Supporting Patriarchy And Consumerism Through Sex Rhetoric: Power, Foucault And Sex And The City, Alyson Chace Arnold

As Americans seek identification through the media, Foucault's "bio-power" extends the power of patriarchy and consumerism through gender prescriptions. A study of modern sexuality discourses can show what those prescriptions are and how the current power-knowledge regimes are maintained by them. This paper focuses on the aspects of Foucault's theories on power that deal with gender and sexuality discourses, explicating the cable show Sex and the City to discuss its role in the perpetuation of the status quo of patriarchy and consumerism through gendered identities. Development of a theoretical treatment of multiple coherent light scattering in an ultracold atomic gas is reported. Specific application is made to coherent backscattering of a weak-radiation field from realistically modeled samples of ultracold atomic 85Rb. Comprehensive Monte Carlo simulations of the spatial, spectral, and polarization dependence of the backscattering line shape are made and compared with available experimental results.

Cellular automata, a class of discrete dynamical systems, show a wide range of dynamic behavior, some very complex despite the simplicity of the system's definition. This range of behavior can be organized into six classes, according to the Li-Packard system: null, fixed point, two-cycle, periodic, complex, and chaotic. An advanced method for automatically classifying cellular automata into these six classes is presented. Seven parameters were used for automatic classification, six from existing literature and one newly presented. These seven parameters were used in conjunction with neural networks to automatically classify an average of 98.3% of elementary cellular automata and 93.9% …

This study examined the impact of cultural differences on the trans-cultural application of the concept of organizational leadership. The significance of four cultural dimensions (power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism, and masculinity) (Hofstede, G., 1980) towards the concept of organizational leadership (Rost, J.C, 1991) was discussed and a survey as created to test for cultural differences from a leadership perspective. American and Croatian college students then completed the survey. Results showed cultural similarities for all cultural dimensions with the exception of uncertainty avoidance, which was found to be higher for the American sample than the Croatian. Synthesizing texture involves the ordering of pixels in a 2D arrangement so as to display certain known spatial correlations, generally as described by a sample texture. In an abstract sense, these pixels could be gray-scale values, RGB color values, or entire spectral curves. The focus of this work is to develop a practical synthesis framework that maintains this abstract view while synthesizing texture with high spectral dimension, effectively achieving spectral invariance. Novel nanocomposites of poly (3-alkylthiophenes) with functionalized MWCNT were prepared. These nanocomposites were synthesized by in-situ polymerization of the polymer in presence of the nanotubes. Nanocomposites with poly (3-MT) were synthesized by using different weight percentages of functionalized nanotubes during synthesis while those with other polymers were prepared using 30 mg of nanotubes. A nanocomposite of poly (3-MT) with nonfunctionalized nanotubes and a physical mixture of poly (3-MT) and functionalized nanotubes was also prepared. The oxidations of aromatic and aliphatic amines have been investigated to evaluate the catalytic effect of functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Aniline oxidation by hydrogen peroxide produces very low yields of azoxybenzene; similarly, p-toluidine oxidation produces azoxytoluene after long time periods. When functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes are present in these reactions, the above oxidations produced unique products such as azobenzene or azotoluene within a short period. The course of the reaction has been followed by GC/MS that showed a mass number of 198 corresponding to azoxybenzene (without carbon nanotubes) or 182 corresponding to azobenzene (with the nanotubes). Previous intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) studies have indicated significant variation in ICSI success rates among different species. In mouse ICSI, the zona pellucida (ZP) undergoes a "hardening" process at fertilization in order to prevent subsequent sperm from penetrating. There have been few studies investigating changes in the mechanical properties of mouse ZP post fertilization. This article discusses the merits of appealing rejections to the Board of Patent Appeals in comparison to continued ex parte prosecution before the Examiner. The analysis takes into account recent decisions rendered by several patent panels and recent precedent of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Recommendations are offered to place claims in better condition for appeal and for the types of arguments to be made, as well as to guard against potential pitfalls during prosecution.

