Analyzing Erp Implementation At A Public University Using The Innovation Strategy Model, Keng Siau, J. Messersmith Jan 2003

Analyzing Erp Implementation At A Public University Using The Innovation Strategy Model, Keng Siau, J. Messersmith

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have revolutionized the way companies are using information technology in their businesses. ERP was created in an effort to streamline business processes and has proven to be successful in many operations. Unfortunately, not all ERP implementations have met expectations. One way that businesses may be able to increase success rates is to embrace creativity and innovation in their ERP implementations. For businesses to do this, they must first understand how creativity originates and how that creativity can be integrated into business solutions. This article presents a case study that examines the ERP implementation at a …

Trading Agents Competing: Performance, Progress And Market Effectiveness, Michael P. Wellman, Shih-Fen Cheng, Daniel M. Reeves, Kevin M. Lochner Jan 2003

Trading Agents Competing: Performance, Progress And Market Effectiveness, Michael P. Wellman, Shih-Fen Cheng, Daniel M. Reeves, Kevin M. Lochner

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The annual trading agent competition offers agent designers a forum for evaluating programmed trading techniques in a challenging market scenario. TAC aims to spur research by enabling researchers to compare techniques on a common problem and build on each other's ideas. A fixed set of assumptions and environment settings facilitates communication of methods and results. As a multiyear event, TAC lets researchers observe trading agents' progress over time, in effect accelerating the evolution of an adapted population of traders. Given all the participant effort invested, it is incumbent on us to learn as much from the experience as possible. After …

Performance Measurement Framework For Hierarchical Text Classification, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Wee-Keong Ng Jan 2003

Performance Measurement Framework For Hierarchical Text Classification, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Wee-Keong Ng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hierarchical text classification or simply hierarchical classification refers to assigning a document to one or more suitable categories from a hierarchical category space. In our literature survey, we have found that the existing hierarchical classification experiments used a variety of measures to evaluate performance. These performance measures often assume independence between categories and do not consider documents misclassified into categories that are similar or not far from the correct categories in the category tree. In this paper, we therefore propose new performance measures for hierarchical classification. The proposed performance measures consist of category similarity measures and distance-based measures that consider …

Environmental Impacts Of Modern Agricultural Technology Diffusion In Bangladesh: An Analysis Of Farmers' Perceptions And Their Determinants, S Rahman Jan 2003

Environmental Impacts Of Modern Agricultural Technology Diffusion In Bangladesh: An Analysis Of Farmers' Perceptions And Their Determinants, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Farmers' perception of the environmental impacts of modern agricultural technology diffusion and factors determining such awareness were examined using survey data from 21 villages in three agro-ecological regions of Bangladesh. Results reveal that farmers are well aware of the adverse environmental impacts of modern agricultural technology, although their awareness remains confined within visible impacts such as soil fertility, fish catches, and health effects. Their perception of intangible impacts such as, toxicity in water and soils is weak. Level and duration of modern agricultural technology adoption directly influence awareness of its adverse effects. Education and extension contacts also play an important …

Retribution For Rats: Cooperation, Punishment, And Atonement, Michael A. Simons Jan 2003

Retribution For Rats: Cooperation, Punishment, And Atonement, Michael A. Simons

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

To mobsters, he is a "rat"; to drug dealers, a "snitch." To school children, he is a "tattletale"; to corporate executives, a "whistleblower." To cops, he is an "informant"; to prosecutors, a "cooperator." By whatever name he is known, the person who betrays his associates to the authorities is almost universally reviled. In movies, on television, in literature, the cooperator embodies all that society holds in contempt: he is disloyal, deceitful, greedy, selfish, and weak.

The cooperator, though, has long been a mainstay of our criminal justice system. For centuries, criminal defendants have received leniency in return for testimony …

An Examination Of Personality As A Predictor Of Guard Behavior In A Virtual Environment, Jean M. Catanzaro Jan 2003

An Examination Of Personality As A Predictor Of Guard Behavior In A Virtual Environment, Jean M. Catanzaro

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Military personnel need access to realistic training tools that can provide a safe environment in which to acquire skills that will generalize to real world tasks. A virtual environment (VE) is one such tool. The focus of the present study was to evaluate a VE as a training tool for military guards. The first goal was to examine the potential of VE technology to provide effective training for standing watch at a military checkpoint. The second goal was to study a set of personality traits that might predict performance. Participants completed the NEO Personality Inventory and were trained to perform …

