"Magic City" Class, Community, And Reform In Roanoke, Virginia, 1882-1912, Paul R. Dotson, Jr.
"Magic City" Class, Community, And Reform In Roanoke, Virginia, 1882-1912, Paul R. Dotson, Jr.
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The "Magic City" of Roanoke, Virginia, the fastest growing urban area in the South from 1880 to 1890, exemplified everything that New South boosters claimed to have wanted. The prototypical New South city, Roanoke emerged as an extreme version of all that was supposed to remedy the South's post-Civil War economic stagnation. The city's promise, however, revealed the empty promise of the New South. Despite intensive demographic and industrial growth, by the early twentieth century, Roanoke failed to evolve into the dynamic and modern city prophesied by New South visionaries. Its abysmal conditions, racial turmoil, class conflicts, and superficial "reforms" …

The general objective of this study was to provide updated estimates of value of the green industry in Louisiana. Data collection was conducted for the production sector (Nursery Growers and Sod Producers, and Landscape Design, Installation and Maintenance Services) and the Golf Industry. In addition, expenditures on green industry products and services incurred by other sectors were obtained. Among those sectors were churches and cemeteries, public schools (elementary and secondary), public colleges and universities, private schools (elementary, secondary and college/university), parish/city grounds, state parks, road shoulder and median maintenance, and airports. To conduct the surveys, listings from those sectors were …
Resistant Rice Starch Development, Siow Ying Tan
Resistant Rice Starch Development, Siow Ying Tan
LSU Master's Theses
This study showed that enzyme treatments were effective in producing resistant starch from rice flour and starch. Rice starch produced higher resistant starch yields than rice flour. The lower resistant starch yields in rice flour could be attributed to the presence of lipids and proteins which were competitively binding to amylose, resulting in decreased recrystallization of amylose. The gelatinization type and incubation periods were not as influential as enzyme treatments in the resistant starch formation. The rapid visco amylograph (RVA) analysis indicated that the gelatinized samples have minimal pasting characteristics since they had been gelatinized prior to enzyme treatments. Pasting …

Effect Of Temperature On Efficiency Of In Situ Bioremediation Technology: A Laboratory Microcosm And Field Study, Javed Iqbal
LSU Master's Theses
Laboratory microcosm experiment and parallel ex situ bioremediation studies were conducted to study the effect of temperature on in situ bioremediation systems installed at Superfund site in southeast Georgia. Laboratory microcosms, inoculated with PAHs/phenols specific microorganisms, at high temperatures (42±2°C; 107±3°F) demonstrated a significant reduction of residual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and selected phenols from 4927±1356ng/g dry weight soil to 1158±530ng/g with a kinetic rate of 76.1±16.8ng/g/day (84% reduction; p≤0.01) in 49days. High temperature non-inoculated microcosms were reduced of residual PAHs and phenols from 1117±436ng/g to 341±116ng/g with a kinetic rate of 15.8±6.5ng/g/day (65% reduction; p≤0.01) in 49days. Low temperature …
Studio Design Critique: Student And Faculty Expectations And Reality, Elizabeth Marie Graham
Studio Design Critique: Student And Faculty Expectations And Reality, Elizabeth Marie Graham
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis explores the use of criticism in the landscape architectural design studio. Criticism is a very useful tool in the communication of ideas and the evaluation of designs, yet its application in design studios has not reached its full potential in the discipline of landscape architecture. To develop an understanding of criticism as a pedagogical tool in the design studio, along with faculty and students expectations of criticism, this thesis uses a two-step approach. The first step explores the intentions of critique used by design instructors during desk crits and juries. The second step explores the students’ perceptions of …
Use Of Urine Ph To Predict Incidence Of Ketosis In Transition Dairy Cows, Amy Elizabeth Beem
Use Of Urine Ph To Predict Incidence Of Ketosis In Transition Dairy Cows, Amy Elizabeth Beem
LSU Master's Theses
Forty-one (10 primiparous and 31 multiparous) Holstein cows were used in an experiment to determine the effects of prepartum dietary energy (PDE) and supplemental Ca-propionate on the incidence of ketosis in transition dairy cows and to evaluate the usefulness of urine pH as a predictor for ketosis. Treatment factors were prepartum dietary energy concentration (normal vs. high) with or without 113.5g Ca-Propionate/day (Nutro Cal®, Kemin Industries, Inc., Des Moines, IA). All cows were fed the same basal diet postpartum. Ca-propionate supplementation continued postpartum. Cows were individually fed and dry matter intakes (DMI) were measured daily. Milk production was measured and …
Rhizome Manipulation Affects Growth And Development Of Ornamental Gingers, Maria Del Pilar Paz
Rhizome Manipulation Affects Growth And Development Of Ornamental Gingers, Maria Del Pilar Paz
LSU Master's Theses
Ornamental gingers are popular cut flowers and have been promoted as a promising potted flower crop because of unique foliage, long-lasting colorful bracts, and few pest problems. Rhizomes are the primary means of propagation in late spring followed by shoot growth and flowering, and plants enter dormancy under short days in the fall. Termination of dormancy is important for greenhouse forcing and extending the growing season. Rhizomes of five ginger species (Curcuma alismatifolia Gagnep., C. cordata L., C. roscoeana Wallich, Globba winittii C.H. Wright, and Kaempferia galanga L.) were either: 1) stored for 0 to 16 weeks at 15, 20 …

