The Subcircuit Extraction Problem, Nian Zhang, Donald C. Wunsch, Frank Harary
The Subcircuit Extraction Problem, Nian Zhang, Donald C. Wunsch, Frank Harary
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The steady down scaling of CMOS device dimensions has been the main stimulus to the growth of microelectronics and computer aided very large scale integration (VLSI) design. But the more an integrated circuit (IC) is scaled, the higher its packing density becomes. The increasing size of chips, measured in either area or number of transistors, and the waste of the large capital investment involved in fabricating and testing circuits that do not work, make layout analysis and verification an important part of physical design automation. The most efficient way to overcome these difficulties is to identify a related collection of …

A Discrete-Time Model For Spatio-Temporally Correlated Mimo Wssus Multipath Channels, Chengshan Xiao, Jingxian Wu, Sang-Yick Leong, Y. Rosa Zheng, Khaled Ben Letaief
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a statistical discrete-time model is proposed for simulating wideband MIMO channels which experience spatially and temporally correlated, widesense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) multipath Rayleigh fading. A new method is also presented to efficiently generate the correlated MIMO channel coefficients, which can be used for accurate simulation of physical continuous-time MIMO channel. The statistic accuracy of the discrete-time MIMO channel model is rigorously verified through theoretical analysis and extensive simulations in different criteria.
Electrochemical And Hydrodynamic Interferences On The Performance Of An Oxygen Microsensor With Built-In Electrochemical Microactuator, Chang-Soo Kim, Chae-Hyang Lee
Electrochemical And Hydrodynamic Interferences On The Performance Of An Oxygen Microsensor With Built-In Electrochemical Microactuator, Chang-Soo Kim, Chae-Hyang Lee
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An in situ self-diagnostic technique for a dissolved oxygen microsensor is proposed in an effort to devise an intelligent microsensor system with an integrated electro-chemical actuation electrode. With a built-in platinum microelectrode that surrounds the microsensor, two kinds of microenvironments (oxygen-saturated or oxygen-depleted phases) can be created by water electrolysis depending on the polarity. The functionality of the microsensor can be checked during these microenvironment phases. The polarographic oxygen microsensor is fabricated on a flexible polyimide substrate (Kapton/sup ©/) and the influences of electrochemical and hydrodynamic conditions on the sensor responses have been investigated.
Evolving Digital Circuits Using Particle Swarm, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Venu Gopal Gudise
Evolving Digital Circuits Using Particle Swarm, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Venu Gopal Gudise
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Particle swarm optimization (PSO) motivated by the social behavior of organisms is proposed for evolution of combinational logic circuits. Results are presented to show that PSO based evolution of digital circuits are equivalent to or even with better solutions (with minimum number of logic gates) than that of a human designer and other genetic algorithm (GA) based techniques. This PSO based approach converges faster than other approaches reported in literature using genetic algorithms and as a result the computational intensity involved in hardware evolution is reduced. Examples taken from the literature are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed …

Judicial Activism Of The Shari'ah Appeals Court In Israel (1994 - 2001): Rise And Crisis, Dr. Moussa Abou Ramadan
Fordham International Law Journal
The main thesis of this Article is that after 1994, with the nomination of new qadis to the Shari‘ah Court, a process of judicial activism began, which continues until this day. This process has been characterized by the qadis' attempts to strengthen the position of the Shari‘ah Appeals Court. In some fields the qadis' activism has been more successful than in others. Recently however, it seems that the Shari‘ah system is undergoing a crisis. The author will analyze the actions of the Shari‘ah Appeals Court on several parallel levels: (1) the strengthening of its position compared with those of the …
Martyrdom, Suicide, And The Islamic Law Of War: A Short Legal History, Bernard K. Freamon
Martyrdom, Suicide, And The Islamic Law Of War: A Short Legal History, Bernard K. Freamon
Fordham International Law Journal
This Article is concerned with one key aspect of the law of the military jihad: the Islamic concept of martyrdom [shahada or istishhad]. This Article will demonstrate that the current Islamist financing and systematic organization and direction of self-annihilatory acts of violence is only weakly supported, if at all, by the classical sources on martyrdom in Islamic law and jurisprudence. The Article will show that current justifications for self-annihilatory violence are instead the result of a major reinterpretation of the theology and religious law on martyrdom and the military jihad advanced by Shi'ite theologians and jurists in Iraq and Iran …

Enlargement Of The European Union – The Discrepancy Between Membership Obligations And Accession Conditions As Regards The Protection Of Minorities, Christophe Hillion
Enlargement Of The European Union – The Discrepancy Between Membership Obligations And Accession Conditions As Regards The Protection Of Minorities, Christophe Hillion
Fordham International Law Journal
This Article will focus on one particular accession condition that is illustrative of this phenomenon, namely, the protection of minorities. The Copenhagen criteria encompass the "respect for and protection of minorities" as one of the conditions for acceding to the Union, but the Treaty on European Union ("TEU") does not explicitly mention the protection of minorities as one of the EU's principles, objectives, or competences. It is argued that the question of minority rights could find its way onto the EU internal policy agenda not only as a concern of various new Member States, but also as an unintended consequence …
