Assessment Of Irrigation Schemes With Comparative Indicators In The Southeastern Anatolia Project, Hasan Deği̇rmenci̇, Hakan Büyükcangaz, Hayretti̇n Kuşcu

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, 6 comparative indicators for the assessment of irrigation system performance were applied to 12 irrigation schemes, which were components of the Southeastern Anatolian Project, for the period 1997-2001. The output per unit cropped area, output per unit command, output per unit irrigation supply, output per unit water consumed, relative water supply and irrigation ratio were calculated as 1223-9436 $ ha^{-1}, 308-5771 $ ha^{-1}, 0.12-2.16 $ m^{-3}, 0.45-2.92 $ m^{-3}, 1.00-5.90, and 7-100%, respectively. ANOVA test results indicated that among the schemes the differences in the output per unit cropped area, output per unit irrigation supply, output per …

An Econometric Analysis Of Apricot Supply And Export Demand In Turkey, İlkay Dellal, A. Ali̇ Koç Jan 2003

An Econometric Analysis Of Apricot Supply And Export Demand In Turkey, İlkay Dellal, A. Ali̇ Koç

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study estimates a supply model for apricots and an export demand model for dried apricots for Turkey to provide unit-free measure coefficients for better supply and marketing management. Using parameter estimates from the models and sample average data, elasticities of long-run supply, price-yield and export of dried apricots were computed as 0.72, 0.54 and -0.87 respectively. From the price dependent export demand model, the price flexibility of dried apricots was calculated as -0.71. In this study, the import demand elasticities of dried apricots for major destination countries were estimated and found to be inelastic. An evaluation of aggregated household …

Nitrogen Fertiliser Recovery And Yield Response Of Greenhouse Grown And Fertigated Tomato To Root - Zone Soil Water Tension, Cevat Kirda, Nafi̇ Baytorun, M. Rifat Deri̇ci̇, H. Yildiz Daşgan, Çağatay Tanriverdi̇, Zekai̇ Gümüş

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Tomatoes were grown in a plastic greenhouse under 2 irrigation programmes and four N-fertiliser concentrations (0, 100, 150 and 200 mg N l^{-1}) of irrigation water. P and K concentrations were kept constant at 30 and 200 mg l^{-1}, respectively, for all N treatments. A drip irrigation system with single laterals centred between the plant rows, spaced 50 cm apart was used for irrigation as well as for feeding fertiliser solution (i.e. fertigation) during the experiment. Tensiometers, installed in 3 replicates at 45 cm soil depth and centred mid-way between 2 plants in rows, were used for irrigation scheduling. Two …

Chunking Multisyllable Words Into Word Parts To Increase Reading Fluency And Spelling Accuracy, Joan Muriel Hutchinson Jan 2003

Chunking Multisyllable Words Into Word Parts To Increase Reading Fluency And Spelling Accuracy, Joan Muriel Hutchinson

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the statistical significance between the instructional strategies of the REW ARDS program and a control group by teaching word chunking, or multisyllablism, to increase struggling middle school readers' decoding, reading fluency, and spelling accuracy. An experimental design of pretest, intervention (REW ARDS), and posttest with non-random groups, including a control group, was utilized. The study included three teachers and 23 sixth and seventh graders from two middle schools to test the null hypothesis. The null hypothesis was accepted, not rejected, which used five separate t-tests to statistically prove significance in the areas …

The Analysis Of Partial Dominance Of Intragenic Mutations At The Adh Locus In Drosophila Melanogaster At Two Different Alcohol Concentrations, Vatan Taşkin Jan 2003

The Analysis Of Partial Dominance Of Intragenic Mutations At The Adh Locus In Drosophila Melanogaster At Two Different Alcohol Concentrations, Vatan Taşkin

Turkish Journal of Biology

The dominance of a de novo mutation determines its effect on the viability of the first and succeeding generations; therefore, it is a major factor in estimating the risk from mutations to human health. It is well established that large deletions lead to significant dominance, but until the recent development of molecular methods for amplification and sequencing of mutations it was not possible to determine the dominance of specific intragenic changes in DNA. The purpose of this study was to determine the dominance for a series of Adh-null mutations, each with a minimum mutation of a transition at one base …