Bombarding The City Of The Dead: Who Has A Right To The Past?, Corey David Hotard
LSU Master's Theses
This study focuses on the relationship between tourism and archaeology at Saint Louis Cemetery Number One in New Orleans. In the past two decades, the discipline of archaeology has been thrust into the gaze of the public. The Information Age has led to the increased accessibility of archaeological sites to anyone who may have an interest. Due to this increased accessibility, professional archaeologists have turned to public archaeology in order to satiate the public’s curiosity. Although public archaeology is a growing field, a good bit of the subject still deals mainly with legislation and preservation rather than direct contact with …

Characterization Of Protein Secretion In Mycobacterium Leprae Using Phoa Fusions In Escherichia Coli And Mycobacterium Smegmatis, Marina Noemi Torrero
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Complete sequencing and annotation of the M. leprae genome has provided new information related to proteins constituting its hypothetical proteome. Since M. leprae can not be grown in vitro, novel approaches are needed to determine which proteins are expressed during infection and whether these proteins are related to pathogenesis. Secreted proteins represent a distinct group of protein with respect to their structure and function, contribution to virulence and are of particular importance for vaccine development because they are often immunogenic and have the potential to be recognized early in infection. The objectives of this study were: 1) to identify putatively …
"Baleful Weeds And Precious-Juiced Flowers": Romeo And Juliet And Renaissance Medical Discourse, Erica Nicole Daigle
"Baleful Weeds And Precious-Juiced Flowers": Romeo And Juliet And Renaissance Medical Discourse, Erica Nicole Daigle
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis claims that Shakespeare exaggerated the characterization of two figures in Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence and the apothecary, to make a statement about the conditions of medical treatment in sixteenth century London. These two figures represent two very different approaches to healing, one that is informed with ancient holistic medical theory and one that is driven by economics, and this work attempts to explain the cultural conditions that warranted such a discrepancy in the play. I address these two medical figures in the contexts of the events of the text, of the contemporary medical profession, and of materialism …

(Excerpt)
Music shapes the worshiping assembly week by week The liturgy we sing becomes both praise and proclamation in the mouths of the gathered congregation. So how are we to know what it is we should sing? Our worship books are now filled with music from around the globe, from perspectives not even known to most of us just a generation ago. Is that music part of our local expression, and if not, how are we to make it so? This address will outline a process, responsive contextualization, which invites a local assembly to enter into the process of engagement …
The Relationship Between City Manager Archetypes And Cities' Stages Of Development, Craig Waldron
The Relationship Between City Manager Archetypes And Cities' Stages Of Development, Craig Waldron
School of Business Student Theses and Dissertations
This was an exploratory study that examined the different managerial archetypes among city managers in cities that were at different stages of their development cycles. Past research has identified the archetypes of the neutral management expert, community facilitator/broker, public entrepreneur/community builder, politician, and caretaker/conserver. In addition, the various management skills as identified by Riccucci (1995) and Linn (1984) were analyzed. These include political skills, management and leadership skills, situational factors, experience in government, technical expertise, and strategy and personality.
The cities studied, all in Minnesota, included two growing communities, two mature communities, and two communities that were in decline. Cities …

