Intimate Affiliation And Democracy: Beyond Marriage?, Linda C. Mcclain Jan 2003

Intimate Affiliation And Democracy: Beyond Marriage?, Linda C. Mcclain

Hofstra Law Review

This article takes up the question: Should family law and policy move beyond marriage? It assesses a spectrum of answers to that question. Rejecting proposals, on the one hand, to shore up traditional marriage, and, on the other, to abolish marriage, it argues that family law and policy should not move wholly beyond marriage, but should support marriage in a way that better fosters greater equality within and among families. The article is part of a symposium on "Marriage, Families, and Democracy," published in 32 Hofstra Law Review 23-421 (2003).

Methods And Techniques For Studying The History Of Sociology In America, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Harriet Martineau And The Sociology Of The American South, Michael R. Hill Jan 2003

Harriet Martineau And The Sociology Of The American South, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was the first significant woman sociologist, and was also the first methodologically competent sociologist to make systematic observations throughout the American South. Martineau’s writings on American society in the 1830s provide an enduring model of observational dedication and perseverance. Of the two and a half years that Martineau devoted to data collection in the U.S., she allotted six months to direct observation and face-to-face interviews in the southern states. From late December 1834 to early July 1835, Martineau completed first-hand observations in Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and …

Self-Mutilation And Homeless Youth: The Role Of Family Abuse, Street Experiences, And Mental Disorders, Kimberly A. Tyler, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kurt D. Johnson Jan 2003

Self-Mutilation And Homeless Youth: The Role Of Family Abuse, Street Experiences, And Mental Disorders, Kimberly A. Tyler, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kurt D. Johnson

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Self-mutilation, which is the act of deliberately harming oneself, has been overlooked in studies of homeless and runaway youth. Given their high rates of abuse and mental health disorders, which are associated with self-mutilation, homeless and runaway youth provide an ideal sample in which to investigate factors associated with self-mutilation among a nonclinical population. Based on interviews with 428 homeless and runaway youth aged 16 to 19 years in 4 Midwestern states, the current study revealed widespread prevalence of self-mutilation among these young people. Multivariate analyses indicated that sexual abuse, ever having stayed on the street, deviant subsistence strategies, and …

Sustainable Development In The Negotiation Of The Ftaa, Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger Jan 2003

Sustainable Development In The Negotiation Of The Ftaa, Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger

Fordham International Law Journal

First, I will briefly explain what is meant by hemispheric sustainable development law. Then, I will discuss the current progress of the FTAA from a sustainable development law perspective. To illustrate the links between trade liberalization, social and environmental law and policy in the Americas, I will briefly highlight potential social and environmental impacts and opportunities in several important areas of negotiations: services, intellectual property rights, competition law, government procurement and investment. (The directions of agricultural liberalization, market access and subsidies are also crucial to sustainable development, but are too extensive to discuss here). Then, I will consider the institutional …

Doing All You Can, Brother?': Visual Themes Of World War Ii American Propaganda Posters, Justin Rives Nicholas

Honors Theses

This thesis is a result of an in-depth analysis of the three thousand plus propaganda posters used in the United States during World War II. The bulk of these posters are housed at National Archives II in College Park, Maryland. The analysis was conducted within the context of several questions. What were the goals of the propagandists? How were those goals visually represented in the posters? What were the visual themes? Why were these goals and themes deemed necessary? How do the goals and themes fit into the overall context of a total war? The concept of being in a …

The Relationship Between Friendship Transition And Conflict., Danielle R. Jaroscak Jan 2003

The Relationship Between Friendship Transition And Conflict., Danielle R. Jaroscak

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The transition from acquaintanceship to friendship was examined in this study. In particular, the study focused on the development of friendship and how situations that may invite conflict affect that process.Participants were assigned to one of three relationship conditions(exchange,pre-friendship,communal) and read about a negative(conflict) and positive(non-conflict)scenario involving the assigned relationship partner. Each participant reported how he or she would feel in the imagined situations. The results of this study showed differences between the pre-friendship conditions and exchange and communal conditions. There is a pre-friendship condition felt as comfortable with the other's behavior as friends, and attributed their negative behavior to unstable, situational conditions,as is done for friends …
