Design And Analysis Of Cylindrical Antiresonant Reflecting Optical Waveguide, Chyng Wen Tee, S. F. Yu Dec 2003

Design And Analysis Of Cylindrical Antiresonant Reflecting Optical Waveguide, Chyng Wen Tee, S. F. Yu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A field-transfer matrix method is developed to analyze the modal characteristics of cylindrical multilayered waveguides with axis-symmetric geometry. A new design rule for cylindrical antiresonant reflecting optical waveguides (ARROWs), based on a three-step design process, is also proposed to minimize the radiation loss of the fundamental leaky mode. In addition, a simple approach is suggested to estimate the optimum core diameter of the cylindrical ARROWs for optimum radiation loss and radiation loss margin. Hence, it can be shown that an extra high index cladding layer is good enough to reduce the radiation loss as well as to maintain a reasonably …

Internal Phosphorus Loading In Spring Lake: Year 1, Dr. Alan Steinman, Dr. Rick Rediske Dec 2003

Internal Phosphorus Loading In Spring Lake: Year 1, Dr. Alan Steinman, Dr. Rick Rediske

Scientific Technical Reports

The rate of phosphorus release from sediments, and the degree to which alum reduces phosphorus release from sediments, was investigated in Spring Lake during the summer of 2003. Triplicate cores were sampled from 4 sites in the lake, and exposed to one of four treatments in the laboratory: 1) oxygen/alum; 2) oxygen/ no alum; 3) nitrogen/alum; or 4) nitrogen/no alum. Both soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and total phosphorus (TP) release rates were virtually undetectable in the alum treatments (both with and without oxygen). Low, but detectable, release rates were measured in the oxygen/no alum treatment. The highest release rates were …

A Robust Two-Sample Procedure To Estimate A Shift Parameter, Feridun Tasdan Dec 2003

A Robust Two-Sample Procedure To Estimate A Shift Parameter, Feridun Tasdan

Dissertations

This study estimates the location shift parameter in the two-sample problem. The classical method, Least Square(LS), obtains the shift parameter estimate under the normality assumption. A departure from normality assumption makes the estimate inefficient and unreliable. One alternative to the least square estimate is Hodges-Lehmann (HL) estimate which uses Wilcoxon ranks to estimate the shift parameter. This estimate is robust against contaminations and large outliers. The proposed method in this study combines two samples and uses convolution technique to find a density function for the combined sample. This new density function is later used in the construction of the log …

Culture And The Effectiveness Of Supplier Diversity Programs: A Test Of Predictors, Gwendolyn Whitfield Dec 2003

Culture And The Effectiveness Of Supplier Diversity Programs: A Test Of Predictors, Gwendolyn Whitfield

Dissertations

Increased globalization and diversity has brought with it unique interdependencies. As we experience demographical shifts unlike any other in U.S. history, the growth rate of minority-owned businesses may represent unprecedented opportunity for corporate buyers to partner with minority suppliers. According to the Minority Business Development Agency, the minority population will represent 37.4 percent of the total U.S. population by the year 2020, and will yield purchasing power of $3 trillion. Moreover, it is estimated that between the years 2000 and 2050 the majority of new business starts will originate in the minority business community (U.S. Small Business Administration 1994). Minority-owned …

Measurement Of Conductivity And Charge Storage In Insulators Related To Spacecraft Charging, A. R. Frederickson, John R. Dennison Dec 2003

Measurement Of Conductivity And Charge Storage In Insulators Related To Spacecraft Charging, A. R. Frederickson, John R. Dennison

All Physics Faculty Publications

Improved experimental methods are discussed for laboratory measurement of conductivity and electric field in insulating spacecraft material intended for space radiation and plasma environments. These measurement techniques investigate the following features: 1) measurements of conductivity are up to four orders of magnitude smaller than those determined by existing standard methods. 2) Conductivity is altered as radiation accumulates and trapping states fill with electrons. 3) With intense kiloelectronvolt electron irradiation, electrons are continually emitted for hours from the irradiated surface after the irradiation ceases. 4) Charging induced by electron irradiation is strongly modified by the electron-hole pairs that the irradiation generates …

Pyro: A Python-Based Versatile Programming Environment For Teaching Robotics, D. Blank, D. Kumar, Lisa A. Meeden, H. Yanco

Computer Science Faculty Works

In this article we describe a programming framework called Pyro, which provides a set of abstractions that allows students to write platform-independent robot programs. This project is unique because of its focus on the pedagogical implications of teaching mobile robotics via a top-down approach. We describe the background of the project, its novel abstractions, its library of objects, and the many learning modules that have been created from which curricula for different types of courses can be drawn. Finally, we explore Pyro from the students' perspective in a case study.

