"Where Will You Sleep Tonight?" The Samo Longhouse, A Metaphor Of Spatial And Social Structure, R. Daniel Shaw Dec 2003

"Where Will You Sleep Tonight?" The Samo Longhouse, A Metaphor Of Spatial And Social Structure, R. Daniel Shaw

Pacific Studies

The juxtaposition of physical space and social interaction among the precontact Samo people of Papua New Guinea's east Strickland Plain is analyzed through a rich cultural metaphor reflecting on where people habitually sleep. Where a person sleeps establishes individual status within the collectivity of a household, which is identified as both a dwelling and an interactive group of family-oriented people. A longhouse was typically built on a ridgetop amid gardens, sago-lined swamp, and surrounding forest, together creating an economic environment that, in effect, fed the community. Similarly, social space was created through the reciprocal exchange of female siblings that enabled …

Celebrating Mother's Day In A Melanesian Village Church, Deborah Van Heekeren Dec 2003

Celebrating Mother's Day In A Melanesian Village Church, Deborah Van Heekeren

Pacific Studies

Christianity dominates village sociality in the Hula villages of Papua New Guinea's southeastern coast to the extent that the United Church has appropriated and indigenized the Western custom of setting aside a day to celebrate motherhood. In the process Mother's Day has been transformed into an expression of local Christian values to which women should aspire. In many ways the events that take place invert gender roles, but we also find that certain things are always left to women. The events related here, through the perspective of the United Church Women's Fellowship (UCWF), also comment briefly on Adventism in Irupara …

The Church As Embodiment And Expression Of Community On Ujelang And Enewetak, Marshall Islands, Laurence Marshall Carucci Dec 2003

The Church As Embodiment And Expression Of Community On Ujelang And Enewetak, Marshall Islands, Laurence Marshall Carucci

Pacific Studies

The church as a culturally constructed location is constantly "unmade and remade" on Ujelang and Enewetak Atolls (Marshall Islands) with semantic values tied to wider social and historical changes. Stories about the original church represent it as a sacred site forming the physical, moral, and cosmogenic center of the Enewetak community. During World War II, Japanese military rule transformed the church into a location of resistance. During postwar exile to Ujelang Atoll, the village-centered church became a site where solidarity-enhancing practices allowed the community to confront isolation and suffering. A new church, built in 1978 as a symbol of reinvigorated …

Effects Of Sodium Metaborate On Kraft Pulping, Biljana M. Bujanovic Dec 2003

Effects Of Sodium Metaborate On Kraft Pulping, Biljana M. Bujanovic

Dissertations

The kraft lime cycle can be either replaced or supplemented by borate-based autocausticizing (total or partial autocausticizing, respectively). The borate-based autocausticizing uses sodium metaborate to produce sodium hydroxide in the two-step reaction performed in a recovery boiler and dissolving tank. In accordance with the borate-based autocausticizing chemistry, sodium metaborate is an additional chemical in both pulping and recovery. The studies of kraft pulping in the presence of sodium metaborate provide insight into the effect which sodium metaborate might have on the pulping process including the delignification rate, selectivity of lignin removal, and the properties of both pulp and black liquor. …

Psychophysically Derived Work Frequencies Associated With Roof Shingling Operations Involving Change In Grade, Sang Dae Choi Dec 2003

Psychophysically Derived Work Frequencies Associated With Roof Shingling Operations Involving Change In Grade, Sang Dae Choi

Dissertations

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of roof slope on psychophysical roof shingling frequency. Twelve healthy males (21-30 years old) were used as participants. Experiment one was designed to determine Maximum Acceptable Roof Shingling Frequency (MARSF) for a workday period using psychophysical methodology. Results indicate that 198 shingles/hr is an acceptable roof shingling frequency for a workday. Furthermore, 2 hours is an acceptable testing period (equivalent to the workday). Postural sway and physiological variables support these findings. Experiment two was designed to study the effect of slope (18°, 26°, and 34°) on MARSF. Experiment two indicates …

