Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

This article considers the relationship between culture, specifically the theatre, and the State during the Second Republic and analyses some of the work of certain writers who employed propagandistic theatre to fUrther their political aims. It examines the purpose, both political and artistic, of this theatre before going on to demonstrate how its reception by the state"s censors during the Second Republic and the early Civil War years mirrored the political changes and confusion of the period. Finally, some conclusions are drawn about the worth of this theatre, both as art and as social document.

Lorca, El Cubismo Y La Distorsión Del Tiempo, Huw Aled Lewis Dec 2003

Lorca, El Cubismo Y La Distorsión Del Tiempo, Huw Aled Lewis

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Traditionally, Lorca"s plays Comedia sin titulo. El público, and Así que pasen cinco años have been analysed as experimental works that are radically different from his rural trilogy or other, more conventional works. This article will approach Así que pasen cinco años from a dífferent viewpoint, examining it as a direct precursor of Bodas de sangre and as an experiment not only in projecting the complexities of the human mind, but also as an attempt to translate to the theatre some of the ideas that have been associated with pictorial Cubism.

Tradicionalmente, obras lorquíanas como Comedia sin titulo, …

Modernizing China’S Military: A High-Stakes Gamble?, Howard M. Krawitz Dec 2003

Modernizing China’S Military: A High-Stakes Gamble?, Howard M. Krawitz

Strategic Forums

This Strategic Forum paper examines the political, social, and strategic risks associated with China’s accelerated military modernization. While Beijing seeks to transform the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) into a technologically advanced, professional force capable of supporting China’s rise as a major power, the author argues that modernization may carry significant internal and regional consequences. The paper analyzes how professionalization, expanded recruitment from urban and educated populations, and enhanced military capabilities could alter the PLA’s traditional identity as the armed wing of the Chinese Communist Party. It explores potential tensions between party control and military professionalism, evolving civil-military relations, and the …

Spatial Distribution Patterns Of Mistletoe (Antidaphne Viscoidea: Eremolepidaceae, And Phoradendron Undulatum: Viscaceae) On Psidium Guajava (Mrytaceae) In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2003, Matthew Greenfield Dec 2003

Spatial Distribution Patterns Of Mistletoe (Antidaphne Viscoidea: Eremolepidaceae, And Phoradendron Undulatum: Viscaceae) On Psidium Guajava (Mrytaceae) In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2003, Matthew Greenfield

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Spatial distributions of mistletoe are noticeably clustered but unexamined in Monteverde, Costa Rica. To better understand their spatial structure, I examined the dispersion of two species of epiphytic mistletoe (Antidaphne viscoidea: Eremolepidaceae and Phoradendron undulatum: Viscaceae) within and between host trees. Six sites on one hill in Cañitas, Costa Rica were surveyed for data relating to dispersion structure (nearest neighbor distance and frequency within host trees). Additional study was done on the spatial dispersion on the host tree Psidium guajava, and it was found to have clustered dispersions. Indices of dispersion and tests comparing observed results to Poisson distributions showed …

Distribution Patterns Of The Tree Ferns Alsophila Erinacea And A. Polystichoides (Cyatheaceae) In Cloud Forests Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2003, Stephen Gottschalk

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The effects of elevation on the tree ferns Alsophila erinacea and A. polystichoides (Cyatheaceae) distributions were examined between 1550 m and 1800 m in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Alsophila erinacea and A. polystichoides prefer similar habitat types and overlap almost completely in their elevational ranges, making them ideal species for comparison. Six transects were made in each of five-50 m elevational blocks between 1550 m and 1800 m for a total of 30 transects. Transects along a ridge trail were compared with those on a trail on the side of a slope and were found to contain considerably less Alsophila tree …

Religion, Science, And Evolution: Paul Tillich's Fourth Way, Richard Grigg Dec 2003

