Say-Do Correspondence: Effects Of Reinforcer Magnitude, Response Requirement, And Prior Experience On Choices., Stephanie P. Da Silva

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The effects of reinforcer magnitude, response requirement, and prior experience on choices in say-do correspondence were assessed in three experiments. In each of the experiments, correspondence was trained on red, green, and white key colors using Lattal and Doepke's (2001) homologue of correspondence. In Experiment 1, the duration of food presentations following correspondence on each key color was manipulated across conditions. As the duration of food presentation increased (e.g., from 3 s to 6 s), the number of say responses on that key color increased and, as the duration of food presentation decreased (e.g., from 3 s to 1 s), …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study is to determine the associations of recreation and leisure with community satisfaction. The quantity, quality, and social context of participation in recreation and leisure activities are examined as potential predictors of community satisfaction. Questionnaires were distributed to a systematic random sample of residents in Montgomery, West Virginia. Following a multiple stepwise regression analysis, findings indicate that quantity (frequency) of leisure participation and quality (satisfaction) with recreation and leisure are predictors of community satisfaction. Pearsonís Correlation Coefficients indicate that frequency of volunteering and working in the yard are most strongly related with community satisfaction. The results …

The Influence Of Birth Order On Verbal Aggressiveness And Argumentativeness., Marissa F. Rodgers Jan 2003

The Influence Of Birth Order On Verbal Aggressiveness And Argumentativeness., Marissa F. Rodgers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined the influence of birth order on verbal aggressiveness and argumentativeness. Participants were 207 (111 men, 94 women; M age = 19.80) students. Participants completed the Verbal Aggressiveness Scale (Infante & Wigley, 1986) and the Argumentativeness Scale (Infante & Rancer, 1982). Results indicated first-born children reported significantly more argumentativeness than did youngest children. Men reported significantly more verbal aggressiveness and argumentativeness than females. A significant difference did not exist between the verbal aggressiveness of first-born children, only-children, and laterborn children. Future research should compare siblings’ reports of verbal aggressiveness, argumentativeness, and other salient communication behaviors to assess differing …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study was intended to be a replication and extension of Schroeder and Ketrow’s study (1997) of communication apprehension and nonverbal decoding ability, using the Interpersonal Perception Task -15 (Costanzo & Archer, 1993). This study explored specific nonverbal behaviors that are utilized by individuals who report high levels of communication apprehension when making judgments about an interaction. Moreover, the relationship between nonverbal decoding ability and interaction involvement was investigated. Results did not indicate any relationship between individuals’ scores on the IPT-15 and any other variable included in the study. Future research should attempt to develop a more reliable and valid …

An Operant Blocking Account Of Rule-Governed Behavior's Insensitivity To Local Contingencies Of Reinforcement., Marta Leon Jan 2003

An Operant Blocking Account Of Rule-Governed Behavior's Insensitivity To Local Contingencies Of Reinforcement., Marta Leon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This experiment examined whether operant blocking could explain instructed behavior’s insensitivity to contingencies. Fourteen subjects were randomly assigned to three groups and trained to respond to a multiple differential reinforcement of low rates 4- seconds/fixed ratio 18 (DRL 4-s/FR18) schedule. Subjects in the Blocking and Unblocking groups received instructions about the optimal response rate. Subjects in the Minimally Instructed group received only general instructions. Arbitrary stimuli correlated with the schedule components were presented to all groups. For the Unblocking group, the introduction of these stimuli was accompanied by a change in reinforcement’s magnitude. Sensitivity and blocking were assessed by reversing …

A Comparison Of Distraction Strategies For Venipuncture In Young Children., Jill E. Maclaren

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Distraction has been used successfully as an intervention to decrease children’s distress during painful procedures. However, distraction protocols differ in various ways, most notably in the attention required by the participant to engage in the distraction. This study compared two empirically supported distraction strategies that differed in the degree to which they required children’s interaction (interactive toy and cartoon movie) during venipunctures. Standard treatment was used as a control condition. In addition to the examination of treatment effects, exploratory analyses evaluated relations among children’s age, engagement in distraction, and distress. Results indicated that children watching the movie were more distracted …

Ethical And Legal Standards For Research In Prisons, Karen C. Kalmbach, Phillip M. Lyons Jan 2003

Ethical And Legal Standards For Research In Prisons, Karen C. Kalmbach, Phillip M. Lyons

