A Qualitative Study Of Relational Aggression In Sixth Grade Girls, Catherine Tinsley Mclallen Jan 2003

A Qualitative Study Of Relational Aggression In Sixth Grade Girls, Catherine Tinsley Mclallen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Middle school can be a time of great upheaval and unfamiliar footing for a new sixth grader. When students enter middle school, the peer hierarchy and social dynamics of elementary school are often shifted in ways that can be confusing and intimidating. Many new things are expected of a sixth grader that was not expected from a fifth grader. Suddenly there are different teachers for all the classes. There is a choice of classes to take, homework, there is a schedule to memorize. Students are asked to take the initiative and decide what they want to do, rather than having …

An Analysis Of Physical Activity And Two Forms Of Self Defense Training And Their Impact On Women’S Sense Of Self-Efficacy, Elizabeth Susan Guernsey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since the mid-l 970s, incidences of rape in the United States have steadily increased. American females aged 16-24 are at the greatest risk to experience rape. This indicates that college-aged women have a high probability of experiencing a sexual assault during their college years. Women are at particularly high risk of being raped by an acquaintance or a date. This may be due to traditional social gender roles in American society. Rape Aggression Defense Systems is the largest self defense program for women that has become particularly popular on college campuses. Ozer and Bandura (1990) sought to study possible increases …

A Question Of Sanity: Women And In/Sanity In Bessie Head’S A Question Of Power And Sylvia Plath’S The Bell Jar, Amanda Lynn Graeber Jan 2003

A Question Of Sanity: Women And In/Sanity In Bessie Head’S A Question Of Power And Sylvia Plath’S The Bell Jar, Amanda Lynn Graeber

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The use of female mental illness in fiction has previously been characterized as a subversive act. Theorists such as Juliet Mitchell, Susan Gubar, and Sandra Gilbert have advocated the use of madness as a way of protesting patriarchal systems and language. Female madness in many cases has been viewed not only as a conscious choice, but as an option that is preferable to sanity. In their view, mental illness is an embodiment of a woman's rejection of the patriarchal order. I would suggest that mental illness is actually about powerlessness. The madwoman is placed in a space outside of normal …

Public Street Surveillance: A Psychometric Study On The Perceived Social Risk, David J. Brooks Jan 2003

Public Street Surveillance: A Psychometric Study On The Perceived Social Risk, David J. Brooks

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Public street surveillance, a domain of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), has grown enormously and is becoming common place with increasing utilization in society as an all-purpose security tool. Previous authors (Ditton, 1999; Davies, 1998; Horne, 1998; Tomkins, 1998) have raised concern over social, civil and privacy issues, but there has been limited research to quantify these concerns. There are a number of core aspects that could relocate the risk perception and therefore, social support of public street surveillance. This study utilized the psychometric paradigm to quantitatively measure the social risk perception of public street surveillance. The psychometric paradigm is a …

Internet Pharmacies And The Need For A New Federalism: Protecting Consumers While Increasing Access To Prescription Drugs, Linda C. Fentiman Jan 2003

Internet Pharmacies And The Need For A New Federalism: Protecting Consumers While Increasing Access To Prescription Drugs, Linda C. Fentiman

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In this article I will argue that Internet pharmacies pose a significant public health problem, as they raise the classic eternal triangle of health care issues--access, quality, and financing--in a new technological context. Part II describes the phenomena of Internet pharmacies, and Part III reviews the present regulatory scheme. Part IV explains why the current legal framework is inadequate to address the public health and safety problems posed by Internet pharmacies, focusing particularly on the jurisdictional, constitutional, and practical obstacles to effective state oversight of Internet pharmacies. Part V argues that comprehensive federal oversight of Internet prescribing and dispensing is …

Dying Twice is an important report. The work is a collaboration between the Corrections Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, which I chaired, and the Committee on Capital Punishment of the Association chaired by Norman Greene. The working group that researched and wrote the report was drawn from members of both committees. The attorneys and the physician who served on the committee are wonderful, talented, dedicated people. It was a pleasure to work with professionals of this caliber on such an important effort. Dying Twice was endorsed as the position of the Association …

Educating The Guess: Strategies, Concepts And Tools For The Fuzzy Front End Of Product Development, Antonie J. Jetter

