Most female birds have only a left ovary and associated oviduct. The entry to the oviduct is on the left side of the urodeum of the cloaca. This arrangement may favor males that mount females from the left during copulation if it results in sperm being placed closer to the opening of the oviduct. Therefore, we predicted a left-sided directional bias of cloacal contacts during House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) copulations. Cloacal contacts from the left outnumbered those from the right 74 to 25 (3:1) during 25 bouts of copulation at 11 House Sparrow nests. While this pattern suggests …

Coatings of nickel with and without silicon carbide nano-particles were carried out on 2024-T3 aluminum alloy by the electrochemical process. The size of the silicon carbide particles was less than 50nm. Nickel coatings were done using a nickel sulfamate bath maintained at a constant temperature of 50° ± 5° C. Tensile specimens were prepared and studied to determine the Young's modulus of bare aluminum, with nickel coatings and with composite nickel and silicon carbide coatings. In this study, Landsat imagery from June (summer) and October (autumn senescence) 2000 of the area of Fort Custer Training Center in Kalamazoo and Calhoun Counties, Michigan, were analyzed for forest classification accuracies. The use of fractal analysis to improve forest classification, particularly to distinguish among northern hardwood species, was examined. Using moving windows with different sizes, measurement of local fractal dimension and spatial autocorrelation (Moran's I) were performed on the NDVIs and the panchromatic images. Non-stoichiometric samples of the AB₅ system defined by the formula La_1-yNi_5+2y and LaNi_5+2xGa_1-x were cast using an arc-melting furnace. The samples were then analyzed to determine their lattice parameters and phases present using XRD. They were then heat-treated to produce homogeneous compounds and quenched with the intention of retaining high temperature compositions. Following the heat-treatment, the alloys underwent XRD again as well as SEM/EDS. The XRD information was analyzed using Rietveld refinement and the elemental data derived from the EDS was used to ascertain the compositions were statistically akin to the weighed values. …

A Comparative Study Of Photomultiplier Tubes And Charge Coupled Devices In Glow Discharge-Optical Emission Spectrometry, Robert James Broadwater

This Masters Thesis compared two glow discharge-optical emission spectrometers designed around two different types of detectors: the photomultiplier tube (PMT) and the charge-coupled device (CCD). The two instruments compared were the LECO SA2000 (PMT-based) and the LECO GDS500a (CCD-based). Detection limit, dynamic range, precision, accuracy, and drift were determined to compare the detection systems between 165 and 450nm.

The PMT-based system outperformed the CCD-based system in all five of the categories studied based on the initial protocol. However, it was shown that improvements could be made in four of the five categories studied by exploiting the CCDs ability to monitor …

It has been proposed that placing a geotextile over sediments with adsorbed contaminants can prevent bioaccumulation of the contaminants in larger animals by isolating the benthic organisms living within these sediments from fish. In conjunction with a field study carried out at Gull Creek, a laboratory study testing two geotextiles as biointrusion barriers and sediment filters was conducted.

Frequently used components of OBM interventions include feedback, goal setting, and consequences. Literature on various combinations of these components is abundant but there are few reports of their use in the hospital setting. Hydroxyl free radicals are biologically important molecules in that they attack proteins, lipids and DNA to obtain an electron to fill their outer valence shell. The consequences of such attacks include protein degradation, lipid peroxidation and DNA damage, which leads to many diseases and cancer. While there are many antioxidant assays available to predict anti-radical properties of compounds against different free radicals, the assessment of hydroxyl radical damage has been challenging. The cases discussed primarily fall within five categories: (1) contract; (2) tort; (3) mechanic's and materialman's liens; (4) workers' compensation; and (5) arbitration. The Article also includes a miscellaneous section covering noteworthy cases that do not fit neatly into the sections enumerated above.

In reading over 900 cases in criminal law and criminal procedure during the survey period, the fact that courts find the time to carefully analyze the allegations of error in each case is striking. The difference in the quality of the courts' work is especially striking when compared to the courts of twenty years ago.

Several themes emerge after reading these cases. The first theme is the number of specious arguments raised on appeal. This is due, in large part, to the Georgia Supreme Court's opinion in Huguley v. State in which the court disapproved Anders motions and forced attorneys …

Fourteen of the domestic relations appellate cases decided during the survey period' are digested here. Georgia law requires that appeals of domestic relations cases occur through the discretionary application process. A party wanting to appeal an order in a domestic relations case must first file an application to obtain the appropriate appellate court's permission to file an appeal. As part of a pilot project, the Georgia Supreme Court announced it would accept all "non-frivolous" applications filed in domestic relations cases during the calendar year 2003. Between June 1, 2002, and June 1, 2003, the Georgia Court of Appeals and the Georgia Supreme Court decided over two hundred cases concerning legal ethics. Those cases included disciplinary cases against lawyers, bar admission matters, claims of ineffective assistance of counsel in criminal cases, judicial discipline and disqualification, and several miscellaneous matters involving clients and lawyers. In addition, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit decided one significant case involving judicial elections in Georgia.

After an attorney's bill of more than $600 for February, the town council passed a law Tuesday that limits the ability of the mayor and city clerk to call the attorney. The mayor and clerk were criticized for contacting the town attorney to answer what one council member called "useless questions . . . ." The solution was a new town law requiring that if the mayor, council member, or clerk need to discuss a town issue with the attorney, the mayor and at least three council members must approve the question before the call.

Extra-contractual issues continue to percolate in the insurance arena. The Georgia Supreme Court resettled the law enforcing contractual suit limitations and created a "safe harbor" for an insurer faced with demands conditioned on terms beyond an insurer's control. The Supreme Court of the United States, in reversing a nine-digit punitive award, laid down "bright-line," conservative rules regulating punitive considerations in extra-contractual and other situations.

This Comment discusses the issues and confusion regarding regulatory takings and the proper test for establishing a regulatory taking. The author starts by discussing the traditional ad hoc factors used to determine whether a taking had occurred.