Inculturation Of Worship: Forty Years Of Progress And Tradition, Anscar J. Chupungco
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
For four years last century I had the rare privilege of taking part in a series of liturgical consultations organized by the Lutheran World Federation. I say "rare," because it is not often that a Roman Catholic becomes a member of an international study group of Lutherans and, to my gratification, declared by the group an honorary Lutheran! (By coincidence-or perhaps providence-Martin Luther and I were born on the same day.) During those memorable years I made lasting friendship with Lutheran scholars such as Gordon Lathrop and S. Anita Stauffer. Friendship means dialogue, and dialogue with them richly endowed …

of the 1970s there were those who objected to the idea of liturgy as "action" because they thought it placed an undue emphasis on human activity instead of on God's work through the means of grace.4 Obviously, liturgy is a work performed by a person or a community, so human action is unavoidable. It is a human act to read scriptures, preach sermons, baptize, or proclaim the words of institution, even though we confess that the Holy Spirit works through these means of grace to create or awaken faith. One may also say that liturgy, …

Level Of Essentialness Of A Node In Flowcharts And Its Application To Program Testing, Osman Kandara
Level Of Essentialness Of A Node In Flowcharts And Its Application To Program Testing, Osman Kandara
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Program testing is important to develop bug free software. A common form of program testing involves selecting test cases which execute (cover) a given set W of statements in the program. In regression testing, W typically forms a small subset of the program. It is often possible to find an alternate small set W so that execution of W' implies execution of W. We develop concepts and algorithms for finding W' as small as possible with the condition that the statements in W' are "close" to those in W in terms of program structure. These concepts generalize the notion of …
A Comparison Of Finfish Assemblages On Subtidal Oyster Shell (Cultched Oyster Lease) And Mud Bottom In Barataria Bay, Louisiana, John Plunket
LSU Master's Theses
Recent research suggests that oyster reefs provide unique three-dimensional hard bottom habitat for many fish species. Along the northern shore of the Gulf of Mexico, oyster shell bottoms are predominantly flat, subtidal and cultched, lacking the vertical relief and spatial heterogeneity provided by natural reefs. This study compared finfish assemblages, gut contents, and macroinvertebrate assemblages at subtidal oyster shell (cultched oyster lease) and mud bottoms in Barataria Bay, Louisiana. Three mud and three shell sites were sampled on seven dates from October 2001 to October 2002, using gill nets and substrate trays. Data from the gill nets were used to …
Ultrasonic Characterization Of Engineering Performance Of Oriented Strandboard, Ronnie Yunheu Vun
Ultrasonic Characterization Of Engineering Performance Of Oriented Strandboard, Ronnie Yunheu Vun
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Direct-contact (DC) and non-contact (NC) ultrasonic transmission (UT) methods were developed to characterize the structural performance of oriented strandboard (OSB). The UT variable velocity was shown to be sensitive to the physical impediments caused by flake interfacial boundaries and embedded voids. Both attenuation and root mean square (RMS) voltage were good indicators of the “zero void” densification level for OSB, a point of the greatest transmissivity of the stress wave energy. For both DC and NC methods, the predicted densities of the model were validated for spatial distribution over each OSB type. Based on the EN300 standard for panel manufacturing, …
The Use Of The Bang-3 Polymer Gel To Quantify The Three-Dimensional Dose Distribution Of Imrt, Paul Anthony Bruce
The Use Of The Bang-3 Polymer Gel To Quantify The Three-Dimensional Dose Distribution Of Imrt, Paul Anthony Bruce
LSU Master's Theses
The sophistication of radiation therapy delivery techniques at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center (MBPCC) creates the need for an advanced dosimetric system that can quantify and verify the dose distributions in three-dimensions. Current dosimetric systems perform this dose analysis in only one or two dimensions. This paper evaluates the application of BANG-3™ polymer gel dosimetry to quantify the 3-D dose distribution of Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) using a "step and shoot" approach. The gel was irradiated by 10 MV photons at a dose rate of 400 MU/min. Relaxation rate maps were computed from proton density and T2-weighted magnetic …

