Essays in Education
While there are many influences that shape how schools are structured one that has been largely ignored is the influence of militarism. Militarism refers to a set of values or ideologies that include hierarchical relationships and domination. This piece discusses the ways that schools are militaristic, including their authority, physical, academic, and athletic structures, the processes used by administrators and in classrooms, and the curriculums taught.

This Article will first briefly discuss the Posse Comitatus Act and its applicability in different situations, the exceptions to the PCA, and the use of DOD military services in counter-drug operations. A Command and Control (C2) problem for Military Air Operations is addressed. Specifically, we consider C2 problems for air vehicles against ground based targets and defensive systems. The problem is viewed as a stochastic game. In this paper, we restrict our attention to the C2 level where the problem may consist of a few UCAVs or aircraft (or possibly teams of vehicles); less than say, a half-dozen enemy SAMs; a few enemy assets (viewed as targets from our standpoint); and some enemy decoys (assumed to mimic SAM radar signatures). Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) are among the most lethal biological substances to have been weaponized and are listed as biodefense category A agents. Currently, no small molecule (non-peptidic) therapeutics exist to counter this threat; hence, identifying and developing compounds that inhibit BoNTs is a high priority. In the present study, a high-throughput assay was used to identify small molecules that inhibit the metalloprotease activity of BoNT serotype A light chain (BoNT/A LC). All inhibitors were further verified using a HPLC-based assay. Conformational analyses of these compounds, in conjunction with molecular docking studies, were used to predict structural features that contribute to …

Missile Longitudinal Autopilot Design Using A New Suboptimal Nonlinear Control Method, Ming Xin, S. N. Balakrishnan

A missile longitudinal autopilot is designed using a new nonlinear control synthesis technique called the θ-D approximation. The particular θ-D methodology used is referred to as the θ-D H2 design. The technique can achieve suboptimal closed-form solutions to a class of nonlinear optimal control problems in the sense that it solves the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation approximately by adding perturbations to the cost function. An interesting feature of this method is that the expansion terms in the expression for suboptimal control are nothing but solutions to the state-dependent Riccati equations associated with this class of problems. Recently, there has been increasing use of the tool of justice/accountability in the peace-building process. Yet, the norms of justice, while increasingly invoked, is seldom defined in the context of peace-building. To understand the role that justice has played and has the potential of playing in the peace-building process, it is important first to define the norm as well as articulate its functions. Morocco’s King Hassan II died on 23 July 1999 and was succeeded by his son Muhammad VI. Much of the media coverage of Hassan II following his death portrayed him as a champion of democracy and human rights in the region. Was this really the case? Was Morocco under Hassan II becoming a more democratic and open society? This paper critically examines King Hassan’s legacy, challenges and opportunities it poses for his heir Muhammad VI. The paper also discusses Morocco’s prospects for democratic deepening under the new leader.
