Females And Computer-Mediated Communication : New Technologies, New Challenges, Kelly Coleman Jan 2003

Females And Computer-Mediated Communication : New Technologies, New Challenges, Kelly Coleman

Graduate Research Papers

Advanced technologies are changing the face of higher learning by creating opportunities for those who wish to continue their education. On-line education, currently the most common mode of education delivery, has revolutionized the way in which learning takes place. Adult females appear to benefit greatly from computer-mediated communication distance learning due to its flexibility. However, there has been a general lack of research and focus on the females as distance learners and their success in on-line learning. This literature review examines the reasons why females comprise the majority of computer-mediated students and also looks at those barriers that keep women …

Efficiency, Therapeutic Justice, Mediation, And Evaluation: Reflections On A Survey Of Unified Family Courts, Andrew Schepard, James W. Bozzomo

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In cooperation with the American Bar Association's Coordinating Council on Unified Family Courts, faculty and students of Hofstra University's Center for Children, Families and the Courts conducted a survey of various courts in states we believed had made a commitment to implement a unified family court (UFC) model. Based on a questionnaire developed by the Center and the Coordinating Council, Hofstra Law School students interviewed court administrators, family court judges, or knowledgeable members of the family court bar in eighteen states. A detailed description of the survey, its methodology, and its findings is being published in the Family Court Review.' …

Work And Family Variables As Related To Paternal Engagement, Responsibility, And Accessibility In Dual-Earner Couples With Young Children, Suzanne M. Nangle, Michelle L. Kelley, William Fals-Stewart, Ronald F. Levant

Psychology Faculty Publications

Fathers and mothers (N = 75 dual-earner couples) of preschool-aged children completed questionnaires that examined work and family variables as related to paternal involvement in three areas: engagement (i.e., directly interacting with the child), responsibility (i.e., scheduling activities and being accountable for the child's well-being), and accessibility (i.e., being available to the child but not in direct interaction). Fathers' reports of responsibility and accessibility were significantly predicted by structural variables and beliefs; however, fathers' reports of engagement were not predicted by work and family variables. Mothers' reports of work and family variables did not predict their reports of father involvement. …

Perpetual Mistrial: The Impropriety Of Transnational Human Rights Litigation In United States Courts, Charles F. E. Hollis Iii

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

Judge Kaufman held in a 1980 decision that a non-US citizen could file civil suits in the U.S. for human rights violations committed abroad by other aliens. Thus began the use of the federal law known as the Alien Tort Statute. This article takes a specific approach in analyzing this Act, looking at whether the unique structure and methodology of civil litigation in the U.S. are conducive to fairly and effectively promoting and enforcing international human rights. This work is divided into two parts. The first section analyzes why the structure and methodology of the American civil litigation system preclude …

The Essential Nexus Between Transformative Laws And Culture: The Ineffectiveness Of Dowry Prohibition Laws Of India, Tara S. Kaushik

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

Incidents of dowry-related violence increase yearly in modern India despite current laws aimed at deterring the cultural perpetuation of the practice. This article provides an understanding of the evolution of the dowry system, an analysis of India's dowry prohibition laws, and an analysis of the cultural notions that support the practice. Using this analysis the author suggests that Indian laws fail to eradicate dowry-related violence because the laws do not adequately address the fundamental notion of dowry exchange as a part of modern day culture in India. The article begins with a brief background on the meaning of dowry exchange. …

Fight Or Flight Of U.S.-Based Multinational Businesses: Analyzing The Causes For, Effects Of, And Solutions To The Corporate Inversion Trend, Hale E. Sheppard

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

When a person is confronted by a threat, he or she experiences a psychological and physiological response commonly known as "fight or flight." In general, this innate survival mechanism causes the body to direct blood to vital areas and to release lactic acid, adrenaline and other chemicals in order to prepare a person to either face the threat or flee immediately. Multinational corporations based in the United States, likewise, have recently displayed similar fight-or-flight behavior when faced with the threat of high taxes. Unfortunately for the U.S. economy, a growing number of these American corporations have chosen the latter: flight. …

Use Of The Combination Of The Brief And Basc-2 In Assessment Of Adhd, Andrea R. Knoll

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ADHD is one of the most frequently diagnosed childhood disorders in the United States today; however, diagnostic specificity remains challenging. Accepted models of ADHD routinely highlight the role of executive function (EF) deficits as a core feature of ADHD. However, performance based measures of EF do not consistently discriminate between ADHD and no-ADHD clinical groups. Research has supported use of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) in discriminating between ADHD and no-ADHD and between subtypes. However, EF deficits can occur for various reasons. Broad range behavior rating scales help identify areas of behavioral concern that may aid clinicians …

Putting It In Reverse: How Communal Relationships Are Pulled Back Into Exchange Norms By Conflict., Rakefet Yaakoba Richmond Jan 2003

Putting It In Reverse: How Communal Relationships Are Pulled Back Into Exchange Norms By Conflict., Rakefet Yaakoba Richmond

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a body of research suggesting that conflict affects individual's behavior and cognitions in a close relationship(eg,Baucom & Adams, 1987; Forgas 1994). Previous research found that individuals in close relationships adjust behavior and attributions depending on the presence or absence of conflict (eg Gottman,1979,1994). The current study examined if conflict led individuals to make dispositional (as opposed to situational) attributions and follow exchange (as opposed to communal) norms. Participants included 215 students who worked on a "joint" task with one of three types of partners: (a)significant other; (b)close friend, or (c)stranger. The first two represent standard examples of communal …

The Incidence Of Mental And Behavioral Disturbances In Dementia: The Cache County Study, Martin Steinberg, Jeannie-Marie E. Sheppard, Joann T. Tschanz, Maria C. Norton, David C. Steffens, John C. S. Breitner, Constantine G.. Lyketsos

Psychology Faculty Publications

A population-based prevalence sample of 355 residents of Cache County, Utah, who were diagnosed with dementia, was rated on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). Of the 355 residents, 119 had no neuropsychiatric symptoms at baseline and were, consequently, at risk for incident mental and behavioral disturbances. The NPI was readministered approximately 18 months later to 61 surviving participants. Sixty-nine percent developed at least one mental or behavioral symptom. Delusions were most common (28%), followed by apathy (21%), and aberrant motor behavior (21%). When this incidence rate of 69% was combined with a previously estimated prevalence rate of 61%, the cumulative 18-month …

The Independent Rep As A Source Of Competitive Advantage: An Actionable Scale For Rep Selection, Kathleen H. Gruben, Barbara J. Coe

Marketing: Faculty Publications

This study develops a scale that offers an actionable approach for suppliers’ use in selecting their reps. Rep selection is the critical first step suppliers take in developing profitable, long-term relationships with retailers. Retailers’ loyalties are often bestowed on the rep, rather than the supplier. As identified in the study, the rep needs to be professional, accommodating, ethical, sensitive, and compassionate to satisfy the retailer. The scale provides suppliers a technique for measuring these characteristics. Prior to this scale, no instrument was available to measure these characteristics, which increase the retailer’s likelihood of developing loyalty.
