Pumpkin varieties and experimental lines were evaluated at the Kurtz Farm in Allen County, Indiana. Twenty-two jack-o-lantern types, 4 pie types, and 4 mini-pumpkins were included in the trial. Yield and fruit characteristics are reported.

Power consumption has become one major challenge in designing highperformance servers. Recently, some researchers postulate that better energy e±ciency can be achieved by using low power devices originally designed for mobile embedded systems. In this report, we validate this hypothesis by measuring the power and the performance of web servers on system level. We consider the power and the energy consumption of processors, memory, and hard disk drives. Our data indicate that, compared with a Pentium4-based web server, a XScale-based computer can achieve more than 1.7 times higher energy e±ciency (web pages per Joule) while its throughput (web pages per …

Piezoelectric fans are very low power, small, very low noise, solid-state devices that have recently emerged as viable thermal management solutions for a variety of portable electronics applications including laptop computers, cellular phones and wearable computers. Piezoelectric fans utilize piezoceramic patches bonded onto thin, low frequency flexible blades to drive the fan at its resonance frequency. The resonating, low frequency blade creates a streaming airflow directed at key electronics components. The optimization of a piezoelectric fan with two symmetrically placed piezoelectric patches is investigated through an analytical Bernoulli-Euler model as well as a finite element (FE) model of the composite …

A buffer overflow attack is perhaps the most common attack used to compromise the security of a host. A buffer overflow can be used to change the function return address and redirect execution to execute the attacker's code. We present a hardware-based solution, called SmashGuard, to protecting the return addresses stored on the program stack. SmashGuard protects against all known forms of attack on the function return address pointer. With each function call instruction a new return address is pushed onto an extra hardware stack. A return instruction compares its return address to the address from the top of the …

On Improving Recursive Bipartitioning-Based Placement, Chen Li, Cheng-Kok Koh

We present an improved partitioning-based placement tool in terms of the half-perimeter wirelength. In contrast to placement tools that exploit white spaces to reduce the routing congestion, our placement tool exploits white spaces to reduce the total wirelength. In particular, we generate white spaces during the legalization step and treat white spaces as pseudo cells during the detailed placement step. On IBM benchmarks, our results are better than those of Feng Shui [1] and Capo [4] by 1.8% and 11.1%, respectively, on the average. Our results are comparable to those of Dragon [17]. Israeli Coalition Governments: Formation And Duration (1949-1999), Imad Salamey

This doctoral dissertation identifies key aspects that have contributed to the formation and duration of Israeli coalition governments. Most importantly, it differentiates between two historical periods that have shaped Israeli coalition politics. Prior to the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and the election of the 7th Israeli Knesset in 1969, Israeli political parties formed consensual and inclusive coalitions in response to economic, immigration, and external pressures. Low levels of party competition and the dominance of Mapai in the Israeli Knessets further contributed to the formation of large alliances. Post-1969, following the gradual decline of Labor’s electoral dominance, Israeli parties became further polarized …

Conservation biology requires the development of practical tools and techniques to minimize conflicts arising from human modification of ecosystems. We applied behavioral theory of primary and secondary repellents to predator management by using aversive stimulus devices (electronic training collars) and disruptive stimulus devices (behavior-contingent audio and visual repellents) in a multipredator (Canis lupus, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, Ursus spp. ) study in the United States. We examined fladry and a newly developed disruptive stimulus device contingent upon behavior on six wolf territories in Wisconsin, (US.A.) and determined that the disruptive stimulus device gave the greatest degree of protection from predation.