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many companies lack efficient management of the early phases of new product development (NPD) - the socalled fuzzy front end (FFE). Rather than on structured methods, decision makers rely on ?gut ?feel? or ?guessing?. In an attempt to ?educate the guess? this paper discusses the activities and challenges of the FFE, as well as strategies to manage them successfully. It then briefly presents traditional and recent approaches to front-end management support. Based on the identified strengths and weaknesses of existing front-end solutions, the framework of a new management support system for the FFE is presented. Conceptually, the system is based …

The first section discusses sovereignty and the sources for foundational principles that pertain to the relationships among tribes, the states, and the federal government. The sources are the documented discourse and covenants of the constitutional evolution, the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union (Articles), and the Constitution of 1787 as they developed state jurisdiction related to Indian matters. Second, the paper discusses the colonial period and reality versus the fictions or myths of discovery and conquest. Third, the paper covers the conflict and unity in the pre-Revolutionary period. Individual Differences In Interpersonal Dependency In Older Adults: Development Of A Measure And Its Evaluation In Health Care Services, Deborah Gardner Jan 2003

Individual Differences In Interpersonal Dependency In Older Adults: Development Of A Measure And Its Evaluation In Health Care Services, Deborah Gardner

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Increasing dependency in older age is conceptualised differently by various disciplines. Psychologists have contributed to the understanding of dependency in older age by describing and explaining the functionality of dependency across the life-span. Psychological research has also examined variables (such as the responses of carers to-the dependent behayiours of older people) that exacerbate dependent feelings and behaviours (Baltes, 1996), but it has not included an individual difference measure of interpersonal dependency. According to Rosowsky~ Dougherty, Johnson and Gurian (1997), an understanding of the ways that personality style affects older adults' engagement and reception of health services would assist providers in …

Psychosocial Identity Development In College Students With Orthopedic Disabilities: College As Transformation, Kimberly Sue Jolly Jan 2003

Psychosocial Identity Development In College Students With Orthopedic Disabilities: College As Transformation, Kimberly Sue Jolly

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of my research study was to examine the processes of psychosocial identity development of college students with orthopedic disabilities. Using qualitative methods allowed my participants to speak for themselves-something that does not always happen-about their life experiences, many times showing the positive role college attendance played in their lives. Nine individuals participated in my study: three graduate students, one alumnus, and five undergraduates. The experiences they shared with me were looked at individually as well as together. I compared the data to a preliminary model I developed prior to the interviews, through reading and analyzing various minority identity …

Students’ Perceptions Of Instructor’S Written Feedback: Uncertainty Reduction In The Basic Communication Course, Naoki Kambe Jan 2003

Students’ Perceptions Of Instructor’S Written Feedback: Uncertainty Reduction In The Basic Communication Course, Naoki Kambe

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study is an ethnographic examination of a performance-based basic communication course, Oral Communication, at the University of Northern Iowa. During the Fall 2002 semester, I stayed in a lab section as a participant observer. After the semester was over, I conducted in-depth interviews with the selected students and the instructor. I looked at the classroom from an interpersonal perspective. Specifically, I focused on two major topics: students' uncertainty reduction in the classroom and their perceptions of the instructor's written feedback. Through this examination, I found that several important factors affected students' uncertainty reduction and their perceptions. Regarding written feedback, …

Teachers' Perceptions Of The Application Of Instructional Design Elements In The Distance Teaching Process, Lihua Zheng Jan 2003

Teachers' Perceptions Of The Application Of Instructional Design Elements In The Distance Teaching Process, Lihua Zheng

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Educators use an instructional design process to improve instruction and to ensure learning. Faculty who teach at a distance must rely heavily on the instructional design process because of constraints in distance instruction. Thus, it is especially important for instructors to know, understand, and apply instructional design elements when planning to teaching at a distance. However, little research has been done in this field. Therefore, additional research has become the focus of this study. This study examines the perceptions of instructors at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), Cedar Falls, Iowa, regarding how they understood and applied instructional design elements …

Introduction: The Utah Restorative Justice Conference, Erik Luna Jan 2003

Introduction: The Utah Restorative Justice Conference, Erik Luna

Utah Law Review

Restorative justice proves to be a fascinating topic and a provocative foil for challenging contemporary crime and punishment in the United States. The Utah Restorative Justice Conference may be the first of its kind in American legal academe, providing a much-needed forum to hash out the arguments for and against restorativism vis-d-vis traditional approaches to the criminal process. As such, the Symposium hopes to inspire further debate on restorative justice, its principles, and its practices. Restorativism certainly has both charms and warts, but given the current state of affairs in criminal courts and correctional facilities across the nation, the potential …

