Cross Hedging Jet Fuel On The Singapore Spot Market, Ephraim Clark, Mark Tan, Radu Tunaru Dec 2003

Cross Hedging Jet Fuel On The Singapore Spot Market, Ephraim Clark, Mark Tan, Radu Tunaru

International Journal of Banking and Finance

In this paper we test for the most effective cross hedging instrument for the Singapore spot market in jet fuel over the period February 4, 1997 to August 21, 2001. Our results are mixed. We find that the heating oil contract is the best in-sample cross-hedging instrument. It has the highest correlation with the spot price and gives the best regression results. However, after correcting for serial correlation, the goodness of fit measured by R2 is rather low. Out of sample results are weak for all models and ambiguous with respect to the heating oil contract.

Market Efficiency And Integration: An Examination Of Indian Stock Market, Chandra Shekhar Bhatnagar Dec 2003

Market Efficiency And Integration: An Examination Of Indian Stock Market, Chandra Shekhar Bhatnagar

International Journal of Banking and Finance

This paper examines the efficiency and integration of the Indian stock market. The weak form of efficiency has been tested by studying the stationarity characteristics of the MSCI Stock Price Index of India. For testing the semi-strong form of efficiency and integration of the Indian Stock Market with the macro phenomenon of emerging stock markets of the world, the causality between the MSCI Stock Price Index of India and the MSCI EMF Index has been studied. The results point out that the Indian Stock Market is efficient in its weak sense. However, the same is not true for the semi-strong …

Recent Trends In Global Fdi Flows: Implications For The 21st Century, Chiaku Chukwuogor Ndu Dec 2003

Recent Trends In Global Fdi Flows: Implications For The 21st Century, Chiaku Chukwuogor Ndu

International Journal of Banking and Finance

This paper examines recent global trends of foreign direct investment (FDI) flows and the benefits derivable by the recipient countries. Some of the developed countries of the West, Japan and China are the greatest recipients of FDI flows. There has been dramatic increase in FDI flows to developing countries in Asia, Latin America and the transition countries in Europe. In general developing countries are still unable to attract significant FDI. Africa's share of the FDI flows though slightly on the increase has been abysmally low. The identifiable reasons for this trend were highlighted. To achieve a more balanced flow of …

Productivity And Stock Returns: 1951-2002, A. M. Parhizgari, Abe Aburachis Dec 2003

Productivity And Stock Returns: 1951-2002, A. M. Parhizgari, Abe Aburachis

International Journal of Banking and Finance

There is considerable concern whether the decline in stock market returns will eventually exert negative changes in the productivity data. This paper examines the long run, or the equilibrium, relationship between productivity and stock returns for the 1951-2002 period. It introduces the notion of equilibrium as represented by the co-movements of economic variables in the long run. This notion is viewed to be broader than the economic theory definition of equilibrium that usually means market clearance. Acknowledging that structural changes in economic time series are hard to detect, an alternative approach employing pair-wise and multifactor cointegration along with VAR modeling …

Insider Trading Around Esop Announcements: Wealth Effect Vs. Control Effect, Zahid Iqbal, Glenn N. Pettengill, Shekar Shetty Dec 2003

Insider Trading Around Esop Announcements: Wealth Effect Vs. Control Effect, Zahid Iqbal, Glenn N. Pettengill, Shekar Shetty

International Journal of Banking and Finance

Following the enactment of ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act) in 1974, employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) have become a popular form of employee compensation among U.S. companies. The introduction of an ESOP has important implications for management interest that should encourage insiders buying activity. This paper documents that unusual insider buying activity has indeed resulted from the introduction of an ESOP. Further we examine two competing explanations, the wealth hypothesis and the control hypothesis, for the increase in insiders buying activity. We conclude that insiders buying activity is primarily motivated by control considerations.

The Extended Black-Scholes Model With-Lags-And "Hedging Errors", Mondher Bellalah Dec 2003

The Extended Black-Scholes Model With-Lags-And "Hedging Errors", Mondher Bellalah

International Journal of Banking and Finance

Extract:

The Black-Scholes model is derived under the assumption that hedging is done instantaneously. In practice, there is a "small" time that elapses between buying or selling the option and hedging using the underlying asset. Under the following assumptions used in the standard Black-Scholes analysis, the value of the option will depend only on the price of the underlying asset S, time t and on other variables assumed constants. These assumptions or "ideal conditions" as expressed by Black-Scholes are the following.

