Throughout history, patterned approaches to determining and subdividing time have been considered among the greatest natural mathematical connections ever conceived by mankind. Over the years, this mathematical quest for time has certainly been shrouded in utility (as evidenced by atomic clocks that are accurate to within trillionths of a second by using the mathematically predictable resonance frequencies of elements such as Cesium), but the more romantic and aesthetic virtues of historical time pieces lie in the interplay between pure mathematics and architectural beauty. Although the movement of celestial bodies relative to one another has acted as a basis for the …

Utilizing Structure Property Correlations To Predict And Analyze Two Derivatives Of An Ampicillin Homologous Series, C. Malesa, J. Stoddard, Ronald Bartzatt

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Structure Property Correlation methods such as regression analysis and pattern recognition are applied to predict the molecular properties of two members of an ampicillin homologous series. The pentyl and hexyl esters of ampicillin are also evaluated for their similarity to other penicillins by use of multiple regression, contingency tables, cluster analysis, correspondence analysis, self organizing tree algorithms, factor analysis, principal component analysis, box plots, and other graphing methods. Other members of the homologous series include methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl esters of ampicillin which have been previously synthesized and tested in tissue culture against Escherichia coli. All of the tested …

Introducing The Global Diffusion Of The Internet Series, Peter Wolcott, Seymour E. Goodman Jan 2003

Introducing The Global Diffusion Of The Internet Series, Peter Wolcott, Seymour E. Goodman

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Many genes can play a role in multiple biological processes or molecular functions. Identifying multifunctional genes at the genome-wide level and studying their properties can shed light upon the complexity of molecular events that underpin cellular functioning, thereby leading to a better understanding of the functional landscape of the cell. However, to date, genome-wide analysis of multifunctional genes (and the proteins they encode) has been limited. Here we introduce a computational approach that uses known functional annotations to extract genes playing a role in at least two distinct biological processes. We leverage functional genomics data sets for three organisms—H. sapiens, …

Global Diffusion Of The Internet - I: India: Is The Elephant Learning To Dance?, Peter Wolcott, Seymour E. Goodman Jan 2003

Global Diffusion Of The Internet - I: India: Is The Elephant Learning To Dance?, Peter Wolcott, Seymour E. Goodman

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

With his proclamation in 1998 that "IT is India's tomorrow", Prime Minister Vajpayee captured a vision of a 21st century India substantially different from that of the previous century, with its high levels of poverty, bloated bureaucracies, and protectionist policies. He envisioned the new India as a major IT power, fully integrated with the global economy, bringing about substantial domestic and international benefit. The Internet is a key to this vision, both as an enabler of technology-based change, and as an indicator of the vision's fulfillment.

Using an analytic framework developed by the authors and others, this study documents the …

An Investigation Of The Influence Of Irish As An L1 Or L2 On Subsequent Instructed Language Acquisition In L3 Or L4, Corina Griffin Jan 2003

An Investigation Of The Influence Of Irish As An L1 Or L2 On Subsequent Instructed Language Acquisition In L3 Or L4, Corina Griffin

Theses

Research in Ireland to date has paid little attention to the fact that all foreign language teaching occurs in the context where the FL (foreign language) is an L3. The present study examines the extent to which students transfer or modify strategies they had previously deployed in learning Irish to their L3/L4. It is proposed that students are deploying the same strategies in their learning of Irish as an L1/L2 and the foreign language (FL) as an L3/L4, thus indicating a similar approach to the learning process. Cognitive, metacognitive and socio-affective strategies are examined. The research also focuses on differences …

Trace Analysis Of Organic Substances, Alan Giltinan Jan 2003

Trace Analysis Of Organic Substances, Alan Giltinan

Theses

One of the major challenges facing the pharmaceutical industry is the control of the amount of trace contaminants during the manufacture of organic substances. Lowering the level of contamination improves the quality of the product and reduces possible side effects.

One of the main techniques used to detect trace contaminants is UV-VIS spectroscopy, where the unique absorption fingerprint of a chemical reveals its presence. UV-VIS absorption is based upon the Beer-Lambert Law. The critical point to note about this law is that the absorption is exponentially dependent on both the concentration of the absorber and the pathlength traversed by the …

Jack Of All Trades Or Master Of One? Specialization, Trade And Money, Gabriele Camera, Robert R. Reed, Christopher Waller Jan 2003

Jack Of All Trades Or Master Of One? Specialization, Trade And Money, Gabriele Camera, Robert R. Reed, Christopher Waller

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

We consider a model of decentralized exchange where individuals choose the set of goods they produce. Specialization involves producing a smaller set of goods and doing it more proÞciently. In doing so, agents reduce production costs, but also reduce the ease of trading their output. We derive the equilibrium degree of specialization and examine how it is affected by underlying fundamentals. Due to the existence of a hold-up problem, individuals specialize too little relative to the social optimum. Introducing money leads to more specialization relative to barter and increases welfare.

Opening Remarks, Gary A. Munneke

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Interestingly, there is hardly any scholarship, and very little discussion, about the MacCrate Report outside of the clinical and skills programs in the traditional segments of legal education. I am not a clinician, although in the past I have taught courses in interviewing and counseling, and negotiations. I teach Law Practice Management and Professional Responsibility, which address professional skills and values; but I teach Torts as well, and my Torts colleagues, like teachers in other traditional subjects, really do not focus on these issues very much. So, one of the things I wanted to do with this symposium was to …

This Article will explore the development of multijurisdictional practice in the United States and abroad. Part III will discuss the positions taken by various participants in the current debate on multijurisdictional practice. Part IV will examine the actions of the American Bar Association House of Delegates in August 2002 and the implications of those actions for lawyers. Part V will conclude that MJP reform is critical to the future of the legal profession in the United States as a fundamental tool for American business to remain competitive in the globalized marketplace for goods and services.

Studies On The Opto-Electronic Constants Of Alkali-Halide Crystals, Mahmoud A. Salem Jan 2003

Studies On The Opto-Electronic Constants Of Alkali-Halide Crystals, Mahmoud A. Salem

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this presentation, the correlation between refractive index n of alkali-halide crystals and both energy band gap E_{g} and Pauling's electronegativity difference \Delta x have been studied. The following relations are proposed for estimating the refractive index n: n^2 + C = A / E_{g} ^{1 / 2} and n^2 + C = E / (\Delta x)^{0.425}, where A, C and E are numerical constants. In addition, an interrelation between the energy band gap E_{g} and electronegativity difference \Delta x has been also proposed. The proposed relation is E_g = 4.45 (\Delta x)^{0.85}. The estimated values of the refractive index …
