Continuous Hyperspectral Absorption Measurements Of Colored Dissolved Organic Material In Aquatic Systems, Gary J. Kirkpatrick, Cristina Orrico, Mark A. Moline, Matthew Oliver, Oscar M. Schofield
Biological Sciences
The majority of organic carbon in the oceans is present as dissolved organic matter (DOM); therefore understanding the distribution and dynamics of DOM is central to understanding global carbon cycles. Describing the time-space variability in colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) has been difficult, as standard spectrophotometric methods for CDOM determination are laborious and susceptible to methodological biases. Previously, measurements of CDOM absorption in discrete water samples by use of a liquid-waveguide capillary cell (LWCC) compared favorably with measurements made with a benchtop spectrophotometer. Given this, we focused on automating the LWCC technique to improve our spatial and temporal sampling capabilities …

Riser Design For Green Sand And Ductile Iron Castings, K. Michael Kuebler
Riser Design For Green Sand And Ductile Iron Castings, K. Michael Kuebler
Graduate Research Papers
Shrinkage defects in ductile iron riser contacts has long been one of the most frustrating defects to eliminate for the foundry engineer. While process variation can definitively contribute to the occurrence of these defects most can be prevented if the risers are properly designed and/or applied to the castings to be fed. There are several proven methods for the designing risers some of which go back over 40 years ago. There are also new methods available today with the advancements of simulation software. Four of these riser design methods were evaluated for their ability to produce an internally sound casting …
A Presolar Galactic Merger Spawned The Sic-Grain Mainstream, Donald D. Clayton
A Presolar Galactic Merger Spawned The Sic-Grain Mainstream, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
The merger of a metal-poor satellite galaxy with the Milky Way about 5–6 Gyr ago is postulated to resolve three great unexplained conflicts presented by mainstream presolar stardust SiC grains. The model allows all of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) carbon stars that donated these grains to have been formed nearly simultaneously in a starburst generated by gaseous mixing, despite their great apparent age differences when evaluated in terms of Galactic chemical evolution (GCE). The model explains why a precisely measured lin-ear correlation exists between the ratios 29Si/28Si and 30Si/28Si in the initial compositions of those AGB stars. It suggests …

Twin-Rainbow Metrology. I. Measurement Of The Thickness Of A Thin Liquid Film Draining Under Gravity, Charles L. Adler, James A. Lock, Ian P. Rafferty, Wayne Hickok
Physics Faculty Publications
We describe twin-rainbow metrology, a new optical technique used to measure the thickness of thin films in a cylindrical geometry. We also present an application of the technique: measurement of the thickness of a Newtonian fluid draining under gravity. We compare these measurements with fluid mechanics models.
