Computer Simulation For The Optimization Of Reverse Osmosis Seawater Desalination Pretreatment, Brieuc. Corlay Jan 2003

Computer Simulation For The Optimization Of Reverse Osmosis Seawater Desalination Pretreatment, Brieuc. Corlay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A computer program was developed to simulate and optimize the chemical pretreatment of seawater prior to desalination by reverse osmosis. The model was created using LabViewRTM programming language. The automation of the process was achieved using a PID (proportional, integrative, derivative) controller. The effects of a variety of operating conditions were modeled to optimize the chemical pretreatment. We focused on three parameters: hardness removal, iron removal and control of biogrowth. The validity of the model was verified with laboratory scale experiments. In the range of the model, the predicted values differ by a maximum of 11% from experimental results.

Concept Of Time In "2001: A Space Odyssey", Rishi S. Ramnath Jan 2003

Concept Of Time In "2001: A Space Odyssey", Rishi S. Ramnath

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The concept of time in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey is examined from social, biological, psychological, and spiritual perspectives. In Arthur C. Clarke's novel, his version of the film, he treats the nature of time as a cyclical process. He eventually explains that the notion of physical time is non-existent or an impermanent illusion. While Clarke's novel interprets time, the film projects and manipulates the nature of space and time, which spectators may experience as reality. Time's direction can be viewed or experienced as a cycle from an Eastern philosophical perspective. However, a Western interpretation requires a …

Construction Of Mini Collagen Ligands Recognized By Alpha2beta1 Integrin And Cd44/Cspg Melanoma Receptors: New Method For The Study Of Signaling Pathways, Mohammad A. Al-Ghoul Jan 2003

Construction Of Mini Collagen Ligands Recognized By Alpha2beta1 Integrin And Cd44/Cspg Melanoma Receptors: New Method For The Study Of Signaling Pathways, Mohammad A. Al-Ghoul

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The metastatic process involves tumor cell adhesion to basement membrane components, such as type IV collagen. A specific mitogen activated protein kinase cascade is activated by cell adhesion to type IV collagen. This activation causes the expression of proteolytic enzymes. These enzymes will then participate in compromising extracellular matrix components and enhance cell movement through them. To better understand tumor invasion of type IV collagen, we have constructed triple-helical peptide (THP) ligands for melanoma cell receptors, and used these ligands to determine if receptors such as CD44/CSPG and the alpha2beta1 integrin have unique matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) signaling pathways affected by …

Comparisons Of Education Majors' Perception Of Aging, Sara. Marvin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not differences exist between perceptions regarding aging and the realities of aging between graduate and undergraduate education students within the College of Education at Florida Atlantic University. Data was gathered from 143 undergraduate and graduate students who were enrolled in various majors in the College of Education, on the Boca Raton and Davie campuses during the Spring 2002 semester. The Aging, Learning and Work Quiz (Galbraith and Venable, 1985), was the inventory that was utilized. It has six subscales: Biology, Psychology, Learning, Decision-Making, Work Performance and Health. Six hypotheses were …

Count Models For Software Quality Estimation, Kehan Gao Jan 2003

Count Models For Software Quality Estimation, Kehan Gao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The primary aim of software engineering is to produce quality software that is delivered on time, within budget, and fulfils all its requirements. A timely estimation of software quality can serve as a prerequisite in achieving high reliability of software-based systems. More specifically, software quality assurance efforts can be prioritized for targeting program modules that are most likely to have a high number of faults. Software quality estimation models are generally of two types: a classification model that predicts the class membership of modules into two or more quality-based classes, and a quantitative prediction model that estimates the number of …

Content And Textual Analysis Of The "Bbc World News" And "Cnn Headline News" Online Services: Frames And News Sources In Coverage Of The Second Palestinian Intifada, Tuhami Hanadi S El Jan 2003

Content And Textual Analysis Of The "Bbc World News" And "Cnn Headline News" Online Services: Frames And News Sources In Coverage Of The Second Palestinian Intifada, Tuhami Hanadi S El

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Through content and textual analysis, the thesis compares coverage of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the BBC World News and CNN Headline News online services in terms of source selection patterns and framing. The study concluded that both the publicly owned BBC and its commercial counterpart, CNN, perpetuated hegemony by limiting the range of opinions and ideas regarding the conflict. Although both news organizations showed signs of being independent from their respective governments' official perspectives regarding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, they indirectly assisted in maintaining the status quo, U.S. hegemony, by narrowing the news source list and focusing on the more sensationalistic …

Do Investors Attach Higher Valuation Weights To Cash Flow-Based Measures Than To Accrual-Based Measures In Valuing Intangible-Intensive, High-Technology Stocks?, Abdullah D. Al-Harbi Jan 2003

Do Investors Attach Higher Valuation Weights To Cash Flow-Based Measures Than To Accrual-Based Measures In Valuing Intangible-Intensive, High-Technology Stocks?, Abdullah D. Al-Harbi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study provides empirical evidence on the impact of high-tech firms' unrecognized intangible investments on the market valuation of cash flow and accrual amounts. In particular, this study empirically examines the different valuation weights that capital market participants attach to accrual-based versus cash flow-based measures when valuing intangible-intensive, high-technology stocks, and finds that investors appear to value, on average, a dollar of cash flows higher than a dollar of accruals for intangible-intensive high-technology firms. Based on samples of Compustat high- and low-technology firms between 1992--2001, the empirical results suggest that cash flows have larger multiplier than aggregate accruals, and have …