Repairing The Harm: Victims And Restorative Justice, Lawrence W. Sherman, Heather Strang Jan 2003

Repairing The Harm: Victims And Restorative Justice, Lawrence W. Sherman, Heather Strang

Utah Law Review

From a victim perspective, restorative justice has been shown usually to do better than the existing criminal justice system. It has met the burden of proof for benefiting one stakeholder in the process of justice. It might arguably lose that status if it is found that restorative justice also hurts offenders or communities. But in thousands of restorative justice conferences on three continents, no clear evidence has yet emerged that restorative justice has such negative side effects. Given the substantial evidence of unfairness and disrespect in the treatment of victims by criminal justice, restorative justice seems to be in a …

Cold Comfort: Law And Community In Ethan And Joel Coen's Fargo, Jeanne L. Carriere Jan 2003

Cold Comfort: Law And Community In Ethan And Joel Coen's Fargo, Jeanne L. Carriere

Utah Law Review

Comfort is thus offered in Fargo-to some. The Coens subvert that comfort by making clear that the refuge of Brainerd is available only to those who participate in its normative vision. That normative vision grounds community in a uniformity that extends beyond what is required to preserve the community, such as conformity to its fundamental narrative, to neutral but noticeable traits such as appearance and racial heritage. The Coens offer no redemptive vision by which to transform Brainerd's exclusionary nomos. Marge, who combines keen intellect with sustaining humanity, is the most likely redemptive figure; but the woman who can face …

Being And Acting Rational, Michael N. Huhns Jan 2003

Being And Acting Rational, Michael N. Huhns

Faculty Publications

Rationality alone is insufficient to specify agent design. Using economic theory, we can program agents to behave in ways that maximize their utility while responding to environmental changes. However, economic models for agents, although general in principle, are typically limited in practice because the value functions that are tractable essentially reduce an agent to acting selfishly. Building a stable social system from a collection of agents motivated by self-serving interests is difficult. Finally, understanding rationality and knowledge requires interdisciplinary results from artificial intelligence, distributed.

Making Markets: Network Effects And The Role Of Law In The Creation Of Strong Securities Markets, Robert B. Ahdieh Jan 2003

Making Markets: Network Effects And The Role Of Law In The Creation Of Strong Securities Markets, Robert B. Ahdieh

Faculty Scholarship

As Russia and other formerly socialist states construct market economies, the appearance of strong securities markets remains an unfulfilled expectation. Notwithstanding broad privatization of state-owned enterprises and the elimination of industrial subsidies - essential precursors to demand for capital-raising securities markets - stock markets in Central and Eastern Europe remain illiquid, inefficient, and unreliable.

Strong securities markets do not, it seems, neatly follow from the welfare-maximizing behavior of individuals and institutions. Nor can the appearance of securities markets be effectively dictated by government decree. Post-communist securities market transition therefore presents a puzzle: Do markets emerge, or must they be created? …

[Introduction To] The Professor's Guide To Teaching: Psychological Principles And Practices, Donelson R. Forsyth Jan 2003

[Introduction To] The Professor's Guide To Teaching: Psychological Principles And Practices, Donelson R. Forsyth

Bookshelf

The Professor's Guide to Teaching explores what research has revealed about effective teaching and mines this resource to offer useful suggestions and practical recommendations for both new and seasoned instructors. The book unfolds in a logical fashion, beginning with prepping and lecturing and ending with evaluating and documenting. Chapters achieve a rare blend of theoretical depth and practical utility. For example, Forsyth's analysis of lecturing as a form of communication includes recommendations for teaching that stress the importance of considering the source of the message, the nature of the message, and the characteristics of the receiver of the message. Similarly, …

Partnership With A Graduate Nursing Program: Voices Of The Community, Deborah Essex Forbes Lindell Jan 2003

Partnership With A Graduate Nursing Program: Voices Of The Community, Deborah Essex Forbes Lindell

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Academic-community partnerships (ACPs) are a means by which community-based organizations can implement their missions and programs of higher education can facilitate student educational objectives through real world learning experiences. Many ACPs are framed in the educational methodology, service-learning. Theoretical definitions of ACPs (as a type of inter-organizational relationship) describe them as relationships that are on-going, reciprocal and characterized by mutual trust and respect.

During the past 15 years, ACPs and service-learning have experienced a rapid growth in nursing education. Literature pertaining to ACPs in nursing education is largely anecdotal and concerns undergraduate nursing programs. There are few reports of research …