Three Essays On Financial Intermediation, Capital Formation, And Economic Growth And Development, Md. Habibur Rahman Dec 2003

Three Essays On Financial Intermediation, Capital Formation, And Economic Growth And Development, Md. Habibur Rahman

Dissertations

This dissertation contains three essays on financial intermediation, capital formation, and economic growth and development. The first essay presents a theoretical model explaining the role of financial intermediation in capital formation and economic growth. It outlines a model of search and matching equilibrium in financial economies where a lender owns capital and an entrepreneur owns entrepreneurial skill and output is produced when search generates a meeting between a lender and an entrepreneur. It is shown that investment in capital and skill is inefficient in autarky due to search frictions and an externality. We examine the autarkic equilibrium under bargaining-without-search and …

Picture Composition For A Robot Photographer, Michael Dixon, Cindy M. Grimm, William D. Smart Dec 2003

Picture Composition For A Robot Photographer, Michael Dixon, Cindy M. Grimm, William D. Smart

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We explain how to use simple composition rules to drive an automated, mobile photography system. The composition rules are used to determine both the location for a good photograph, and how to frame that photograph. We describe the composition component in the context of a larger application, a robotic photographer. The robot moves around an area with people in it, opportunistically looking for faces and taking photographs. We describe both how to find faces in the world and how to create “good” photographs of those faces.

Hand Rule Damages For Incompensable Losses, Robert Cooter Dec 2003

Hand Rule Damages For Incompensable Losses, Robert Cooter

San Diego Law Review

Courts should develop theory and practice of damages for incompensable losses based on the response of reasonable people to daily risks. Specifically, courts should compute damages based on the reasonable person's point of indifference between less risk and more expenditure on precaution. The Hand rule describes this point of indifference.

Instrumental Theories Of Compensation: A Survey, Richard Craswell Dec 2003

Instrumental Theories Of Compensation: A Survey, Richard Craswell

San Diego Law Review

This Article is to argue (albeit reluctantly)against the union of a compensatory remedy that can be and have been defended from the standpoint of corrective justice on the theory that corrective justice requires that a wrongdoer compensates those that have been wronged versus compensatory remedies that have been defended by economists, and by others who rely on instrument arguments, on the theory that compensatory remedies promote efficiency. In the process, I will survey the economic or instrumental arguments for compensation in some detail, for the benefit of those who may not have kept up with the economics literature. But this …

Rethinking Injury And Proximate Cause, John C.P. Goldberg Dec 2003

Rethinking Injury And Proximate Cause, John C.P. Goldberg

San Diego Law Review

Injury and proximate cause form two components of a plaintiff's prima facie negligence case. Although equals in this sense, they have received starkly different treatment at the hands of judges and scholars. Proximate cause has long attracted attention, yet has also managed to defy repeated efforts at characterization and explanation. Injury by contrast, seems to have been largely ignored. One of the many virtues of professor Perry's paper is that it prompts reconsideration of this disparate treatment from both ends. By offering a subtle and rich account of the related concept of "harm," Perry permits us to see that the …

Baselines And Compensation, F.M. Kamm Dec 2003

Baselines And Compensation, F.M. Kamm

San Diego Law Review

The first problem that we shall examine is raised by the cases in which by our tortious wrong act someone is either (1) made no worse off than he would have been because the injury is one he would have suffered anyway by another means or (2) made better off because, though the act produces an injury, it benefits him by interfering with an upcoming greater injury. Should we assign liability based on the fact that an injury was caused relative to how the person was in his prior uninjured state (namely, the causal approach)? Or, should we take account …

Compensation And Revenge, Emily Sherwin Dec 2003

Compensation And Revenge, Emily Sherwin

San Diego Law Review

Compensation is one of the least controversial goals of law; compensating for harms is assumed to be both efficient and morally praiseworthy. I shall argue that the moral component of this assumption needs refinement. Some of the features of legal remedies that pass as compensatory suggest that pursuit of compensation is not entirely virtuous.