Religion, Science, And Evolution: Paul Tillich's Fourth Way, Richard Grigg

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In his book God After Darwin John Haught provides a useful categorization of theological approaches to evolution: some theologians actively oppose Darwinian evolution, another group maintains that science and religion have nothing to say to one another, and a third seeks to engage evolution. Haught wishes to pursue the third way. But many theological attempts to talk about divine action in the world, including divine involvement in the process of evolution, run afoul of the scientific principle of the conservation of matter-energy. Haught's reliance on the now-familiar notion that information can have causal efficacy does not in fact escape this …

Because A Better World Is Possible: Women Casino Workers, Union Activism And The Creation Of A Just Workplace, Susan Chandler

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Based on a re-analysis of data from a qualitative study of the work experience of 36 women casino workers, this article examines the contributions and personal characteristics of the 13 women in the sample who described themselves as committed union activists. These women, all leaders in the Hotel Employees, Restaurant Employees Union, were proud that collectively they had improved wages, benefits, and the conditions of work in Nevada casinos, and had created an environment that reinforced pride in a job well-done, provided job security, and promoted strong families and communities. These women's workplace experience serves as a reminder to the …

Building Strategic Leadership And Management Capacity To Improve School Effectiveness, Kelvin Canavan Dec 2003

Building Strategic Leadership And Management Capacity To Improve School Effectiveness, Kelvin Canavan

Journal of Catholic Education

The building of leadership and management capacity with a focus on teaching and learning effectiveness has been a defining characteristic of the Catholic schools in Sydney, Australia, during the past decade. During the 1990s, the leaders of the 150 parish primary and regional secondary schools in the Archdiocese of Sydney adopted a common leadership and management framework that incorporates long-term strategic planning with an annual implementation cycle characterized by a sharp focus on teaching and learning outcomes. Principals and senior staff are involved in an ongoing performance management plan that is linked to the schools’ annual curriculum goals and targets. …

The Sacred And The Secular: Aligning A Marianist Mission With Professional Standards Of Practice In An Educational Leadership Doctorial Program, Darla J. Twale, Carolyn S. Ridenour

Journal of Catholic Education

This inquiry was conducted to explore how the characteristics of our university’s religious mission are interwoven into our educational leadership doctoral program and are manifest in the structure and learning experiences that our students encounter. We examined how these characteristics might correspond to or relate to the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) standards that resulted from national reform initiatives in educational leadership in the mid 1990s. We concluded that the foundations of the PhD program are built solidly on the distinctive characteristics and identity of our founders and are aligned with these professional standards as well. Implications for universities …

Catholic Higher Education And Latino(A) Students: Exploring The Experience Of University Undergraduates, Lisa M. Raphael, Michael Pressley, Jennifer Kane

Journal of Catholic Education

The experience of Latino(a) undergraduates at Notre Dame was the focus of this study. In general, the students had a positive experience at the university, but one that included challenges, including physical separation from family and familiar community. Family and spiritual supports were important to the Latino(a) students as they coped with difficulties they encountered at the university, than for a comparable sample of Anglo students attending Notre Dame.

Validation And Use Of The Catholic School Graduate Characteristics Inventory, Jeffrey P. Dorman Dec 2003

Validation And Use Of The Catholic School Graduate Characteristics Inventory, Jeffrey P. Dorman

Journal of Catholic Education

Scales and subscales to assess the desirable characteristics of Catholic school graduates were developed and validated using a sample of 557 alumni of Australian Catholic high schools. Exploratory factory analysis supported a 4 scale structure (viz., Religious Faith & Spiritual Development, Personal Integration, Social Responsibility, and Life-long Learning Skills). The utility of this instrument, the Catholic School Graduate Characteristics Inventory (CSGCI), is enhanced by the optional subdividing of each scale into 3 internally consistent subscales. The use of the CSGCI revealed statistically significant differences in the characteristics of Catholic school graduates according to gender and year of graduation. These results …

