Ancient Maize From Chacoan Great Houses: Where Was It Grown?, Larry Benson, Linda Cordell, Kirk Vincent, Howard E. Taylor, John Stein, G. Lang Farmer, U.S. Geological Survey

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

In this article, we compare chemical (87Sr/86Sr and elemental) analyses of archaeological maize from dated contexts within Pueblo Bonito, Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, to potential agricultural sites on the periphery of the San Juan Basin. The oldest maize analyzed from Pueblo Bonito probably was grown in an area located 80 km to the west at the base of the Chuska Mountains. The youngest maize came from the San Juan or Animas river floodplains 90 km to the north. This article demonstrates that maize, a dietary staple of southwestern Native Americans, was transported over considerable distances in …

A Probability-Based Similarity Measure For Saupe Alignment Tensors With Applications To Residual Dipolar Couplings In Nmr Structural Biology, Anthony K. Yan, Christopher J. Langmead, Bruce Randall Donald Oct 2003

A Probability-Based Similarity Measure For Saupe Alignment Tensors With Applications To Residual Dipolar Couplings In Nmr Structural Biology, Anthony K. Yan, Christopher J. Langmead, Bruce Randall Donald

Computer Science Technical Reports

High-throughput NMR structural biology and NMR structural genomics pose a fascinating set of geometric challenges. A key bottleneck in NMR structural biology is the resonance assignment problem. We seek to accelerate protein NMR resonance assignment and structure determination by exploiting a priori structural information. In particular, a method known as Nuclear Vector Replacement (NVR) has been proposed as a method for solving the assignment problem given a priori structural information [24,25]. Among several different kinds of input data, NVR uses a particular type of NMR data known as residual dipolar couplings (RDCs). The basic physics of residual dipolar couplings tells …

Dynamics Underlying Fully Differential Cross Sections For Fast C⁶⁺ + He Collisions, Ronald E. Olson, J. Fiol Oct 2003

Dynamics Underlying Fully Differential Cross Sections For Fast C⁶⁺ + He Collisions, Ronald E. Olson, J. Fiol

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Single ionization of helium by impact of 100 MeV u-1 C6+ ions is investigated using the three-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. Fully differential cross section calculations are compared to recently published data for ionized electrons emitted both in the scattering plane, and in the plane perpendicular to it that contains the initial velocity. the present calculations show good agreement with the experimental data, and improve upon continuum-distorted-wave results. the collision mechanisms that lead to the different structures observed in the fully differential cross sections are investigated and include those of the binary and recoil peaks for in-plane …

Black Women Leaders: The Value Of Being In A Mentoring Relationship, Sara B. Masters Oct 2003

Black Women Leaders: The Value Of Being In A Mentoring Relationship, Sara B. Masters

Theses and Graduate Projects

The intent of this research is to find out more about black women leaders and mentoring. It is clear that black women are underrepresented in leadership positions in this country and in the Twin Cities metro area. To increase the number of black women in leadership roles, it is important to find out from those who have succeeded, how they did it. Mentoring has been identified as an effective means of leadership development in organizations. There has been very little research done specifically on black women who have been mentored and how these relationships have contributed to their career success. …

Earth Sciences

We characterize the chemical composition of Asian continental outflow observed during the NASA Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE-P) mission during February–April 2001 in the western Pacific using data collected on the NASA DC-8 aircraft. A significant anthropogenic impact was present in the free troposphere and as far east as 150°E longitude reflecting rapid uplift and transport of continental emissions. Five-day backward trajectories were utilized to identify five principal Asian source regions of outflow: central, coastal, north-northwest (NNW), southeast (SE), and west-southwest (WSW). The maximum mixing ratios for several species, such as CO, C2Cl4, …

Earth Sciences

Large-scale measurements of ozone (O3) and aerosol distributions were made from the NASA DC-8 aircraft during the Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE-P) field experiment conducted in February–April 2001. Remote measurements were made with an airborne lidar to provide O3 and multiple-wavelength aerosol backscatter profiles from near the surface to above the tropopause along the flight track. In situ measurements of O3, aerosols, and a wide range of trace gases were made onboard the DC-8. Five-day backward trajectories were used in conjunction with the O3 and aerosol distributions on each flight to …

Talbot, Jack E. Dibb

Earth Sciences

The NASA DC-8 and P-3B aircraft flew within about a kilometer or less of each other on three occasions during the Transport and Chemical Evolution Over the Pacific (TRACE-P) campaign in order to intercompare similar measurements on the two aircraft. The first and last intercomparisons were in relatively remote marine environments during transits to and from Asia. The first began with a boundary layer measurement followed by an ascent to 3 km. The second set of intercomparisons was at a fixed altitude of about 5.2 km off the coast of Japan, also in relatively clean air. Finally, the third measurement …

Earth Sciences

We present here results for reactive nitrogen species measured aboard the NASA DC-8 aircraft during the Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE-P) mission. The large-scale distributions total reactive nitrogen (NOy,sum = NO + NO2 + HNO3 + PAN + C1–C5alkyl nitrates) and O3 and CO were better defined in the boundary layer with significant degradation of the relationships as altitude increased. Typically, NOy,sum was enhanced over background levels of ∼260 pptv by 20-to-30-fold. The ratio C2H2/CO had values of 1–4 at altitudes up to 10 …

Congruence Among Mathematics Skills Used On The Job By Practical Nurses Vs. The Prerequisite Skills Required For Admission Into The Practical Nursing Program, G H. Clary Oct 2003

Congruence Among Mathematics Skills Used On The Job By Practical Nurses Vs. The Prerequisite Skills Required For Admission Into The Practical Nursing Program, G H. Clary

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The standard for evaluating a student's mathematic ability (grade level) for admission to many vocational-technical programs is through the administration of the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE). There has come forth a concern from vocational educators, that students entering programs may not be prepared for the mathematics required by the curriculum, even though the student has met the criteria for entry as established by the state curriculum frameworks as evidenced by their scores on a TABE which had recently been administered. Furthermore, questions raised among instructional, administrative and guidance personnel about the congruence of math skills required on the …
