Booze, Drugs, And Rock & Roll: Crime During The College Years, Paul S. Gutman

ExpressO

In this Article, the author examines the predilection of college and university students towards certain types of illegal behaviors. Specifically, the Article considers the widespread instances of drug use, under-age alcohol use, and "file-sharing" using Napster and its progeny. The Article's main focus is on why such illegal behaviors are rampant among college students who might otherwise be

[1] We examined how adsorption and desorption of gases from inlets and a cell could affect the accuracy of closed-cell FTIR measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), methanol (CH3OH), acetic acid (CH3COOH), and ammonia (NH3). When standards were delivered to the cell through a stainless steel inlet, temporarily reduced transmission was observed for CH3OH and NH3. However, a halocarbon wax coated inlet (normally used on the system) had excellent transmission (comparable to room temperature …

Are Biotech Crops And Conventional Crops Like Products? An Analysis Under Gatt, Julian Wong Oct 2003

Are Biotech Crops And Conventional Crops Like Products? An Analysis Under Gatt, Julian Wong

Duke Law & Technology Review

The transatlantic debate over the use of genetically modified organisms ("GMO"s) as food products, with the US as a proponent on one side, and the European Union ("EU") as an opponent on the other, is set to take center stage. The US has initiated formal legal action under the World Trade Organization Dispute Settlement System, charging that the EU violates several agreements of international trade law, including Article III of GATT, an anti-protectionist measure which forbids a country from favoring its own products over imported "like products." The US claims that GMOs and conventional crops are "like products,, and that …

Crystal Engineering Of Binary Compounds Containing Pharmaceutical Molecules, Leslie Ann Morales Oct 2003

Crystal Engineering Of Binary Compounds Containing Pharmaceutical Molecules, Leslie Ann Morales

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The synthesis or the interaction between two or more molecules is known as supramolecular chemistry. The concept of supramolecular chemistry can be applied to the design of new pharmaceutical materials affording new compositions of matter with desirable composition, structure and properties.

The design of a two-molecule, or binary, compound using complementary molecules represents an example of an application of crystal engineering. Crystal engineering is the understanding of intermolecular interactions, in the context of crystal packing, in the design of new solid materials. By identifying reliable connectors through molecular recognition or self-assembly, one can build predictable architectures.

The study of supramolecular …

Hierarchical Bivariate Time Series Models: A Combined Analysis Of The Effects Of Particulate Matter On Morbidity And Mortality, Francesca Dominici, Antonella Zanobetti, Scott L. Zeger, Joel Schwartz, Jonathan M. Samet Oct 2003

Samet

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In this paper we develop a hierarchical bivariate time series model to characterize the relationship between particulate matter less than 10 microns in aerodynamic diameter (PM10) and both mortality and hospital admissions for cardiovascular diseases. The model is applied to time series data on mortality and morbidity for 10 metropolitan areas in the United States from 1986 to 1993. We postulate that these time series should be related through a shared relationship with PM10.

At the first stage of the hierarchy, we fit two seemingly unrelated Poisson regression models to produce city-specific estimates of the log relative rates of mortality …

Alu elements have inserted in primate genomes throughout the evolution of the order. One particular Alu lineage (Ye) began amplifying relatively early in hominid evolution and continued propagating at a low level as many of its members are found in a variety of hominid genomes. This study represents the first conclusive application of short interspersed elements, which are considered nearly homoplasy-free, to elucidate the phylogeny of hominids. Phylogenetic analysis of Alu Ye5 elements and elements from several other subfamilies reveals high levels of support for monophyly of Hominidae, tribe Hominini and subtribe Hominina. Here we present the strongest evidence reported …

A Probability-Based Similarity Measure For Saupe Alignment Tensors With Applications To Residual Dipolar Couplings In Nmr Structural Biology, Anthony K. Yan, Christopher J. Langmead, Bruce Randall Donald

Computer Science Technical Reports

High-throughput NMR structural biology and NMR structural genomics pose a fascinating set of geometric challenges. A key bottleneck in NMR structural biology is the resonance assignment problem. We seek to accelerate protein NMR resonance assignment and structure determination by exploiting a priori structural information. In particular, a method known as Nuclear Vector Replacement (NVR) has been proposed as a method for solving the assignment problem given a priori structural information [24,25]. Among several different kinds of input data, NVR uses a particular type of NMR data known as residual dipolar couplings (RDCs). The basic physics of residual dipolar couplings tells …
