Phenotype Of The Triplo-Lethal Locus Of Drosophila Melanogaster And Its Suppression By Hyperoxia, Laura K. Smoyer, Douglas R. Dorer, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Alan C. Christensen

The Triplo-lethal locus (Tpl) of Drosophila is both triplo-lethal and haploinsufficient, but the function of the locus is unknown. We have examined Tpl-aneuploid embryos and find that, in both trisomics and monosomics, the midgut shows extensive cell death and the tracheae are abnormal. Shortly thereafter, all tissues die. PCR-based genotyping of individual embryos and larvae show that this phenotype occurs in the trisomics after hatching and in the monosomics before hatching. Weak alleles of the interacting gene Su(Tpl) delay the death of Tpl trisomics, but they still show the same tracheal and midgut phenotypes before dying. Hyperoxia (45% oxygen) …

Throughout the later half of the century air pollution and its effects on the environment and human health has emerged as a focus of regulatory action at the federal and state level. This report will examine the effect that federal air quality legislation has had on regional air quality management through transportation control measures (TCMs). Federal transportation control measures (TCMs) are a transportation-planning tool for controlling regional air quality. TCMs are a means to control traffic congestion on streets and highways and to reduce the total amount of vehicle miles traveled (VMT), therefore reducing motor vehicle emissions and improving air …

Many antidiscrimination statutes limit speech by employers, landlords, lenders, and other decisionmakers in one or both of two ways: (1) by prohibiting queries soliciting information about an applicant's disability, sexual orientation, marital status, or other protected characteristic; and (2) by proscribing discriminatory advertisements or other expressions of discriminatory preference for applicants based on race, sex, age, sexual orientation, or other protected characteristics.

This Article explores how we might think about these laws for First Amendment purposes. Part I outlines the range of civil rights restrictions on decisionmaker speech, while Part II identifies the antidiscrimination and privacy concerns that drive their …

Patenting Computer Data Structures: The Ghost, The Machine And The Federal Circuit, Andrew Joseph Hollander

Courts view "data structures," the mechanism by which computers store data in meaningful relationships, differently than do computer scientists. While computer scientists recognize that data structures have aspects that are both physical (how they are stored in memory) and logical (the relationships among the stored information), the Federal Circuit, in its attempts to set clear standards of the scope of patentability of data structures, has not fully appreciated their dualistic nature. This i-brief explains what data structures are, explores how courts have wrestled with setting a limiting principle to determine their patentability, and discusses the resultant impact on claim drafting.

Ceiling fan blades for maximizing air flow at operational speeds of up to approximately 200 revolutions per minute(rpm). The blades have a positive twist at the tip ends of approximately 5 degrees to approximately 10 degrees parallel to the ceiling. The root end of the blades closest to the motor can have a positive twist exceeding that of the tip end and can be approximately 20 to approximately 35 degrees parallel to the ceiling. From Schweizerhalle To Baia Mare: The Continuing Failure Of International Law To Protect Europe's Rivers, Aaron Schwabach

Beginning on January 31, 2000, at least 100,000 cubic meters of highly polluted water escaped from a tailings dam at the Aurul gold mine in Baia Mare, Romania. The water flowed into the Somes, Tisza, and Danube Rivers, causing enormous environmental damage. Most of the damage occurred in Hungary, downstream from Baia Mare. Hungarian politicians called the spill “the first, most serious environment[al] catastrophe in the 21st century,” and “the worst ecological disaster in central Europe since Chernobyl in 1986.”
