The dilemma facing all foundries today is finding a cost effective, efficient, and safe manner in which to clean castings. At the same time produce a cleaned casting that meets consistent quality and delivery expectations. Today nearly 90% of all casting produced are cleaned by the use of manual labor via chipping an grinding. This manual method has proved to be very labor intensive, costly, lacking consistent quality, and carry high rates of injuries. Between the summer of 1862 and the fall of 1863, tens of thousands of Confederate soldiers camped upon the hills and valleys near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Many of those men would write home of the sites and events they experienced. What follows are several letters that were recently found in the Auburn University archives located in the Ralph Brown Draughon Library.

The relationship between a company and its in-house corporate counsel involves a fragile mixture of the corporate counsel’s fiduciary obligations as the company’s attorney and the company’s legal and contractual responsibilities as the attorney’s employer. Although these roles and expectations often blend smoothly, the relationship can become problematic when the corporate counsel’s position as an attorney conflicts with the counsel’s status as an employee. Put another way, when a company’s expectations as a client are at odds with its responsibilities as an employer, the relationship between the employer-client and the employee-attorney can become strained and expose each to difficulty, if …

The Space Transportation Information Network (STIN) was developed to solve the challenge of managing a geographically disparate NASA program. By its nature, this "enterprise information portal" enhances communication, saves time, and retains expertise as a form-driven knowledge management data base. However, for the Revolutionary Turbine Accelerator Project (RTA) led by the NASA Glenn Research Center, a comprehensive STIN training program, designed specifically for RTA, had never been instituted. To help optimize STIN for this population, a training intervention model was designed and developed to clarify the purpose, policy, and technical usability of STIN. Bacteriolytic Activity Of Selected Vertebrate Sera For Borrelia Burgdorferi Sensu Stricto And Borrelia Bissettii, Amy J. Ullmann, Robert S. Lane, Klaus Kurtenbach, Michael Miller, Martin E. Schriefer, Nordin Zeidner, Joseph Piesman

An in vitro assay to evaluate the bacteriolytic activity of the complement pathway was applied to 2 strains of Borrelia bissettii, CO501 and DN127, and compared with that of B. burgdorferi sensu stricto B31. Sera from mule deer ( Odocoileus hemionus) and the Western Fence lizard ( Sceloporus occidentalis) were completely borreliacidal for B. burgdorferi and for both strains of B. bissettii. Serum from Bobwhite quail ( Colinus virginianus) was nonlytic for B. burgdorferi and partially lytic for B. bissettii strains, CO-501 and DN127. Under the Medicare+Choice program, firms have been able to offer products on a county by county basis, making participation decisions based on factors such as county payment rate, strength of local provider networks, and beneficiary's affinity for managed care. In 2003, Medicare+Choice payment rates paid to plans range from $495 in rural floor counties to a high of $872 in Staten Island, NY. Consequently, there is large national variation in benefits, premiums, and plan participation. A recent site visit to Palm Beach county and neighboring Miami-Dade highlighted many of the differences between counties which may pose challenges to firms trying …

High rates of untreated mental illness cause serious health problems in the United States and worldwide. The use of computer-administered therapy has the potential to increase access to mental health care for certain patient populations. An online version of an alcohol check-up was developed that guided subjects through a series of standardized questionnaires, and provided them with feedback designed to enhance their appreciation of the negative aspects of their alcohol use. Ratings of the helpfulness of the questionnaires were evaluated in order to determine the characteristics of individuals who would potentially benefit from an automated substance abuse intervention, and to …

Master's Theses - Sociology and Anthropology

Through in-depth qualitative interviews with five current or former members of a midwestern National Organization for Women (NOW) chapter, this thesis explores four related research questions regarding: growth of feminist consciousness; how feminist ideology affects the evolution of social networks, and vice versa; the impact of intersecting social hierarchies; and feminism as a force for bonding and bridging social capital in the local community context. Analytical tools include feminist methodology, the articulation model, an understanding of intersecting social hierarchies, and grounded theory.

Toyota again topped the annual J. D. Power and Associates quality study released in late May of 2002. Toyota scored the highest mark ever with l 07 defects per l 00 vehicles, while Honda came in second with 113 defects. The study was based on responses of approximately 65,000 new car owners queried during their first 90-days of ownership.

These results do not surprise us, as we have been fortunate to make numerous sojourns to the Toyota plant in Georgetown, Kentucky, and observe the manufacturing processes. These trips were normally facilitated by a former Japanese student of ours, Minako Yanke, …

This Article examines the major cases decided and legislation enacted during the period from June 1, 2002 through May 31, 2003. The cases and statutes discussed cover the substantive law relating to decedents' estates, trusts, and guardianships, and to the fiduciaries who administer these entities. The cases also explore procedural rules that apply in litigation arising from the creation and ongoing administration of these legal relationships.
