Context-Sensitive Binding: Flexible Programming Using Transparent Context Maintenance, Rohan Sen, Gruia-Catalin Roman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Context-aware computing is a new paradigm whose emergence has been fostered by a growing reliance on light and mobile computing devices, which adapt their behavior to changing environmental conditions. The dynamic nature of the environment is a direct result of the mobility of people and devices. Because the development of applications that entail a significant level of dynamic adaptation is a difficult and error-prone task, new design methods and constructs are needed. Precise and flexible specification of the resources needed to operate in specific contexts combined with transparent context management can simplify the development process. In this paper we propose …

The Endocrine Regulation Of Wing Polymorphism In Insects: State Of The Art, Recent Surprises, And Future Directions, Anthony J. Zera Nov 2003

The Endocrine Regulation Of Wing Polymorphism In Insects: State Of The Art, Recent Surprises, And Future Directions, Anthony J. Zera

Anthony Zera Publications

The endocrine mechanisms controlling the development and reproduction of flight-capable (long-winged) and flightless (short-winged or wingless) morphs of wing-polymorphic insects have been intensively investigated. The "classical model," put forward in the early 1960s, postulates that morph-specific differences in development and reproduction are caused by variation in the titers of juvenile hormone (JH) and/or ecdysone. Despite decades of study, the importance of these hormones in regulating wing polymorphism in aphids and planthoppers remains uncertain. This uncertainly is largely a consequence of technical and size constraints which have severely limited the types of endocrine approaches that can be used in these insects. …

Parent Involvement And Reading: Using Curriculum-Based Measurement To Assess The Effects Of Paired Reading, Cathy L. Fiala, Susan M. Sheridan Nov 2003

Parent Involvement And Reading: Using Curriculum-Based Measurement To Assess The Effects Of Paired Reading, Cathy L. Fiala, Susan M. Sheridan

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study examined the effectiveness of a paired reading intervention using curriculum-based measurement (CBM) probes to document reading progress for one fourth-and two third-grade students. These students were considered below-average readers. Parents and children used the paired reading method in their homes for 10 minutes, four times a week. Children and parents were also provided with reading material at their instructional level. Results showed that the children’s reading accuracy and rates increased from baseline to follow-up on CBM measures and on pre/posttesting. In addition, students and parents gave favorable treatment acceptability ratings for paired reading. Implications for future research are …

A Novel Normal-To-Plane Space Efficient Micro Corner Cube Retroreflector With Improved Fill Factor, Rahul Agarwal Nov 2003

A Novel Normal-To-Plane Space Efficient Micro Corner Cube Retroreflector With Improved Fill Factor, Rahul Agarwal

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A Corner Cube Retro-reflector (CCR) is a device that can be used as transmitters in wireless free space optical communication systems, or remote sensing instruments. A novel approach to fabricate the CCR is developed, where almost 100% of the planar chip area acts as the CCR compared to the maximum of 33% in the prior MEMS CCRs. Unlike the conventional micro machined CCRs that have two planes (mirrors of the CCR) normal to the surface of the wafer, our approach yields all the mirrors within the bulk of the wafer, ensuring very high packing densities and wide acceptance angles. The …

Feasibility And Emissions Of Compression Ignition Engines Fueled With Waste Vegetable Oil, Morgan H. Crawford Nov 2003

Feasibility And Emissions Of Compression Ignition Engines Fueled With Waste Vegetable Oil, Morgan H. Crawford

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Research and experience has shown that vegetable oil can be processed, by transesterification, into a useable fuel for compression ignition engines. Earlier research examined using straight vegetable oil as a fuel, but found it to cause detrimental engine problems. Trial and error has shown that heating the vegetable oil prior to injection, is a viable option. A diesel vehicle engine was operated for over 188 hours or approximately 7,000 miles, using waste cooking oil as fuel. The longevity of the vehicle engine was limited by an undetermined engine failure.

Using stationary testing, with no engine load and various power settings, …