Psychology Faculty Publications (Archived)

Biobehavioral research, especially that which is conducted with prisoners, has become much more closely regulated in the last 30 years. State and federal law, as well as professional standards, regulate the conduct of many types of research; in the case of prisoners, this regulation is even more stringent. However, currently no mandatory, uniform, national regulatory or oversight process exists, and many privately funded research endeavors are operating in a regulatory void. In response to this, the National Bioethics Advisory Commission has argued for the creation of a single, national, independent regulatory body to oversee all human participant research, regardless of …

Prediction Of Treatment Dropouts From Outpatient Substance Abuse Rehabilitation: A Discriminant Analysis., Phyllis J. Harner-Neer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Significant research literature supports the need for programs better designed to meet the needs of adolescent substance treatment. There is little research, however, that addresses the identification of characteristics of those adolescents who do not complete treatment. Consequently, this study seeks to identify those characteristics of adolescents by segueing off of another study that proved successful in identifying characteristics among inpatient adult male substance abusers. This study looks at the archival data of 38 adolescents who attended outpatient substance abuse treatment at an experientially-based, substance abuse program designed for adolescents. Methodological processes included the use of demographic variables collected through …

From Realism To Minimalism And Back Again: A Comparison Of Anton Chekhov And Raymond Carver, Olga Olegovna Cherchesova Jan 2003

From Realism To Minimalism And Back Again: A Comparison Of Anton Chekhov And Raymond Carver, Olga Olegovna Cherchesova

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis involves a comparison of two short story writers: Anton Chekhov and Raymond Carver. Anton Chekhov has been acknowledged as one of the most significant influences upon the American literature; in particular, he had a strong personal and professional influence on Raymond Carver. Examination of these authors' works traces the tradition of literary inheritance and the development of the short story genre itself in the twentieth century. This thesis explores the survival of Chekhovian narrative tradition in American postmodern short story as epitomized in the work of Raymond Carver.

Battering, Forgiveness And Redemption, Brenda V. Smith

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This Article focuses on a topic that, though frequently discussed, has been dismissed in the domestic violence discourse - forgiveness. The author draws upon personal narrative to frame the challenge of forgiveness. The article explores forgiveness - for domestic violence survivors, for batterers, and for communities - through a personal lens and drawing upon mediation, restorative justice and indigenous peace and reconciliation models. The article concludes that exploration and embrace of models that address forgiveness and reconciliation are overdue and would contribute greatly to practice and discourse on domestic violence.

The Role Of Justice In The Former Yugoslavia: Antidote Or Placebo For Coercive Appeasement?, Paul Williams, Patricia Taft Jan 2003

The Role Of Justice In The Former Yugoslavia: Antidote Or Placebo For Coercive Appeasement?, Paul Williams, Patricia Taft

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Throughout the 1990's, the approach of the European Union and the United States to the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia was one of coercive appeasement. By most professional and historical accounts, this approach was a failed one, with the consequences that over 250,000 civilians were killed, thousands raped and millions displaced. Throughout the conflict, the institutions of justice created by the international community frequently served as a mere placebo rather than an antidote to the dominant approach of coercive appeasement. Frequently key policymakers actively sought to constrain the role of justice during the peace building process. At times during the …

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

What forms of innovative collaboration are possible between clergy and psychologists? A total of 117 clergypersons (63% response rate) rated 6 scenarios of collaboration, indicating their level of interest and the extent to which they would like to remain involved with the psychologist. The scenarios were derived from two categories of collaboration articulated by in previous research: mental health services and enhancing parish life. Overall, clergy expressed relatively modest levels of interest in innovative collaboration, though they were somewhat interested in mental health consultation services. Many clergy refer troubled parishioners to clinical or counseling psychologists for treatment, but appear less …

You Have Discussed Lepers And Crooks. Sanism In Clinical Teaching, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

There is a robust clinical literature on how issues of race and gender may influence all aspects of the clinicalsetting: the relationship between student and client, the relationship between student and student, the relationship between student and clinical supervisor, the attitude of the fact-finder toward the clinical client. But there has been virtually no attention paid to the role of sanism in the clinical setting.

Sanism is an irrational prejudice of the same quality and character as other irrational prejudices that cause and are reflected in prevailing social attitudes of racism, sexism, homophobia and ethnic bigotry. It permeates all aspects …