The Mechanics Of Microeconomic Choice: A School Option Perspective, Ikwukananne I. Udechukwu Dec 2003

The Mechanics Of Microeconomic Choice: A School Option Perspective, Ikwukananne I. Udechukwu

Essays in Education

The development of this paper describes uniquely the mechanics of choice in the delivery of education services relative to the public school system and school options. Three components, which magnify choice, are consumer (parents), market (pupils), and producer (government). Macbeth (1989) notes that there are four groups of people who benefit from the education system, namely: (1) the pupil (children) (2) the parent (3) the owners of a school (government) and (4) society at large. The first three beneficiaries of the education system are appropriately linked to the three components of choice as illustrated in the model and discussed in …

Mesenteric Cystic Teratoma In Children, Abdullatif A. Al-Arfaj, Mohammad A. El-Shawarby, Fatma A. Al-Mulhim, Amer A. Lardhi

Saudi Medical Journal

Mesenteric teratoma is an extremely rare tumor, arising, akin all other teratomas, from totipotent primordial cells and displays a mixture of tissues of tridermal or bidermal origin. Two cases of mature mesenteric teratoma in a 5-month-old girl and a 4-month-old boy, the youngest reported in the literature, excluding a case recently diagnosed prenatally, are described. Diagnostic tools, differential diagnosis and management are also discussed.

"Where Will You Sleep Tonight?" The Samo Longhouse, A Metaphor Of Spatial And Social Structure, R. Daniel Shaw Dec 2003

"Where Will You Sleep Tonight?" The Samo Longhouse, A Metaphor Of Spatial And Social Structure, R. Daniel Shaw

Pacific Studies

The juxtaposition of physical space and social interaction among the precontact Samo people of Papua New Guinea's east Strickland Plain is analyzed through a rich cultural metaphor reflecting on where people habitually sleep. Where a person sleeps establishes individual status within the collectivity of a household, which is identified as both a dwelling and an interactive group of family-oriented people. A longhouse was typically built on a ridgetop amid gardens, sago-lined swamp, and surrounding forest, together creating an economic environment that, in effect, fed the community. Similarly, social space was created through the reciprocal exchange of female siblings that enabled …

Effects Of Sodium Metaborate On Kraft Pulping, Biljana M. Bujanovic Dec 2003

Effects Of Sodium Metaborate On Kraft Pulping, Biljana M. Bujanovic

Dissertations

The kraft lime cycle can be either replaced or supplemented by borate-based autocausticizing (total or partial autocausticizing, respectively). The borate-based autocausticizing uses sodium metaborate to produce sodium hydroxide in the two-step reaction performed in a recovery boiler and dissolving tank. In accordance with the borate-based autocausticizing chemistry, sodium metaborate is an additional chemical in both pulping and recovery. The studies of kraft pulping in the presence of sodium metaborate provide insight into the effect which sodium metaborate might have on the pulping process including the delignification rate, selectivity of lignin removal, and the properties of both pulp and black liquor. …

Picture Composition For A Robot Photographer, Michael Dixon, Cindy M. Grimm, William D. Smart Dec 2003

Picture Composition For A Robot Photographer, Michael Dixon, Cindy M. Grimm, William D. Smart

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We explain how to use simple composition rules to drive an automated, mobile photography system. The composition rules are used to determine both the location for a good photograph, and how to frame that photograph. We describe the composition component in the context of a larger application, a robotic photographer. The robot moves around an area with people in it, opportunistically looking for faces and taking photographs. We describe both how to find faces in the world and how to create “good” photographs of those faces.

Hand Rule Damages For Incompensable Losses, Robert Cooter

San Diego Law Review

Courts should develop theory and practice of damages for incompensable losses based on the response of reasonable people to daily risks. Specifically, courts should compute damages based on the reasonable person's point of indifference between less risk and more expenditure on precaution. The Hand rule describes this point of indifference.
