This document is a summary of the process followed in implementing a community-based education program in Burkina Faso. The Population Council initiated a collaboration between two NGOs, Tostan in Senegal and Mwangaza Action in Burkina Faso, to replicate the program for improving women’s reproductive health and contributing to the end of female genital cutting (FGC). In Burkina Faso, the participants (men and women) held discussions to analyze the problems faced by their communities and to find appropriate solutions. Many positive changes occurred in the participating villages: the communities now promote reproductive health and human rights and work to improve public …

The use of dogs for mine detection has expanded dramatically in the last ten years. However, research designed to explore and understand the issues underlying mine dog detection has not kept pace with that expansion. A poor knowledge base was recognised as a key limitation on further development and exploitation of this fascinating detection technology. The GICHD therefore accepted the challenge of initiating a programme of research on mine detection dogs, with the specific objectives of (1) improving understanding of the skills and limitations of dogs, (2) optimising their deployment and performance, and (3) raising confidence in their work.

This research examines the attitudes of middle school students towards their peers with disabilities. The opportunity for students with disabilities to participate in inclusive education in Western Australia has increased steadily in recent years. The impact of inclusion on stakeholders within the education arena is, therefore, an important area of research. As part of this increased demand for inclusive education a trial inclusion program was set-up at a middle school in regional Western Australian. This essay sketches out the complications of a performative pedagogy in the context of a basic communication course, specifically examining how the course negotiates and constitutes what communication scholars have called "educational risk." To do this, a collage of narratives are provided--a series of images which, when seen in totality, might generate a conversation about how communication studies could address the intersections of risk, critical performative pedagogy, and the classrooms of our basic communication courses. Americans love to complain about the jury. They complain about being called for jury duty. They complain about jury verdicts in highly publicized cases. They are outraged by the failure to convict "obviously guilty" criminals, such as the police officers in the cases of Rodney King and Amadou Diallo, the Menendez brothers in their first trial, and of course O.J. Simpson. In civil cases, they are appalled when plaintiffs win huge damage awards in "obviously frivolous" lawsuits. The process for producing Pterodactyls (Nov. 2001) started one and a half years prior to an audience member even contemplating stepping into the Robinson Theatre to see a production of a play by the award-winning playwright Nicky Silver. I knew for a long time that I wanted to direct a play, but Pterodactyls was not always my choice. Initially, I had thought of doing Christopher Durang's, Beyond Therapy, but a simple reading of a monologue changed all that.