The Monumental Legacy Of The Antiquities Act Of 1906, Mark Squillace Jan 2003

The Monumental Legacy Of The Antiquities Act Of 1906, Mark Squillace

Publications

The Antiquities Act of 1906 authorizes the President of the United States "to declare by public proclamation, historic landmarks, historic and prehistoric structures, and other objects of historic or scientific interest that are situated upon [federal] lands . . . to be national monuments . . . " The law was passed during the Theodore Roosevelt administration, and Roosevelt quickly set about designating a wide range of lands and resources as national monuments, including notably, the 800,000 acre Grand Canyon National Monument. Roosevelt's expansive interpretation of the law was embraced by later presidents and ultimately by the Supreme Court. In …

Trust, Guilt, And Securities Regulation, Peter H. Huang Jan 2003

Trust, Guilt, And Securities Regulation, Peter H. Huang

Publications

This Article analyzes the importance of trust in securities investing and how guilt about breaching such trust has implications for securities regulation. Both U.S. federal securities laws and the regulations of the National Association of Securities Dealers impose high standards of professional conduct upon securities professionals. But exactly what are and should be the legal responsibilities of securities professionals remain the subject of much debate. In particular, courts disagree over when broker-dealers are fiduciaries of their clients. A legal consequence of a fiduciary relationship is a duty of fair dealing. This Article is the first to analyze the emotional, moral, …

Victim Wrongs: The Case For A General Criminal Defense Based On Wrongful Victim Behavior In An Era Of Victims' Rights, Aya Gruber Jan 2003

Victim Wrongs: The Case For A General Criminal Defense Based On Wrongful Victim Behavior In An Era Of Victims' Rights, Aya Gruber

Publications

Criminal law scholarship is rife with analysis of the victims' rights movement. Many articles identify with the outrage of victims harmed by deviant criminal elements. Other scholarly pieces criticize the movement's denuding of defendants' constitutional trial rights. The point upon which proponents and opponents of the movement tend to agree, however, is that the victim should never be blamed for the crime. The helpless, harmed, innocent victim is someone with whom we can all identify and someone to whom we can all express sympathy. Victim blaming, by all accounts, is an act of legal heresy to feminists, victim advocates, and …

Homicide On Holiday: Prosecutorial Discretion, Popular Culture, And The Boundaries Of The Criminal Law, Carolyn B. Ramsey

Publications

This article discusses prosecutors' discretion to press criminal charges against individuals who cause death during recreational activities. Based on newspaper sources, published opinions, and unpublished materials from cases that resulted in plea bargains, Homicide on Holiday continues the author's exploration of the relationship between the American public, criminal prosecutors, and the nature of the prosecutors' public role. It shows that, despite popular culture's glorification of risk and a nationwide trend in tort law toward sheltering sports co-participants from civil negligence liability, an exhilarating trip down a ski slope is increasingly likely to land a skier in jail if he collides …

Marbury V. Madison And Modern Judicial Review, Robert F. Nagel Jan 2003

Marbury V. Madison And Modern Judicial Review, Robert F. Nagel

Publications

This Article compares the realist critique of Marbury with several revisionist defenses of that decision. Realists claim to see Marbury as essentially political and thus as the fountainhead of modern judicial review. Revisionists claim to see the decision as legalistically justified and thus inconsistent with current practices. Close examination, however, indicates that, despite sharp rhetorical differences, these two accounts are largely complementary rather than inconsistent. Each envisions Marbury as embodying elements of both political realism and legal formalism. Once the false argument about whether Marbury was either political or legal is put aside, it is possible to trace the influence …

Citizenship And Severity: Recent Immigration Reforms And The New Penology, Teresa A. Miller Jan 2003

Citizenship And Severity: Recent Immigration Reforms And The New Penology, Teresa A. Miller

Journal Articles

Over the past twenty years, scholars of criminal law, criminology and criminal punishment have documented a transformation in the practices, objectives, and institutional arrangements underlying a range of criminal justice system functions that are at the heart of penal modernism. In contrast to the preceding eighty years of criminal justice practices that were progressively more modern in their belief in the rationality of the criminal offender and their concern for enhancing civilization through rehabilitative responses to criminality, these scholars note that since the mid-198''0s the relatively settled assumptions about the framework that shaped criminal justice and penal practices for nearly …

Symposium: Client Counseling And Moral Responsibility, Thomas L. Shaffer, Deborah L. Rhode, Paul R. Tremblay, Robert F. Cochran

Journal Articles

One of the most important challenges to lawyers and clients is addressing issues that are not controlled by law. Will the client take steps (legal steps) that will harm other people? Will the officers of a corporation consider the effects of its actions on workers, on consumers, on the community, on the environment? In a divorce, will the client take actions that will harm a child or spouse? What role should the lawyer play regarding these questions? The way lawyers address such issues may do more to determine whether their practice is socially useful or socially harmful than any rule …

Cultural Change And "Catholic Lawyers", Stephen F. Smith Jan 2003

Cultural Change And "Catholic Lawyers", Stephen F. Smith

Journal Articles

If there is anything that America definitely does not need, it would seem, it is more lawyers. Over the last thirty years or so, the number of lawyers practicing in the United States has almost tripled to current levels of roughly 900,000 practicing attorneys. To this number, our nation's law schools add another 35,000 attorneys annually. In spite of this, the purpose of this special inaugural law review issue is to commemorate the founding of a new school, the Ave Maria School of Law. It is an honor for me to be able to share in the joy and pride …
