A Fourth Grade Balanced Literacy Curriculum, Melissa Daly Jan 2003

A Fourth Grade Balanced Literacy Curriculum, Melissa Daly

Honors Capstones

Children come from all different socioeconomic backgrounds, past educational experiences, and levels of parental involvement. Each and every child will be at a unique literacy level with differences spanning in reading comprehension, word analysis, use of reading strategies, written communication, and other key areas. Education tends to follow "hot topics" and trends of research, but a balanced reading approach to literacy will continue to be vital in reaching the spectrum of students. Research was conducted through both a literary review of educational resources and a sixteen week student teaching experience to construct four individual units for use in a fourth …

Double Victims: Fictional Representatives Of Women In The Holocaust, Shauna Copeland Jan 2003

Double Victims: Fictional Representatives Of Women In The Holocaust, Shauna Copeland

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Traditional Holocaust studies have largely overlooked women's unique voices, instead treating the eloquent and moving narratives of such renowned authors as Elie Wiesel and Tadeusz Borowski as definitive sources on "the" Holocaust experience. Recently, scholars have addressed the absence of women's voices in Holocaust studies, arguing that women's experiences, and their reactions to those experiences, were in fact very different from those of men. This topic is a controversial one, and some scholars argue that women's suffering should not be focused upon in the context of an event that sentenced all Jews to death. With such controversy surrounding this issue, …

Women And Oaths In Euripides, Judith Fletcher Jan 2003

Women And Oaths In Euripides, Judith Fletcher

Ancient Studies Faculty Publications

“The oath is what holds democracy together,” claimed the Athenian orator Lycurgus, whose democracy was composed exclusively of men.1 Athens was the definitive phallogocentric community where public discursive practices such as the oath were the prerogative of male citizens who competed for power in the agora, the assembly, and the lawcourts. Euripides, however, represents the disquieting occurrence of women tendering oaths for men, a phenomenon that challenges the gendered hierarchy of his society.2 In this article I explore how three Euripidean dramas, Medea, Hippolytus, and Ipigenia in Tauris, allow women to use these potent speech …

Vigorous Debate And Rigorous Inquiry, Alisa Solomon

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

Our newsletter goes to press on the eve of President Bush's State of the Union address, in which he is expected to argue for going to war against Iraq. By the time this newsletter reaches you, the war may already have started. It's a frightening moment, to say the least. Meanwhile free speech and civil liberties are being curtailed in the name of security and scholars and researchers have special reasons to be wary: Archives are shutting off access; the Freedom of Information Act is being gutted; new laws are demanding that when asked by government officials, librarians must turn …