Maximin Share And Minimax Envy In Fair-Division Problems, Marco Dall'aglio, Theodore P. Hill Jan 2003

Maximin Share And Minimax Envy In Fair-Division Problems, Marco Dall'aglio, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

For fair-division or cake-cutting problems with value functions which are normalized positive measures (i.e., the values are probability measures) maximin-share and minimax-envy inequalities are derived for both continuous and discrete measures. The tools used include classical and recent basic convexity results, as well as ad hoc constructions. Examples are given to show that the envy-minimizing criterion is not Pareto optimal, even if the values are mutually absolutely continuous. In the discrete measure case, sufficient conditions are obtained to guarantee the existence of envy-free partitions.

A Portable Eddy Covariance System For The Measurement Of Ecosystem–Atmosphere Exchange Of Co2, Water Vapor, And Energy, Dave P. Billesbach, M.L. Fischer, Margaret S. Torn, J.A. Berry Jan 2003

A Portable Eddy Covariance System For The Measurement Of Ecosystem–Atmosphere Exchange Of Co2, Water Vapor, And Energy, Dave P. Billesbach, M.L. Fischer, Margaret S. Torn, J.A. Berry

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

To facilitate the study of flux heterogeneity within a region, the authors have designed and field-tested a portable eddy covariance system to measure exchange of CO2, water vapor, and energy between the land surface and the atmosphere. The combination of instrumentation used in this system allows high precision flux measurements without requiring on-site infrastructure such as prepositioned towers or line power. In addition, the system contains sensors to measure a suit of soil, climatic, and energy-related parameters that are needed to quality control the fluxes and to characterize the flux footprint. The physical design and instrument packaging used in the …

Phase Retrieval Using A Genetic Algorithm On The Systematic Image-Based Optical Alignment Test Bed, Jaime R. Taylor Jan 2003

Phase Retrieval Using A Genetic Algorithm On The Systematic Image-Based Optical Alignment Test Bed, Jaime R. Taylor

Physics Faculty Research

NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center’s Systematic Image-Based Optical Alignment (SIBOA) Testbed was developed to test phase retrieval algorithms and hardware techniques. Individuals working with the facility developed the idea of implementing phase retrieval by breaking the determination of the tip/tilt of each mirror apart from the piston motion (or translation) of each mirror. Presented in this report is an algorithm that determines the optimal phase correction associated only with the piston motion of the mirrors.

Protections For Transgender Employees, Jennifer L. Levi Jan 2003

Protections For Transgender Employees, Jennifer L. Levi

Media Presence

Many transgender employees routinely face demotions, unfavorable conditions of employment, and even discriminatory terminations--due not to job-related problems but to employers' discomfort with and animus against transgender people. Lawyers may look to several sources of law in order to redress the rights of transgender clients who face adverse treatment in such situations, including transgender-specific nondiscrimination laws, state and federal sex discrimination laws, and state disability laws. Although courts historically have found transgender people excluded from coverage under certain laws, developing case law supports the arguments of transgender employees who face workplace discrimination.

Protecting Transgender Families: Strategies For Advocates, Taylor Flynn Jan 2003

Protecting Transgender Families: Strategies For Advocates, Taylor Flynn

Media Presence

This Article discusses the difficulties involving divorce for married transgender women and men in the United States. For a transgender (trans) man or woman, what begins as the dissolution of a relationship may be transformed into a public nightmare in which the individual is forced to defend the authenticity of his or her gender in the face of relentless, brutal, and humiliating questions about the most intimate details of personal anatomy and sexual practices.