Using Trabecular Architecture Of The Proximal Femur To Determine Age At Death: An Accuracy Test Of Two Methods, Wendy Michelle Jones
Using Trabecular Architecture Of The Proximal Femur To Determine Age At Death: An Accuracy Test Of Two Methods, Wendy Michelle Jones
LSU Master's Theses
Osteologists and forensic researchers are often called upon to determine age at death for skeletal remains. Although there are common methods in wide use, new methods are always sought. This study evaluates the accuracy of two radiographic methods of determining age by looking at the changes in the trabecular architecture of the proximal femur. These two methods are the Szilvassy and Kritscher (1990) method and the Walker and Lovejoy (1985) method. Samples were taken from four skeletal collections. Radiographs were taken of each individual and both Szilvassy and Kritscher’s (1990) phases of trabecular change and Walker and Lovejoy’s (1985) phases …
Film Cooling From Cylindrical Holes In Transverse Slots, Mohammed Altorairi
Film Cooling From Cylindrical Holes In Transverse Slots, Mohammed Altorairi
LSU Master's Theses
In this study, heat transfer coefficient and film effectiveness distributions are investigated for a film cooling hole configuration that has inclined holes discharging into a tangential slot before interactions with the mainstream. The cylindrical holes are inclined 35° along the mainstream direction. The effect of coolant-to-mainstream blowing ratio is examined for M=0.5 and M=1.0. Different slot width to hole ratios and also the effect of hole exit condition (square edge and triangular edge) is considered. The mainstream velocity and free-stream turbulence intensity in the low speed wind tunnel are 9 m/s and 7% respectively and the mainstream Reynolds number based …
Transmission Of Electromagnetic Power Through A Biological Medium, Ripan Das
Transmission Of Electromagnetic Power Through A Biological Medium, Ripan Das
LSU Master's Theses
Primary goal of this work is to study transmission of EM power through a multilayered biological medium. For a particular case study, EM power transmission from an external transmitter to a coupled receiver implanted inside a biological medium simulating a human body is studied to find solutions for factors such as optimum transmission frequency and excitation current. Different aspects of interaction of EM waves with biological bodies and tissues are discussed. Two major factors that may affect transmission of EM power through a biological body are absorption and reflection of EM waves. A simulation in which exact Maxwell's equations are …

The Effect Of Aging On The Immune Response To Vaccination In The Horse, Daniel H. Fermaglich
The Effect Of Aging On The Immune Response To Vaccination In The Horse, Daniel H. Fermaglich
LSU Master's Theses
Vaccination programs are designed to protect an animal from infection, however, depending upon the age and health of the animal vaccination may not stimulate a protective humoral response. It is possible that, as in the human and mouse models, geriatric equines may be less responsive than their younger counterparts to current vaccination protocols. The purpose of this study was to identify an age related diminution in the primary and secondary immune responses of geriatric horses in response to vaccination. Two groups of horses were sampled. The first group consisted of an open herd of 39 privately owned horses, varying in …
Exploring Geometric, Kinematic And Behavioral Scalability Of Microscopic Traffic Simulation Systems, Srikanth Chakravarthy
Exploring Geometric, Kinematic And Behavioral Scalability Of Microscopic Traffic Simulation Systems, Srikanth Chakravarthy
LSU Master's Theses
Even with today's remarkable advancement in computing power, microscopic simulation modeling remains a computationally intensive process that imposes limitations on its potential use for modeling large-scale transportation networks. Research and practice have repeatedly demonstrated that microscopic simulation runs can be excessively time-consuming, depending on the network size, the number of simulated entities (vehicles), and the computational resources available. While microscopic features of a simulated system collectively define the overall system characteristics, it is argued that the microscopic simulation process itself is not necessarily free of redundancy, which if reduced, could substantially improve the computational efficiency of simulation systems without compromising …
A Risk-Averse Strategy For Blackjack Using Fractional Dynamic Programming, Ryan A. Dutsch
A Risk-Averse Strategy For Blackjack Using Fractional Dynamic Programming, Ryan A. Dutsch
LSU Master's Theses
We present how blackjack is related to a discrete-time control problem, rather than a zero-sum game. Using the compiler Visual C++, we write a program for a strategy for blackjack, but instead of maximizing the expected value, we use a risk-averse approach. We briefly describe how this risk-averse strategy is solved by using a special type of dynamic programming called fractional dynamic programming.