Optimal Feedback Control For Ship Roll Motion Under Sea States, Anusit Anmanatarkul Jan 2003

Optimal Feedback Control For Ship Roll Motion Under Sea States, Anusit Anmanatarkul

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The primary influences of ship motion are roll motion. The purpose of this dissertation is to discuss a means to reduce the roll amplitude of ship motion in the case of zero forward speed using the roll mitigation device known as the flume tank, or U-tube, tank. Passive control and active control are studied. Optimal feedback control is the designated algorithm for activated roll mitigation device. The assumed model in this study is a submarine chaser. The linear coupled equation of swaying, rolling, and yawing motion of this assumed model is studied. The roll motion of this vessel is investigated …

Life-Extending Control For A Highly Maneuverable Flight Vehicle, Si-Bok Yu Jan 2003

Life-Extending Control For A Highly Maneuverable Flight Vehicle, Si-Bok Yu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the feasibility and potential of life extension control logic for reducing fatigue within aerospace vehicle structural components. A key underpinning of this control logic is to exploit nonintuitive, optimal loading conditions which minimize nonlinear crack growth behavior, as predicted by analytical fatigue models with experimentally validated behavior. A major simplification in the development of life extension control logic is the observation and justification that optimal stress loading conditions, as described by overload magnitude ratio and application interval, are primarily independent of crack length and therefore, component age. This weak relationship between optimal stress loading and structural age …

Generalized Predictive Control Of Ship Coupling Motions Using Active Flume Tanks, Abdulkarim Mohammed Alotaiwi Jan 2003

Generalized Predictive Control Of Ship Coupling Motions Using Active Flume Tanks, Abdulkarim Mohammed Alotaiwi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation uses the Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) approach to design a control system for a ship rolling motion coupled with the sway and yaw using an activated flume tank. GPC is a strategy based on system output prediction over finite horizon known as the prediction horizon. GPC controller is designed from the coefficients of the Autoregressive model with exogenous input (ARX) that are computed directly from input and output data. It computes the future control input based on the cost function with weighted input and output. System identification approach is implemented on the system to find the ARX coefficients …

Laser Emissions From Solid-State Dye-Doped Polymers, Chie Haw Lim Jan 2003

Laser Emissions From Solid-State Dye-Doped Polymers, Chie Haw Lim

Student Works (2000-2009)

Laser emissions were obtained from dye-doped polymers, namely, C460/PMMA, R6G(ClO₄)/PMMA, C460/PVA and R6G(ClO₄)/PVA, under the excitation from a Transversely Excited (TE) nitrogen laser. C460/PMMA and R6G(ClO₄)/PMMA slabs were fabricated by using a low-pressure-compression molding method; whereas C460/PVA and R6G(ClO₄)/PVA films were fabricated in the form of thin films by using the dip-coat method. Laser efficiencies of 8.7% and 3% were achieved from the optimum dye concentrations of R6G(ClO₄)/PMMA (1 x 10⁻³ M) and C460/PMMA (2.25 x 10⁻² M) respectively. For dye-doped PV A thin films, the laser efficiencies of 8.27% and 6.3% were obtained from the optimum dye concentrations of …

Religion, Faith-Based Community Organizing, And The Struggle For Justice, Richard L. Wood Jan 2003

Religion, Faith-Based Community Organizing, And The Struggle For Justice, Richard L. Wood

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

On May 2, 2000, three thousand people converged on the State Capitol in Sacramento, California. But this was not the usual frenzy of lobbyists serving the interests of the well-off, using the tools of well-oiled political action committees. Rather, these were working poor, working class, and lower-middle income people lately referred to as working families and they went to Sacramento because they were tired of living on the verge of financial ruin or physical debility. Attendees were demanding adequate health coverage for people left out by current health care arrangements and they were angry about that, at a time when …

Law Enforcement Authority In Indian Country, Melissa L. Tatum Jan 2003

Law Enforcement Authority In Indian Country, Melissa L. Tatum

Tribal Law Journal

The protection order has proven to be an effective tool in the war against domestic violence. A protection order, however, is good only so long as it can be enforced, and enforcement has proven to be a problem when a person travels with a protection order to a different jurisdiction.
