Literature Response Journals : Successful Implementation In A Balanced Literacy Program, Michelle Heiserman
Literature Response Journals : Successful Implementation In A Balanced Literacy Program, Michelle Heiserman
Graduate Research Papers
When balancing their literacy program, classroom teachers take into consideration many components of reading. They know that they must look at each student to see where his or her strengths and weaknesses are. They then plan instruction based on this assessment. One way is to teach how to respond to literature, which is a valuable way to reflect and clarify while reading. It allows the students to work at their own level and become engaged in literature. The literature response journal can be used in conjunction with any literacy program. It provides a way for the teacher and student to …
It's A Small World After All: Proposed Solutions For Global Antitrust In A System Of National Laws, Jennifer R. Johnson
It's A Small World After All: Proposed Solutions For Global Antitrust In A System Of National Laws, Jennifer R. Johnson
Santa Clara Journal of International Law
As business continues to expand on a multinational level, global business organizations increasingly need antitrust laws that transcend national borders while States increasingly seek to apply their domestic antitrust laws to companies that affect their domestic market. This article presents the issues raised by the application of domestic laws in an international context through the lens of the United States and European Union. The article first reviews the statutory basis for the antitrust laws in both the U.S. and the E.U. and then discusses the extraterritorial application of domestic laws by both entities. The author illustrates the difficulties that arise …

On March 15, 1939, Germany, also known as The Third Reich, invaded Czechoslovakia in what has historically been recognized as a precipitating event leading to the beginning of World War II. The Third Reich, as the aggressor, expanded its efforts from Germany to remove all Jewish People and Jewish influences from Europe. In order to accomplish this objective, the Third Reich built concentration camps as containment centers for the Jewish people. These containment camps were extermination centers with locations at: Treblinka, Belzec, Auschwitz-Birkenau, Wülzburg, Sobibor and other locations. Another of these containment centers was Theresienstadt, which was converted into a …

From Bucktown To Niketown: Doing Visual Cultural Studies (Chicago Style), Kevin Tavin, Lea Lovelace, Albert Stabler, Jason Maxam
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
We begin this article with an epigrammatic manifesto: Art education should be a political project that engages visual representations, cultural sites, and public spheres through the language of critique, possibility, and production. Art educators should help students understand, critique, and challenge how individuals, institutions, and social practices are inscribed in power differently, to expand the possibilities for freedom, equality, and radical democracy, through relevant and meaningful production. These are the elements and principles of a politically engaged and socially just art education. This is art education as visual cultural studies.

Us Nuclear Security Cooperation With Russia And Transparency, David W. Hafemeister
Us Nuclear Security Cooperation With Russia And Transparency, David W. Hafemeister
Physics
This chapter reviews the efforts of Russia and the United States to conclude agreements on the control or reduction of their inventories of nuclear warheads and military fissile materials. While some of the negotiations attempted to codify arms limitation and reduction measures, others were aimed at constraining the spread of fissile materials and technologies to the non-nuclear weapon states (NNWS). A number of the negotiations had elements of both arms control and non-proliferation.
Most of the monitoring provisions contained in nuclear agreements between Russia and the USA are in the category of transparency measures—those that give confidence that a …

A Practical Guide Using A Variety Of Instructional Methods For Teaching Reading To Gifted Students, Melissa Caveness
A Practical Guide Using A Variety Of Instructional Methods For Teaching Reading To Gifted Students, Melissa Caveness
All Graduate Projects
Gifted students spend most of their school day, if not all, learning in the regular classroom. Often, this environment is not conducive to their learning needs, and there is a lack of readily available supplemental materials that teachers can use to meet the needs of the gifted students. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to create a handbook that provides different strategies for teachers to use when teaching gifted students in the regular classroom. The project contains five thematic units that incorporate and utilize literature and comprehension strategies. This project first focuses definitions and identifiers of gifted students academically …

The Law Of Obscenity - Or Absurdity, H. Franklin Robbins Jr., Steven G. Mason
The Law Of Obscenity - Or Absurdity, H. Franklin Robbins Jr., Steven G. Mason
St. Thomas Law Review
At any rate, if the First Amendment only protects expression that the majority believes will promote the right values, it does not protect very much. Sexually explicit materials arouse intense, deep-seated feelings, and from a moral point of view, the desire to stop their dissemination is understandable. But the censoring of morally bad ideas is glaringly incompatible with the most basic principles of First Amendment law. Nonetheless, for nearly two hundred years the censorship of morally offensive materials has been a part of our legal history, notwithstanding the absolute terms of the First Amendment.
Lawyers As Prophets, Thomas L. Shaffer
Lawyers As Prophets, Thomas L. Shaffer
St. Thomas Law Review
Legal ethics is about injustice. My effort here is part of the broad, modern academic enterprise, and of the broad, modern professional enterprise now usually called professional responsibility. Both date from the Watergate scandal in the administration of President Richard M. Nixon, and the rejection, by legal academics and practicing lawyers, of the behavior of the President and other lawyers in that affair. Our modern enterprise, like the biblical Exodus, was born in outrage at the abuse of legal power. In university law schools such as this one, legal ethics is now a discipline characterized by schools of thought on …