The Author suggest that the courts should point to the medical standards of care, which conclude that sex is determined by gender identity: the court then …

The Glass Ceiling For Women In Business, Megan Abels Jan 2003

The Glass Ceiling For Women In Business, Megan Abels

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

What better inspiration for research on the glass ceiling than the words of such influential women. As a young woman who will soon graduate college and enter the business world, in a field still dominated by men, the glass ceiling was a natural choice for my Presidential Scholar's research. When I first heard mention of the topic, it sounded like an age-old concept; one that was no longer in the public perception for the simple fact that it no longer existed. All my life, I have been led to believe that as a woman I can do anything, and that …

Creating Chaos: Us' Policies In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Kelly Shell Jan 2003

Creating Chaos: Us' Policies In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Kelly Shell

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Since 1885, when the United States' government became the first to officially recognize King Leopold's claim to the Congo, the United States has continuously undermined the democratic attempts and economic prosperity of the Congolese population. Throughout the DRC's political history the United States has successfully used covert operations under the guise of the United Nations, clandestine CIA maneuvers, and/or the pretense of humanitarian relief to control American interests in the Great Lakes Region. Although other western nations have used their own means to advance their interests in the Congo, this paper will focus on the US' role in the Congo. …

Plagiarism, Melissa Cast-Brede Jan 2003

Plagiarism, Melissa Cast-Brede

Criss Library Faculty Publications

The news media today is filled with articles on plagiarism. Well known figures such as Stephen Ambrose and Doris Kearns Goodwin parade across our newspapers charged with plagiarizing. Studies from around the country show a high number of high school and college students admitting to using others' works as their own. It's fairly clear that more should be done to prevent plagiarism. In reviewing the literature, prevention of plagiarism involves three issues: understanding why it happens, detecting it and structuring assignments to prevent it.

Thinking Globally, Acting Locally: Documenting Environmental Activism In New York State, Brian Keough, Amy Schindler

Criss Library Faculty Publications

A significant component of the political history of New York and other states in the second half of the twentieth century is the extraordinary growth of a social movement directed at environmental issues. The authors completed a case study of a documentation project to collect archival records about the history of environmental affairs in New York State. This article critically examines documentation strategy and the evolution of statewide documentation projects in New York, describes the implementation of a documentation project for environmental affairs, and suggests methods for improving the identification and selection of records of enduring value. Self-Perceptions Of Speech Language Pathologists-In-Training Before And After Pseudostuttering Experiences On The Telephone, Manish Rami, Joseph Kalinowski, Andrew Stuart, Michael P. Rastatter Jan 2003

Self-Perceptions Of Speech Language Pathologists-In-Training Before And After Pseudostuttering Experiences On The Telephone, Manish Rami, Joseph Kalinowski, Andrew Stuart, Michael P. Rastatter

Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications

Purpose: This survey investigated the effect of pseudostuttering experiences on self-perceptions of 29 female, graduate students enrolled in a graduate seminar in stuttering.

Method: Perceptions of self prior to, and immediately after, participation in five scripted telephone calls which contained pseudostuttering were measured via a 25-item semantic differential scale.

Results: Data showed that the participants perceived themselves as significantly more (p < 0.002) withdrawn, tense, avoiding, afraid, introverted, nervous, self-conscious, anxious, quiet, inflexible, hesitant, dull, passive, unpleasant, insecure, unfriendly, guarded, and reticent. after their pseudostuttering telephone call experiences.

Conclusions: Findings suggests that the ‘pseudostuttering’ experiences have an impact on self-perceptions and that the experience of ‘adopting the disability of a person who stutter’s’ may provide insight as to the social and emotional impact of communicative failure. …

Book Review: Culture, Ideology And Society, Rory J. Conces

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Fatos Tarifa’s Culture, Ideology and Society was my companion on a recent trip to the Balkans. Having read and reviewed one of his other books, The Quest for Legitimacy and the Withering Away of Utopia, I thought Culture, Ideology and Society would not only offer a glimpse of how a social scientist turned enlightened diplomat examines the lenses through which sociologists, philosophers, and film makers look at the world, but also some insight into the categories and concepts that are useful in better understanding the Balkans. I believe the book was somewhat successful at doing both.
