Incommensurate Spin Density Waves In Iron Aluminides, D. R. Noakes, A. S. Arrott, M. G. Belk, S. C. Deevi Nov 2003

Incommensurate Spin Density Waves In Iron Aluminides, D. R. Noakes, A. S. Arrott, M. G. Belk, S. C. Deevi

Dartmouth Scholarship

Neutron diffraction in Fe(Al) reveals incommensurate spin density waves (SDWs) in alloys known to be spin glasses. The wave vectors for crystals of Fe(34Al), Fe(40Al), and Fe(43Al) show n varying from 11 to 6 for →q=2π(h±1/n,k±1/n,l±1/n)/a0, where (h,k,l) and a0 characterize the parent bcc lattice of the CsCl structure. The magnetic reflections are present far above the spin-glass freezing temperatures. These SDWs keep the spins on nearest-neighbor Fe atoms close to parallel, in contrast with SDWs in Cr, which keep nearest-neighbor spins close to antiparallel.

Src Phosphorylates Cas On Tyrosine 253 To Promote Migration Of Transformed Cells, Gary S. Goldberg, David B. Alexander, Patricia Pellicena, Zhong Yin Zhang, Hiroyuki Tsuda, W. Todd Miller

ETSU Faculty Works

Cas is a member of the focal adhesion complex. Phosphorylation of Cas by Src is an important event leading to cell transformation. Using mass spectrometry, we have mapped 11 sites in Cas that are phosphorylated by Src. These sites are all located between residues 132 and 414 of Cas, in a region that is required for binding to a number of other proteins including Crk. We tested synthetic peptides modeled on Cas phosphorylation sites, and found that the sequence containing tyrosine 253 was phosphorylated by Src most efficiently. Using cells derived from Cas-deficient mice, we confirmed that Cas greatly enhanced …

Examining The Post September 11, 2001 Practices Of Accredited And Non-Accredited Law Enforcement Agencies In The Aspects Of Training, Legal And Service Delivery, Eugene G. Savage Nov 2003

Examining The Post September 11, 2001 Practices Of Accredited And Non-Accredited Law Enforcement Agencies In The Aspects Of Training, Legal And Service Delivery, Eugene G. Savage

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Homeland security measures and the preparation of local law enforcement are reviewed, in light of September 11, 2001, to determine their effect on the Constitutional rights of citizens, the delivery of law enforcement services, e.g., call response and the training methodologies, and the fiscal impact to fulfill the new policing mandates. The study reviews aggressive measures, normally vested with federal law enforcement agencies, to determine if local police are also utilizing similar methods for the sake of national security and if such measures are undermining ethical and legal practices previously exercised by local police. This research also examines the distinction …

Frequency Distributions Of Escherichia Coli Subtypes In Various Fecal Sources Over Time And Geographical Space: Application To Bacterial Source Tracking Methods, Matthew A. Anderson Nov 2003

Frequency Distributions Of Escherichia Coli Subtypes In Various Fecal Sources Over Time And Geographical Space: Application To Bacterial Source Tracking Methods, Matthew A. Anderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Bacterial source tracking (BST) methods often involve the use of phenotypic or genotypic fingerprinting techniques to compare indicator bacteria such as Escherichia coli isolated from unknown sources against a library of fingerprints from indicator bacteria found in the feces of various known source animals. The predictive capability of a library is based in part on how well the library isolates reflect the true population diversity of indicator bacteria that can potentially impact a water body. The purpose of this study was to compare the behavior of E. coli population structures in the feces of humans, beef cattle and horses across …