Outsider Estimation Of The Fair Value Of Bank Stocks: Computational And Conceptual Issues, Mohamed Ariff, Lina Suranto Dec 2003

Outsider Estimation Of The Fair Value Of Bank Stocks: Computational And Conceptual Issues, Mohamed Ariff, Lina Suranto

International Journal of Banking and Finance

This paper attempts to fill a void in the finance literature by reporting the reliability of theoretical valuation models against the market values of banking corporations. The dividend, operating cash flow and the free cash flow valuation approaches are operationalised to estimate fair values of banks. These values are then compared with market values. The results, using the Theil's U-coefficient, show that the operating cash flow approach provides estimates that are better than the naive model estimates. The other two approaches produced results no better than a naive model. A probable reason for the poor performance of the free cash …

Optimization Of Breast Cancer Screening Modalities, Yu Shen, Giovanni Parmigiani Dec 2003

Optimization Of Breast Cancer Screening Modalities, Yu Shen, Giovanni Parmigiani

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Mathematical models and decision analyses based on microsimulations have been shown to be useful in evaluating relative merits of various screening strategies in terms of cost and mortality reduction. Most investigations regarding the balance between mortality reduction and costs have focused on a single modality, mammography. A systematic evaluation of the relative expenses and projected benefit of combining clinical breast examination and mammography is not at present available. The purpose of this report is to provide methodologic details including assumptions and data used in the process of modeling for complex decision analyses, when searching for optimal breast cancer screening strategies …

Modeling The Incubation Period Of Anthrax, Ron Brookmeyer, Elizabeth Johnson, Sarah Barry Dec 2003

Modeling The Incubation Period Of Anthrax, Ron Brookmeyer, Elizabeth Johnson, Sarah Barry

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Models of the incubation period of anthrax are important to public health planners because they can be used to predict the delay before outbreaks are detected, the size of an outbreak and the duration of time that persons should remain on antibiotics to prevent disease. The difficulty is that there is little direct data about the incubation period in humans. The objective of this paper is to develop and apply models for the incubation period of anthrax. Mechanistic models that account for the biology of spore clearance and germination are developed based on a competing risks formulation. The models predict …

Assessing A Media Discernment Course For Freshmen At Illiana Christian High School: A Case Study, William Boerman-Cornell

Master of Education Program Theses

This case study examines the effectiveness of a team-taught mass-media freshman level course on discernment of media messages, and decision-making. By means of pre- and post- course surveys of students and faculty, this study examines students' decisions about consuming mass media and how after taking the course, their media selection process became more complex, deliberate, and organized. It also examines faculty response to the course in terms of how it appears to affect the students and how it affects faculty teaching and learning.

Love At What Price? Estimating The Value Of Marriage, Michael Conlin, Stacy A. Dickert-Conlin, Elyse Whitney Dec 2003

Love At What Price? Estimating The Value Of Marriage, Michael Conlin, Stacy A. Dickert-Conlin, Elyse Whitney

Economics - All Scholarship

Using a law within Social Security that provides clear financial incentives to delay marriage, we estimate the financial value of a month of marriage. Specifically, the law provides that widows who are eligible for Social Security benefits on their deceased spouse's earnings records are eligible for benefits at age 60, unless they remarry before that age. If they remarry before that age, they cannot claim widow benefits and must wait until at least age 62 to claim spousal benefits on their new husband's record, which are typically less generous than widow benefits. To generate an estimate of what this behavior …

The Effects Of The Viscidity Of The Client-Agency Relationship And The Agency's Expert Power On The Level Of Personalization In Advertising Campaigns, Svetlana Kirpichenko Dec 2003

The Effects Of The Viscidity Of The Client-Agency Relationship And The Agency's Expert Power On The Level Of Personalization In Advertising Campaigns, Svetlana Kirpichenko

Theses

This study examines the effect of the viscidity of the corporate client-advertising agency relationship and of the expert power exercised by the agency on the level of personalization in the resultant print campaign. A phone survey of 250 advertising agencies nationwide provides statistical support to the findings. The results indicate that for those advertising agencies that perform a significant volume of work on a retainer basis, the expert power exercised by the agencies and the level of the viscidity of the relationship between the clients and the agencies are in close correlation to the level of personalization employed by the …