The Grounds And Extent Of Legal Responsibility, Richard W. Wright Dec 2003

The Grounds And Extent Of Legal Responsibility, Richard W. Wright

San Diego Law Review

To question that is the title of this symposium, What Do Compensatory Damages Compensate?, requires consideration of the basic grounds and purposes of legal responsibility. The question is usefully brought into sharper focus by the specific questions and puzzles posed to the contributors to stimulate thought and discussion.

Dramatic Decreases In Clarity: Using The Penn Central Analysis To Solve The Tahoe-Sierra Controversy, Dana Larkin Dec 2003

Dramatic Decreases In Clarity: Using The Penn Central Analysis To Solve The Tahoe-Sierra Controversy, Dana Larkin

San Diego Law Review

This Comment discusses the issues and confusion regarding regulatory takings and the proper test for establishing a regulatory taking. The author starts by discussing the traditional ad hoc factors used to determine whether a taking had occurred. The author then discusses how these factors formed the basis of the three-factor test used in Penn Central Transportation Co. v. New York City. Next, the author explains the controversial area of temporary development moratoria and how this issue has been dealt with in the Lake Tahoe Basin of California . He suggests that the plaintiff's in Tahoe-Sierra Preservation Council, Inc. v. Tahoe …

Africa's Integration And Economic Development: The Journey So Far, N.O. Magbagbeola Dec 2003

Africa's Integration And Economic Development: The Journey So Far, N.O. Magbagbeola

Economic and Financial Review

The study was on efforts made to integrate African countries and its contribution to the economic development of the region. In a quest to halt the marginalization of Africa in the world economy, African leaders have at various times made efforts to pursue African economic integration as an integral part of African unity. These efforts led to the emergence of regional economic communities (RECs), which are the building blocks of the Africa's integration project. There are currently, 14 RECs in Africa, many of which overlap. Their performance in intra-regional trade has been less than satisfactory, partly as a result of …

The Influence Of Policies On Trade And Foreign Direct Investment, G. Nicoletti, Stephen S. Golub, D. Hajkova, D. Mirza, K.-Y. Yoo Dec 2003

The Influence Of Policies On Trade And Foreign Direct Investment, G. Nicoletti, Stephen S. Golub, D. Hajkova, D. Mirza, K.-Y. Yoo

Economics Faculty Works

This paper assesses the importance of border and non‐border policies for global economic integration. The focus is on four widely‐advocated policies: removing explicit restrictions to trade and FDI; promoting domestic competition; improving the adaptability of labour markets; and ensuring adequate levels of infrastructure capital. The analysis covers FDI and trade in both goods and services, thus aiming to account for the most important channels of globalisation and dealing with most modes of cross‐border services supply. The results highlight that, despite extensive liberalisation over the past two decades, there is scope for further reducing policy barriers to integration of OECD markets. …

Studies Of The Effects Of Pancreatic Beta Cell Antioxidant Transgenes On Experimental Models Of Diabetes., Hainan Chen Dec 2003

Studies Of The Effects Of Pancreatic Beta Cell Antioxidant Transgenes On Experimental Models Of Diabetes., Hainan Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pancreatic beta cells are extremely vulnerable to the destruction of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). In both type 1 and type 2 diabetes ROS are involved in the loss of U+000DF-cells. We hypothesized that the deficiency in ROS detoxifying system of U+000DF-cells resulted in U+000DF-cell vulnerability and enhanced ROS protection would protect from diabetes. To test this hypothesis, transgenic mice with overexpression of U+000DF-cell antioxidant protein metallothionein (MT), manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and catalase were produced on an FVB background. Initial studies demonstrated that these transgenes did not affect U+000DF-cell normal function and morphology. But those transgenes significantly protected pancreatic islets …
