either a best friend or casual acquaintance. The measurements used in the survey were the Relationship Attribution Measure and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The second and third hypotheses …

Prejudicial Attitudes Toward Homosexuals As A Function Of Religious Orientation, Jacqueline E. Mandra Jan 2003

Prejudicial Attitudes Toward Homosexuals As A Function Of Religious Orientation, Jacqueline E. Mandra

All Volumes (2001-2008)

This study investigated prejudicial attitudes toward homosexuals as a function of individuals' religious affiliation and orientation. It was predicted that intrinsically oriented individuals would be more prejudiced toward homosexuals than would extrinsically oriented individuals. This trend was expected more for Catholics than for Protestants. Students answered several questionnaires about their attitudes toward homosexuals and their religious beliefs. Although intrinsically oriented individuals were more prejudiced toward homosexuals than were extrinsically oriented individuals, this trend was stronger for Protestants than for Catholics. Understanding how prejudicial attitudes against homosexuals are formed may help to eliminate discrimination toward this group.

Ray Tracing And Global Illumination, Jason Rupard Jan 2003

Ray Tracing And Global Illumination, Jason Rupard

All Volumes (2001-2008)

In order to represent real-world images with a computer, a program has to relate three-dimensional images on a two-dimensional monitor screen. Several ways of doing this exist with varying degrees of realism. One of the most successful methods can be grouped in a "screen-to-world method" of viewing, which is also known as "ray-tracing."
This computer graphics technology simulates light rays within a 3D environment. Since light rays have predictable physical properties, the raytracing algorithm can attempt to calculate the exact coloring of each ray/object intersection at any given pixel. Advanced levels of ray tracing allow light rays to bounce from …

Phylogenetic Analysis Of Borrelia Species Detected In Small Mammals And Ticks In Florida, Karen Overly Jan 2003

Phylogenetic Analysis Of Borrelia Species Detected In Small Mammals And Ticks In Florida, Karen Overly

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The infection prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi, the etiological agent of Lyme disease, was estimated among small mammals and ticks at two sites in northern Florida using molecular methods. Analysis of the B. burgdorferi flagellin gene in samples extracted from the ticks and small mammals was used to construct a phylogenetic tree. The phylogenetic tree was used to compare partial flagellin gene sequences of the Borrelia strains from Florida with reference Borrelia strains. The infection prevalences of small mammals at the University of North Florida and Guana River State Park were 90% and 47%, respectively, with 6 of 7 small …

The Effect On Habitat Selection By Pinfish, Lagodon Rhomboides, In The Presence Of A Predator, The Lesser Blue Crab, Callinectes Similis, Janet Mcnaughton Jan 2003

The Effect On Habitat Selection By Pinfish, Lagodon Rhomboides, In The Presence Of A Predator, The Lesser Blue Crab, Callinectes Similis, Janet Mcnaughton

All Volumes (2001-2008)

This study was performed to observe the effect of the blue crab, Callinectes similis, on the habitat preference of its prey, pinfish, Lagodon rhomboides. It was hypothesized that the pinfish would prefer the most structurally complex habitat, the live oyster clumps, but in the absence of a predator, may not show a strong association with the live oyster. It was also thought that the addition of a predator would strengthen the association with the live oyster. The experiment consisted of placing pinfish in a pool containing four distinct habitat types. The habitats were sand bottom (the least complex), …

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Strategy For Bifurcation Lesions, Pui-Yin Lee, William Ng, Wai-Hong Chen, Chu-Pak Lau Jan 2003

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Strategy For Bifurcation Lesions, Pui-Yin Lee, William Ng, Wai-Hong Chen, Chu-Pak Lau

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

True bifurcation lesion is frequently encountered in percutaneous coronary intervention. Because of the risk of acute closure after dilating the main branch lesion, intervention involving bifurcation lesion is associated with higher complication rate. Meanwhile, it is also associated with higher restenosis rate. Without anticipation and pre-defined intervention strategy, retrieval of compromised side branch after stenting the main branch may be problematic. The "Jailed Guidewire" technique was used in 32 patients with bifurcation lesions. The main branch was stented in all patients. Seven patients had stenting of both the main and side branches. Angiographic success was achieved in all main branches …

Gas Flow And Heat Transfer In Microchannels: An Experiment Al Investigation Of Compressibility, Rarefaction, And Surf Ace Roughness, Stephen Edward Turner Jan 2003

Gas Flow And Heat Transfer In Microchannels: An Experiment Al Investigation Of Compressibility, Rarefaction, And Surf Ace Roughness, Stephen Edward Turner

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation presents an experimental investigation of laminar gas flow and heat transfer through microchannels. The independent variables: relative surface roughness, Knudsen number, Reynolds number and Mach number were systematically varied to determine their influence on the friction factor and the Nusselt number. The microchannels were etched into silicon wafers, capped with glass, and have hydraulic diameters between 5 and 96 microns. Isothermal gas flow was investigated by measuring the local pressure at seven locations along the channel length. Heat transfer experiments were conducted using thin film sensors developed for direct measurement of the surface temperature.

Eight microchannel test sections …

Remote Sensing And Landscape Analysis Of Indicators Of Estuarine Condition In The Northeastern United States, Wilfrid Rodriguez Jan 2003

Remote Sensing And Landscape Analysis Of Indicators Of Estuarine Condition In The Northeastern United States, Wilfrid Rodriguez

Open Access Dissertations

I focused on four questions: (1) are measures of estuarine water quality the same across study regions; (2) are spatial setting variables and intense rainfall events important in explaining variation in water quality measures; (3) what is the relationship between patterns of land cover and estuarine condition; and (4) is land-cover change a good regional indicator of estuarine condition? Estuarine data was extracted from the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) and Coastal-2000 surveys. Geographical Information System's modeling, land cover change detection, cumulative distribution functions and multiple linear regression analyses were used to quantify land-water interactions in three regions representing …

An Integrated Approach To Finish Machining Of Rp-Produced Parts, Xiuzhi Qu Jan 2003

An Integrated Approach To Finish Machining Of Rp-Produced Parts, Xiuzhi Qu

Open Access Dissertations

Rapid Prototyping (RP) techniques are being increasingly used in industry to manufacture functional parts or tools, due to the fact that they have many benefits over traditional methods such as making parts with complex shapes and advanced material systems. However, this kind of layered manufacturing approach, decomposing the 3D CAD model into 2D layers and building the part layer by layer, still has practical limitations on surface quality and accuracy. Therefore, CNC machining is often necessary for finishing rapid manufactured parts to an appropriate accuracy and surface finish for many applications. For most RP techniques, the shrinkage levels and the …

Ferulic Acid And Peroxidase Infusion Into Disparate Vegetables And Its Effect On Texture, Karen Rose Conca Jan 2003

Ferulic Acid And Peroxidase Infusion Into Disparate Vegetables And Its Effect On Texture, Karen Rose Conca

Open Access Dissertations

The texture quality of canned fruits and vegetables can be severely degraded or softened due to thermal processing. Increased ferulic acid cross-linking and cell-cell adhesion has been associated with increased firmness of texture in fruits and vegetables. In order to test such a theory for maintaining firmness and cross-linkages of ferulic acid after thermal processing, vegetables were pre-treated/infused with peroxidase enzyme and ferulic acid. Carrots, beets and Chinese water chestnuts were chosen for their extreme differences in texture. Various methods for measuring texture were tested. Flat head compression was selected as the most sensitive method of assessing texture. Various infusion …