Say Cheese: The Constitutionality Of State-Mandated Airtime On Public Broadcasting Stations In Wisconsin, Andrew D. Cotlar Dec 2003

Say Cheese: The Constitutionality Of State-Mandated Airtime On Public Broadcasting Stations In Wisconsin, Andrew D. Cotlar

Federal Communications Law Journal

Last year, the State of Wisconsin passed legislation which would require statechartered public broadcasting television networks to carry political advertising for candidates free of charge. In this article, Andrew Cotlar raises many concerns about the wisdom of such legislation and the impact this trend may have on public broadcasters throughout the nation. The author begins by analyzing the current position of the law on political access requirements, at both federal and state levels, and then argues that the public television stations should continue to be free to exercise substantial editorial discretion. The Article proceeds to critique the Wisconsin statute as …

Payoff Continuity In Incomplete Information Games: A Comment, Casey G. Rothschild Dec 2003

Payoff Continuity In Incomplete Information Games: A Comment, Casey G. Rothschild

Economics Faculty Scholarship

Kajii and Morris (J. Econ. Theory 1998, 267-276) provide necessary and sufficient conditions for two priors to be strategically close. The restrictiveness of these con- ditions establishes that strategic behavior can be highly sensitive to the assumed prior. Their results thus recommend care in the use of priors in economic modelling. Unfortunately, their proof of a central proposition fails for zero probability types. This comment corrects their proof to account for these cases.

The essays provide valuable information on modern historiography in the history of psychology and the construction of historical narrative based on archival resources.

Trust, Collaboration, And Financial Return In Conservation/Development Partnerships, New England Environmental Finance Center Dec 2003

Trust, Collaboration, And Financial Return In Conservation/Development Partnerships, New England Environmental Finance Center

Economics and Finance

In early 2002 the New England Environmental Finance Center hosted a series of roundtable discussions among municipal officials, residential developers, land trust representatives, and others about "Innovative Approaches to Land Conservation and Smart Growth". Among our observations was that for many of the over 20 conservation/development partnerships we discussed in the series, creation and maintenance of trust was central to success or failure of various stages of the partnership. This suggested a link between creation of trust and financial return for traditionally opposed project partners.

To further examine this matter, we interviewed 11 round table participants and asked questions about …

Lewis And Clark And The Geology Of The Great Plains, Robert F. Diffendal Jr., Anne P. Diffendal Dec 2003

Lewis And Clark And The Geology Of The Great Plains, Robert F. Diffendal Jr., Anne P. Diffendal

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark undertook their journey with the Corps of Discovery in 1804-1806 in order to explore the area that the United States had purchased from France in 1803. Then known as Louisiana, this region included almost everything west of the Mississippi to the continental divide. In order to find the best route across the continent, President Thomas Jefferson charged Lewis with following the Missouri River to its headwaters and then locating rivers flowing down the west side of the Rocky Mountains to the Columbia River and into the Pacific Ocean. Jefferson's written instructions further specified that the …

A Critical Study On The Religious Economy Of The Korean Mission Field (1884 - 1910), Seonghan Kim

Seminary Masters Theses

The church in Korea is well known for its rapid growth between 1960 and 1990, but remarkable church growth has been a part of Korean church history since the first missionaries arrived. This paper is the result of critical dialogue between the field of sociology and the study of religion. It applies the theory of religious economy to the Korean mission field during the period of 1884-1910. Religious economy is a sociological theory which has made unique and influential contributions to recent religious studies, especially in the United States. The theory attempts to explain the human side of religion based …

Standards Of Holistic Nursing Practice As Guidelines For Quality Undergraduate Nursing Curricula, Noreen Cavan Frisch Dec 2003

Standards Of Holistic Nursing Practice As Guidelines For Quality Undergraduate Nursing Curricula, Noreen Cavan Frisch

Nursing Faculty Publications

The accreditation criteria of the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) direct faculty to select nationally developed standards for professional practice to guide curricula and to articulate curriculum outcomes. Recently, the CCNE proposed that all undergraduate programs should adopt the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials of Baccalaureate Education as one set of national standards for undergraduate and prelicensure programs. Standards of Holistic Nursing Practice, developed by the American Holistic Nurses’ Association, is an additional set of standards that assists in defining quality for undergraduate nursing education. Standards of Holistic Nursing shares major concepts with Essentials; however, it …
