Admittance And Impedance Spectroscopy On Cu(In,Ga)Se_2 Solar Cells, A. Sertap Kavasoglu, Habi̇be Bayhan

Turkish Journal of Physics

The present work reports some experimental results on the electrical properties of high efficiency ZnO/CdS/Cu(In,Ga)Se_2 heterojunction solar cells. Admittance spectroscopy has been employed for characterisation of the bulk and interface levels in the absorber Cu(In,Ga)Se_2 layer. The temperature dependent capacitance-frequency analysis indicated an emission from a shallow acceptor like defect level with an activation energy of about 75 meV. Information on the equivalent circuit model of the devices has been provided by the analysis of impedance measurements. The impedance data are presented in the Nyquist plot at several dc bias voltages at 300 K. The equivalent circuit model consisting of …

Software Project Management: The Role Of Modeling, Omar F. El-Gayar, Sreedhar Thota

Research & Publications

With the ubiquity of software and in the quest towards improving software development activities, the software engineering research community engaged in an active research agenda on modeling software processes. The modeling objectives ranged from process understanding, improvement, and management, to project management. In spite of the significant achievements in the field, few (if any) of the research results are adopted by the industry. This paper presents a brief review and a critical evaluation of the status of software process modeling practices with particular emphasis on their applications to project management from a practitioner's point of view as well as recommendations …

It can also provide recommendations of like-minded people, thus setting the stage for future collaboration and communication. An empirical study involving in-service and pre-service teachers was conducted using Altered Vista and presents results from an empirical study. The study examined the feasibility and utility of …

Theories Of Distributive Justice And Limitations On Taxation: What Rawls Demands From Tax Systems Symposium - Rawls And The Law: Panel Vi: Property, Taxation, And Distributive Justice, Linda Sugin Jan 2003

Theories Of Distributive Justice And Limitations On Taxation: What Rawls Demands From Tax Systems Symposium - Rawls And The Law: Panel Vi: Property, Taxation, And Distributive Justice, Linda Sugin

Faculty Scholarship

This Essay attempts to map out how such an inquiry would be conducted in light of Rawls. Rather than searching in theories of justice for required precepts of taxation, we might more fruitfully ask what constraints, if any, a particular theory of justice imposes on the tax system. Application of such an approach to Rawls's theory of justice may explain his apparent preference for a flat consumptionbased tax. This preference is otherwise quite puzzling in light of much of what Rawls wrote about economic justice, and might lead us to expect him to endorse a progressive income tax. If Rawls's …

States And Internet Enforcement, Joel R. Reidenberg Jan 2003

States And Internet Enforcement, Joel R. Reidenberg

Faculty Scholarship

This essay addresses the enforcement of decisions through internet instruments. The starting point is a brief justification of internet enforcement as the obligation of democratic states. Next, the essay argues that the movement to re-engineer the internet infrastructure by public and private actions also facilitates state enforcement of legal and policy decisions. The essay maintains that states will increasingly try to use network intermediaries such as payment systems and Internet Service Providers as enforcement instruments. Finally, and most importantly, the essay focuses on ways that states may harness the power of technological instruments such as worms, filters and packet interceptors …

The (Un)Favorable Judgment Of History: Deportation Hearings, The Palmer Raids, And The Meaning Of History, Harlan G. Cohen Jan 2003

The (Un)Favorable Judgment Of History: Deportation Hearings, The Palmer Raids, And The Meaning Of History, Harlan G. Cohen

Faculty Scholarship

As Americans respond to the events of September 11, 2001, they are being forced to contemplate their place in American history-past, present, and future. This has become particularly stark in the fight over secret deportation hearings. Following September 11, Attorney General John Ashcroft announced that the deportation hearings of "special interest" aliens would be closed to the public. Applying Richmond Newspapers's two-pronged logic-and-experience test, the Third and Sixth Circuits subsequently split over the constitutionality of the blanket closure. At the heart of their disagreement was the scarce history of deportation hearings and whether such hearings had been closed in the …

This Probe Provides Directly the Value of Specific Gas-Liquid Interfacial Area. However, for Obtaining Accurate Values of Bubble Velocity and Size, the Four-Point Probe Must Be Calibrated by a CCD Camera at the Same Conditions. Calibration Columns Have Been Developed for This Purpose Where the Bubble Size and Velocity Can Be Varied to Calibrate the Measurements by …

Instance Based Attribute Identification In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang Jan 2003

Instance Based Attribute Identification In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most research on attribute identification in database integration has focused on integrating attributes using schema and summary information derived from the attribute values. No research has attempted to fully explore the use of attribute values to perform attribute identification. We propose an attribute identification method that employs schema and summary instance information as well as properties of attributes derived from their instances. Unlike other attribute identification methods that match only single attributes, our method matches attribute groups for integration. Because our attribute identification method fully explores data instances, it can identify corresponding attributes to be integrated even when schema information …

Islam And The Challenge Of Democratic Commitment, Dr. Khaled Abou El-Fadl Jan 2003

Islam And The Challenge Of Democratic Commitment, Dr. Khaled Abou El-Fadl

Fordham International Law Journal

The author questions whether concurrent and simultaneous moral and normative commitments to Islam and to a democratic form of government are reconcilable or mutually exclusive. The author will argue in this Article that it is indeed possible to reconcile Islam with a commitment in favor of democracy. The author will then present a systematic exploration of Islamic theology and law as it relates to a democratic system of government, and in this context, address the various elements within Islamic belief and practice that promote, challenge, or hinder the emergence of an ideological commitment in favor of democracy. In many ways, …