Electrostatics Of Nanowire Transistors, Jing Guo, Jing Wang, E. Polizzi, Supriyo Datta, Mark S. Lundstrom Dec 2003

Electrostatics Of Nanowire Transistors, Jing Guo, Jing Wang, E. Polizzi, Supriyo Datta, Mark S. Lundstrom

Other Nanotechnology Publications

The electrostatics of nanowire transistors are studied by solving the Poisson equation self-consistently with the equilibrium carrier statistics of the nanowire. For a one-dimensional, intrinsic nanowire channel, charge transfer from the metal contacts is important. We examine how the charge transfer depends on the insulator and the metal/semiconductor Schottky barrier height. We also show that charge density on the nanowire is a sensitive function of the contact geometry. For a nanowire transistor with large gate underlaps, charge transferred from bulk electrodes can effectively "dope" the intrinsic, ungated region and allow the transistor to operate. Reducing the gate oxide thickness and …

Enabling Computer Decisions Based On Eeg Input, Benjamin J. Culpepper, Robert M. Keller Dec 2003

Enabling Computer Decisions Based On Eeg Input, Benjamin J. Culpepper, Robert M. Keller

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Multilayer neural networks were successfully trained to classify segments of 12-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) data into one of five classes corresponding to five cognitive tasks performed by a subject. Independent component analysis (ICA) was used to segregate obvious artifact EEG components from other sources, and a frequency-band representation was used to represent the sources computed by ICA. Examples of results include an 85% accuracy rate on differentiation between two tasks, using a segment of EEG only 0.05 s long and a 95% accuracy rate using a 0.5-s-long segment.

Effect Of Crucible Diameter Reduction On The Convection, Macrosegregation, And Dendritic Morphology During Directional Solidification Of Pb-2.2 Wt Pct Sb Alloy, Jun Chen, Surendra N. Tewari, G. Magadi, H. C. Degroh Iii Dec 2003

Effect Of Crucible Diameter Reduction On The Convection, Macrosegregation, And Dendritic Morphology During Directional Solidification Of Pb-2.2 Wt Pct Sb Alloy, Jun Chen, Surendra N. Tewari, G. Magadi, H. C. Degroh Iii

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The Pb-2.2 wt pct Sb alloy has been directionally solidified in 1, 2-, 3-, and 7-mm-diameter crucibles with planar and dendritic liquid-solid interface morphology. For plane front solidification, the experimentally observed macrosegregation along the solidified length follows the relationship proposed by Favier.([17,18]) Application of a 0.4 T transverse magnetic field has no effect on the extent of convection. Reducing the ampoule diameter appears to decrease the extent of convection. However, extensive convection is still present even in the 1-mm-diameter crucible. An extrapolation of the observed behavior indicates that nearly diffusive transport conditions require ampoules that are about 40 mum in …

Assessing The Benefits Of Misting-Cooling Systems For Growing-Finishing Swine In Kentucky As Affected By Environment And Pig Placement Date, Thomas C. Bridges, R. S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, Larry W. Turner Dec 2003

Assessing The Benefits Of Misting-Cooling Systems For Growing-Finishing Swine In Kentucky As Affected By Environment And Pig Placement Date, Thomas C. Bridges, R. S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, Larry W. Turner

Agricultural Engineering Extension Publications

The growth performance of animals is often affected by extreme environmental conditions. In the case of swine, generally a cold environment will increase feed intake as the pig strives to maintain body temperature, while warmer environments may reduce growth, increase body maintenance demands, and subject the animal to environmental stress. Confinement houses are widely used as a primary means of modifying the environment to improve conditions for the growth of swine. Environment in these structures is usually controlled by natural or mechanical ventilation and by insulation for cold climates and limited use of evaporative cooling for summertime conditions.
