Diversifying The Professions: Using Collaboration And Distance Education To Grow Our Own In Northeast Nebraska , Vicky Jones, William Lopez, Donna Niemeyer, Karen Rieger, Esperanza Villalobos Nov 2003

Diversifying The Professions: Using Collaboration And Distance Education To Grow Our Own In Northeast Nebraska , Vicky Jones, William Lopez, Donna Niemeyer, Karen Rieger, Esperanza Villalobos

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 8th Annual National Conference (2003)

Faced with a dramatic shift in population demographics and a 1000% increase in the number of English Language Learner elementary school children, four colleges and universities and seven public school districts have joined forces to increase the number minority, bilingual, and ESL endorsed teachers in northeast Nebraska. This panel- workshop session will discuss the project from multiple perspectives. Public school representatives reveal their challenges in serving a largely non-English speaking student body and their difficulties recruiting minority teachers to rural Nebraska. Higher education representatives explore the barriers and opportunities of articulating course over a five year period and delivering the …

Crossing Boundaries To Engage In Difficult Dialogues , Judy A Rutledge Purnell Nov 2003

Crossing Boundaries To Engage In Difficult Dialogues , Judy A Rutledge Purnell

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 8th Annual National Conference (2003)

Crossing boundaries that lead to difficult dialogue touches upon the core of my academic existence. I teach about Africa and the world of Africans on a small predominately white campus outside of a major metro area. The topics that are introduced in my classes cross over many academic areas. With Africa as the starting point of all discussions, students gradually develop an "Afrocentric" perspective per the discussions of Asante. Not because it is the focus of the class, but because Africa is the origin of civilization according to Diop and others.

Surviving The "Diverse" (White) University , Sharon Elise, Garry Rolison

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 8th Annual National Conference (2003)

This paper reports findings from a study of Black student retention at a predominantly white state university. Race, class, age, and gender mediate Black student experience while middle-class status, experience in predominantly white school settings, a pragmatic view of college, parental expectations, and residence in a Black community affect retention.

Differences In Privacy Policies Among Commercial, Educational And Governmental Web Sites: A Cross-Sectional Content Analysis, Rashad Bayramov Nov 2003

Differences In Privacy Policies Among Commercial, Educational And Governmental Web Sites: A Cross-Sectional Content Analysis, Rashad Bayramov

Theses

The present study investigates the differences in the way commercial, educational and governmental Web sites communicate their informational privacy practices through the privacy policies posted on the Web. Specifically, the research identifies differences in the coverage of the Fair Information Practice principles within the analyzed privacy policies. The study suggests that the sharpest dissimilarity exists in the coverage of the principles of Access (allowing Web users to review and update the data collected about them) and Security (protecting users' personal information during transmission and subsequent storage), where commercial sites greatly outnumber educational and governmental sites. However, governmental and educational sites …

Robust Pi Controller Design Satisfying Sensitivity And Uncertainty Specifications, O. Yaniv, Mark L. Nagurka Nov 2003

Robust Pi Controller Design Satisfying Sensitivity And Uncertainty Specifications, O. Yaniv, Mark L. Nagurka

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper presents a control design method for determining proportional-integral-type controllers satisfying specifications on gain margin, phase margin, and an upper bound on the (complementary) sensitivity for a finite set of plants. The approach can be applied to plants that are stable or unstable, plants given by a model or measured data, and plants of any order, including plants with delays. The algorithm is efficient and fast, and as such can be used in near real-time to determine controller parameters (for online modification of the plant model including its uncertainty and/or the specifications). The method gives an optimal controller for …

Embryonic Origins Of A Motor System: Motor Dendrites Form A Myotopic Map In Drosophila, Matthias Landgraf, Victoria Jeffrey, Miki Fujioka, James B. Jaynes, Michael Bate Nov 2003

Embryonic Origins Of A Motor System: Motor Dendrites Form A Myotopic Map In Drosophila, Matthias Landgraf, Victoria Jeffrey, Miki Fujioka, James B. Jaynes, Michael Bate

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

The organisational principles of locomotor networks are less well understood than those of many sensory systems, where in-growing axon terminals form a central map of peripheral characteristics. Using the neuromuscular system of the Drosophila embryo as a model and retrograde tracing and genetic methods, we have uncovered principles underlying the organisation of the motor system. We find that dendritic arbors of motor neurons, rather than their cell bodies, are partitioned into domains to form a myotopic map, which represents centrally the distribution of body wall muscles peripherally. While muscles are segmental, the myotopic map is parasegmental in organisation. It forms …

Psychological Factors Associated With Skin Cancer Detection Behaviors In Individuals With A Family History Of Melanoma, Lora M. Azzarello Nov 2003

Psychological Factors Associated With Skin Cancer Detection Behaviors In Individuals With A Family History Of Melanoma, Lora M. Azzarello

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Current ACS guidelines recommend routine screening for cancer (ACS, 2002). Motivation to adhere to guidelines may be different for individuals with and without a family history of melanoma (Jonna, et al., 1998). Prior research examining the relationship between family history and skin cancer detection behaviors (Berwick et al., 1996; Friedman et al., 1993; Oliveria et al., 1999) have failed to utilize a theoretical framework to derive hypotheses. The purpose of the present study was to examine the utility of Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) in explaining intentions to engage in skin cancer screening (SCS) and skin self-examination (SSE). In addition, the …

Radiation Induced Degradation Pathways For Poly (Methyl Methacrylate) And Polystyrene Polymers As Models For Polymer Behavior In Space Environments, Kenneth Henry Heffner Nov 2003

Radiation Induced Degradation Pathways For Poly (Methyl Methacrylate) And Polystyrene Polymers As Models For Polymer Behavior In Space Environments, Kenneth Henry Heffner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Modeling methods are required for predicting the chemical stability of macromolecular materials used in critical spacecraft components of satellites orbiting in the high-energy radiation environment of near earth and deep space planetary magnetic belts. Methods for establishing degradation mechanisms and predicting and simulating the total absorbed dose and ionization for long term space missions are presented herein. This investigation evaluates cross-linking, main-chain scission and elimination products in a linear series of narrowly dispersed poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) polymers. A comparison is made of the scission radiation yield (Gs) and crosslinking (Gx) predicted for the …