Martyrdom, Suicide, And The Islamic Law Of War: A Short Legal History, Bernard K. Freamon Jan 2003

Martyrdom, Suicide, And The Islamic Law Of War: A Short Legal History, Bernard K. Freamon

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article is concerned with one key aspect of the law of the military jihad: the Islamic concept of martyrdom [shahada or istishhad]. This Article will demonstrate that the current Islamist financing and systematic organization and direction of self-annihilatory acts of violence is only weakly supported, if at all, by the classical sources on martyrdom in Islamic law and jurisprudence. The Article will show that current justifications for self-annihilatory violence are instead the result of a major reinterpretation of the theology and religious law on martyrdom and the military jihad advanced by Shi'ite theologians and jurists in Iraq and Iran …

Law "Of Our Own Style": The Evolution And Challenges Of The North Korean Legal System, Patricia Goedde Jan 2003

Law "Of Our Own Style": The Evolution And Challenges Of The North Korean Legal System, Patricia Goedde

Fordham International Law Journal

In this Essay, I first briefly present theoretical contexts that may aid in defining the North Korean legal system. Next, I trace the evolution of the North Korean legal system by examining the North Korean reaction to various legal influences of the Japanese occupation, Soviet tutelage, and traditional Korean practices, and outline the current politico-legal structure. In the final section, I inquire whether the North Korean legal structure can accommodate a different legal system necessitating rule-of-law requirements, as applied to its foreign investment regime and, perhaps some day, nationwide. Although the main purpose of this Essay is to introduce the …

The Sword In The Mirror – The Lawfulness Of North Korea's Use And Threat Of Use Of Nuclear Weapons Based On The United States' Legitimization Of Nuclear Weapons, Charles J. Moxley, Jr. Jan 2003

The Sword In The Mirror – The Lawfulness Of North Korea's Use And Threat Of Use Of Nuclear Weapons Based On The United States' Legitimization Of Nuclear Weapons, Charles J. Moxley, Jr.

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article addresses the lawfulness of the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea ("North Korea" or "DPRK"). I address the topic from three perspectives: 1) North Korea's own statements of the matter; 2) U.S. statements of the law as applied to its own nuclear weapons; and 3) my evaluation of the matter based on international law as stated by the United States and as found by the International Court of Justice in the Nuclear Weapons Advisory Decision.

America's De Facto Guest Workers: Lessons From Germany's Gastarbeiter For U.S. Immigration Reform, Nicole Jacoby Jan 2003

America's De Facto Guest Workers: Lessons From Germany's Gastarbeiter For U.S. Immigration Reform, Nicole Jacoby

Fordham International Law Journal

Part I of this Note describes West Germany's post-war Gastarbeiter [guest worker] program from 1961 to 1972. Part II focuses on the long-term results of the Gastarbeiter program, with special emphasis on the legal status of Turkish Gastarbeiter in Germany. This assessment concludes that guest worker programs inevitably result in the permanent settlement of foreigners in the host country. If not properly anticipated and planned for, this settlement leads to social stratification and political divisiveness. Part II also presents for comparison U.S. immigration policies and their effect on Mexican immigrant workers. The section asserts that the United States over the …

Are Foreign Nationals Entitled To The Same Constitutional Rights As Citizens?, David Cole Jan 2003

Are Foreign Nationals Entitled To The Same Constitutional Rights As Citizens?, David Cole

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Are foreign nationals entitled only to reduced rights and freedoms? The difficulty of the question is reflected in the deeply ambivalent approach of the Supreme Court, an ambivalence matched only by the alternately xenophobic and xenophilic attitude of the American public toward immigrants. On the one hand, the Court has insisted for more than a century that foreign nationals living among us are "persons" within the meaning of the Constitution, and are protected by those rights that the Constitution does not expressly reserve to citizens. Because the Constitution expressly limits to citizens only the rights to vote and to run …

Lessons From Nepal: Partnership, Privilege And Potential, Jane H. Aiken Jan 2003

Lessons From Nepal: Partnership, Privilege And Potential, Jane H. Aiken

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Dramatic differences in culture present students with the opportunity to gain considerable perspective on their own perceptions and a chance to operate in a legal environment that, like most endeavors in the world today, has become increasingly globalized. This kind of experience has generally been missing in the training of our university law students. The students in Washington University's Civil Justice Clinic have provided legal services to women and children who have been victims of violence in a wide array of socio-economic settings. They have also worked on policy initiatives that shape government on city, state and federal levels. But …

Law As Social Work, Jane H. Aiken, Stephen Wizner Jan 2003

Law As Social Work, Jane H. Aiken, Stephen Wizner

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In our work as lawyers for low income clients and as clinical teachers, we are sometimes told by our professional counterparts in private practice - especially those who work in large corporate firms - that what we do "isn't law, it's social work." Similarly, our students sometimes complain that the work they do on behalf of low income clients "isn't law, it's social work." In the past we have tended to respond to this "social worker" charge defensively. We insisted that what we and our students do is "law," that it is really no different from what private practitioners do …
