An Alternative Mechanism For The Dimerization Of Formic Acid, Nicole R. Brinkmann, Gregory S. Tschumper, Ge Yan, Henry F. Schaefer Nov 2003

An Alternative Mechanism For The Dimerization Of Formic Acid, Nicole R. Brinkmann, Gregory S. Tschumper, Ge Yan, Henry F. Schaefer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Gas-phase formic acid exists primarily as a cyclic dimer. The mechanism of dimerization has been traditionally considered to be a synchronous process; however, recent experimental findings suggest a possible alternative mechanism by which two formic acid monomers proceed through an acyclic dimer to the cyclic dimer in a stepwise process. To investigate this newly proposed process of dimerization in formic acid, density functional theory and second-order Møller - Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) have been used to optimize cis and trans monomers of formic acid, the acyclic and cyclic dimers, and the acyclic and cyclic transition states between minima. Single-point energies …

Trust Law, Corporate Law, And Capital Market Efficiency, Robert H. Sitkoff Nov 2003

Trust Law, Corporate Law, And Capital Market Efficiency, Robert H. Sitkoff

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

In both the publicly-traded corporation and the private donative trust a crucial task is to minimize the agency costs that arise from the separation of risk-bearing and management. But where the law of corporate governance evolved in the shadow of capital-market checks on agency costs, trust governance did not. Thus, even more than that of close corporations, the law and study of private trusts offers an illuminating counterfactual -- a control, as it were - for a playful thought experiment about the importance of capital market efficiency to the law and study of public corporations. The animating idea for this …

Unified Cross-Validation Methodology For Selection Among Estimators And A General Cross-Validated Adaptive Epsilon-Net Estimator: Finite Sample Oracle Inequalities And Examples, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Sandrine Dudoit Nov 2003

Unified Cross-Validation Methodology For Selection Among Estimators And A General Cross-Validated Adaptive Epsilon-Net Estimator: Finite Sample Oracle Inequalities And Examples, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Sandrine Dudoit

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In Part I of this article we propose a general cross-validation criterian for selecting among a collection of estimators of a particular parameter of interest based on n i.i.d. observations. It is assumed that the parameter of interest minimizes the expectation (w.r.t. to the distribution of the observed data structure) of a particular loss function of a candidate parameter value and the observed data structure, possibly indexed by a nuisance parameter. The proposed cross-validation criterian is defined as the empirical mean over the validation sample of the loss function at the parameter estimate based on the training sample, averaged over …

Extended Hough Methodology For 3d Feature Detection, Rufus H. Cofer, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Jihun Cha Nov 2003

Extended Hough Methodology For 3d Feature Detection, Rufus H. Cofer, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Jihun Cha

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

In an effort to make automatically detect image features for pattern recognition, we described a 3-dimensional (3-D) Hough transform. We describe two interlocking theoretical extensions to greatly enhance the Hough transform's ability to handle finite lineal features and allow directed search for various features while balancing memory and computational complexity. We computed the 2-D Hough transform of 1-D slices of an image which results in a 2-D to 3-D transform. Features such as line segments will cluster in a particular location so that both line orientation and spatial extent can be determined. This approach allows the Hough transform to be …

Local-Field Factors In A Polarized Two-Dimensional Electron Gas, Juana Moreno, C. Marinescu Nov 2003

Local-Field Factors In A Polarized Two-Dimensional Electron Gas, Juana Moreno, C. Marinescu

Faculty Publications

We derive approximate expressions for the static local-field factors of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas that smoothly interpolate between their small- and large-wave-vector asymptotic limits. The proposed analytical expressions reproduce recent diffusion Monte Carlo data for the unpolarized and fully polarized electron gas. We find that the degree of spin polarization produces important modifications to the local factors of the minority spins, while the local-field functions of the majority spins are less affected. © 2003 The American Physical Society.

Modeling The Transient Response Of A Thermosyphon, James Kirk Storey Nov 2003

Modeling The Transient Response Of A Thermosyphon, James Kirk Storey

Theses and Dissertations

Thermosyphon transient operation was numerically modeled. The numerical model presented in this work overcame the limitations of previous studies by including transient conduction in the vessel wall, shear stress between the rising vapor and the falling film in the thermosyphon, the influence of the mass in the liquid pool in the evaporator, and by using a more refined and accurate numerical grid. Unique to this model was the accounting for temporal changes in the effective length of the vapor space due to the expanding and contracting of non-condensable gases in the vapor space. The model assumed quasi-steady one-dimensional vapor flow, …

Lights, Camera, Lawsuit, A. J. Bedel

Duke Law & Technology Review

As the speed of Internet access improves, the film industry will need to explore its options for eliminating the downloading of digital movie files. After examining the successes and failures of the music industry in its battle with peer-to-peer networks, the film industry has begun to follow its predecessor. However, the nature of film as an entertainment medium is quite different than that of music. As a result, the film industry could implement creative solutions to this problem that would not have been available to the music industry. A recent study shows that most films available on the Internet have …

Larger Issues At Stake In Unnatural Sex Debate, Seow Hon Tan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The recent debate about the criminal prohibition of oral sex provides an occasion for considering larger, related issues. However prevalent the practice of oral sex and however archaic Section 377 of the Penal Code seems to those pushing for its repeal, the arguments offered have tended to take a piecemeal approach and display an ignorance of or disregard for the larger interests at stake.

Efficient Grazing Systems: Putting Pieces Together, Charles T. Dougherty Nov 2003

Efficient Grazing Systems: Putting Pieces Together, Charles T. Dougherty

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Pros and cons of grazing systems are well-known to this audience. Efficient grazing systems, however, are a different story. What is an efficient grazing system? I think we could argue that topic until the cows come home and I do not believe we could come to any agreement. I am going to approach the subject of efficiency from several angles but you will probably see them differently. Economic efficiencies will not be covered.
