Plant-Derived Monoterpenes Suppress Hamster Kidney Cell 3-Hydroxy-3-Methylglutaryl Coenzyme A Reductase Synthesis At The Post-Transcriptional Level, Dennis Peffley, Apurba K. Gayen Jan 2003

Plant-Derived Monoterpenes Suppress Hamster Kidney Cell 3-Hydroxy-3-Methylglutaryl Coenzyme A Reductase Synthesis At The Post-Transcriptional Level, Dennis Peffley, Apurba K. Gayen

Faculty and Staff Publications

The rate-limiting enzyme for mevalonate and cholesterol synthesis in mammalian cells is 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase. Control occurs through both transcriptional and post-transcriptional actions signaled by the end product, cholesterol, and by isoprenoid intermediates. End products of plant mevalonate metabolism, i.e., plant-derived isoprenoids, also suppress mammalian HMG-CoA reductase. Previous studies reported that isoprenoids suppress reductase synthesis at a post-transcriptional level. We tested the hypothesis that plant-derived isoprenoids also regulate mammalian HMG-CoA reductase synthesis at a post-transcriptional level by incubating lovastatin-treated C100 cells with mevalonate or a plant-derived isoprenoid (the monoterpenes, limonene, perillyl alcohol or geraniol) either alone or combined with the …

Proposed Legislation On Judicial Election Campaign Finance, Roy A. Schotland Jan 2003

Proposed Legislation On Judicial Election Campaign Finance, Roy A. Schotland

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In light of the recent extraordinary rise in judicial campaign spending, illustrated in Ohio's 2000 judicial elections (and elsewhere, and in Ohio again in 2002), we must consider improving the Model Code of Judicial Conduct. The 1999 amendments to the Code addressed campaign finance, but did not address two major problems. The first one is the absence of limits on aggregate contributions from law firms; only Texas has such limits. This gap allows large contributions from law firms to go to judges presiding in cases in which those firms participate, circumventing the recusal and disqualification triggers. The second problem is …

Tribute To Harold Jacobson, John H. Jackson

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Harold Jacobson was not only a fine scholar and excellent teacher who devoted a career to the University of Michigan, but he was also a very trusted colleague and a close friend. His scholarly work was very well recognized and admired. He was one of my colleagues while I taught at Michigan, to whom I willingly recommended students for a multidisciplinary approach to international relations. He was a theorist of political science and international relations who was willing and able to come to grips with the role of law in those fields.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration With Jake, Edith Brown Weiss

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Jake and I were professional colleagues and friends for more than twenty years, but it was in the last fifteen years that we worked closely together, bridging the supposed divide between political science and international law. Sometimes we worked together in the American Society of International Law, other times in the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), or in the Human Dimensions of Global Change program. Most often, we worked together as scholars in interdisciplinary research.

Pushing Drugs: Genomics And Genetics, The Pharmaceutical Industry, And The Law Of Negligence, Heidi Li Feldman Jan 2003

Pushing Drugs: Genomics And Genetics, The Pharmaceutical Industry, And The Law Of Negligence, Heidi Li Feldman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article presents a piece of a larger, ongoing project on the phenomenon of market-driven manufacturing (MDM) and how tort law should address it. In contrast to the larger project, this article provides a relatively brief overview of the general phenomenon of MDM, but zeros in on how pharmaceutical manufacturers specifically practice MDM. MDM is a well-documented, much practiced activity, although American courts do not recognize MDM as a discrete category of conduct. The basic idea of MDM is that marketing considerations should continuously control every aspect and stage of a product's lifecycle. When a company engages in MDM, it …

Software Project Management: The Role Of Modeling, Omar F. El-Gayar, Sreedhar Thota

Research & Publications

With the ubiquity of software and in the quest towards improving software development activities, the software engineering research community engaged in an active research agenda on modeling software processes. The modeling objectives ranged from process understanding, improvement, and management, to project management. In spite of the significant achievements in the field, few (if any) of the research results are adopted by the industry. This paper presents a brief review and a critical evaluation of the status of software process modeling practices with particular emphasis on their applications to project management from a practitioner's point of view as well as recommendations …

Congenital Acinar Dysplasia. Familial Cause Of A Fatal Respiratory Failure In A Neonate, Kefah A. Al-Senan, Abdulhakiem K. Kattan, Fouad H. Al-Dayel

Saudi Medical Journal

Pulmonary hypoplasia is a rare cause of pulmonary insufficiency, and has a significant rate of morbidity and mortality among affected infants. In most cases, pulmonary hypoplasia is secondary to underlying abnormalities. These may include space occupying lesions, as in infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia; malformation of chest wall resulting in a small thoracic cavity; severe and prolonged oligohydramnios; and neuromuscular disorders, which prevent normal fetal chest expansion. All lead to poor lung development. Primary pulmonary hypoplasia as a result of congenital acinar dysplasia is exceedingly rare and is diagnosed by exclusion of all known etiologies of secondary pulmonary hypoplasia.

Shareholder Value And Auditor Independence, William Wilson Bratton Jan 2003

Shareholder Value And Auditor Independence, William Wilson Bratton

Articles

This Article questions the practice of framing problems concerning auditors' professional responsibility inside a principal-agent paradigm. If professional independence is to be achieved, auditors cannot be enmeshed in agency relationships with the shareholders of their audit clients. As agents, the auditors by definition become subject to the principal's control and cannot act independently. For the same reason, auditors' duties should be neither articulated in the framework of corporate law fiduciary duty, nor conceived relationally at all. These assertions follow from an inquiry into the operative notion of the shareholder-beneficiary. The Article unpacks the notion of the shareholder and tells a …