Loss of bone mass is one important physiological change observed in astronauts after medium and long-term exposure to microgravity conditions. The objective of the current study is to test the hypothesis that loss of bone mass under microgravity can be inhibited if the same micro-force distribution under earth gravity (body weight) is achieved by increasing the blood vessel permeability to increase the transcortical interstitial fluid flow. A method of exposure to bio-frequency spectrum (BFS) light (infrared to micrometer wavelength) was used to increase the blood vessel permeability. This study assessed the potential of six plant species growing in the Mojave Desert, as sentinels of tritium contamination below earthen caps covering radioactive waste. The plants, grown in hydroponic tanks and 3 m columns, were evaluated for treatments representing three different levels of tritium contamination. Tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, replaces a hydrogen atom in a water molecule and readily migrates through soil. Plant roots coming into contact with soil moisture do not discriminate between tritiated water molecules and dihydrogen water molecules in the uptake process. The family Heteromyidae includes six genera of rodents traditionally placed in three subfamilies endemic to the Nearctic and northern Neotropical biogeographic regions. Although several of these taxa represent intensively studied members of North and Central American ecosystems (e.g., kangaroo rats, pocket mice), phylogenetic relationships within and among subfamilies, genera, and species-groups are poorly understood. Here, I used maximum likelihood (ML), Bayesian, and maximum parsimony (MP) analyses of sequence data from two mitochondrial DNA genes---COIII (699 bp) and cytochrome b (1140 bp)---to investigate phylogenetic relationships among 55 species-level taxa. I found robust support for monophyly of genera Dipodomys, Microdipodops, Chaetodipus, and …

This study is the continuation of a 1999 qualitative study in which the researchers examined the implementation of Local Professional Development Committees in the state of Ohio. This descriptive study examined the Individual Professional Development Plans (IPDP) of 133 teachers. Resultant data indicated that, from the wide array of possible selections for professional development (PD) including many that did not have any associated cost, thirteen different types of activities were chosen. The majority of teachers selected the traditional means of earning PD credit: university course work, inservice workshops, and conferences. Optical absorption experiments were performed using diamond-anvil cells to measure the hydrostatic pressure dependence of the fundamental bandgap of ZnSe1-xTex alloys over the entire composition range. The first- and second-order pressure coefficients were obtained as a function of composition. The coefficients do not vary linearly between the ZnSe and ZnTe end-point values. Starting from the ZnSe side, the magnitude of both coefficients increases slowly until xapproximate to0.7, which is the point where the ambient-pressure bandgap shows a minimum. At larger values of x the coefficients rapidly approach the values of ZnTe. The large deviations of the pressure coefficients from the …

We present depth-resolved coherence-domain images of living tissue using a dynamic holographic semiconductor film. An AlGaAs photorefractive quantum-well device is used in an adaptive interferometer that records coherent backscattered (image-bearing) light from inside rat osteogenic sarcoma tumor spheroids up to 1 mm in diameter in vitro. The data consist of sequential holographic image frames at successive depths through the tumor represented as a visual video "fly-through." The images from the tumor spheroids reveal heterogeneous structures presumably caused by necrosis and microcalcifications characteristic of human tumors in their early avascular growth. The parallel pixel acquisition inherent in wide-field coherence-gated imaging techniques offers the possibility of high-frame-rate imaging and volumetric imaging, including through scattering media. We discuss photorefractive holography using sensitive, dynamic photorefractive multiple quantum well (PRQW) films as a promising approach and, after reviewing the factors that determine the sensitivity of this technique, we demonstrate that high-frame-rate wide-field coherence gated imaging is possible at 830 frames per second with PRQW devices using a non-intensified camera to record the diffracted signal.

Non-contact electrostatic force microscopy techniques were used to study the open-circuit photovoltage of purple membrane multilayers electrodeposited on indium tin oxide. A humidity-dependent photovoltage response under illumination by a 635 nm photodiode was observed. Peak photovoltages in excess of 2 V at similar to36 W m(-2) were obtained for similar to15% relative humidity.

Interposed Abdominal Compression Cpr: A Comprehensive Evidence Based Review, Charles F. Babbs

Interposed abdominal compression (IAC)-CPR includes all steps of standard external CPR with the addition of manual mid-abdominal compressions in counterpoint to the rhythm of chest compressions. IAC-CPR can increase blood flow during CPR about two fold compared to standard CPR without IAC, as shown by 6 of 6 studies in computer models and 19 of 20 studies in various animal models. The addition of IAC has clinical benefit in humans, as indicated in 10 of 12 small to medium sized clinical studies. The technique increases the frequency of immediate return of spontaneous circulation for in-hospital resuscitations from roughly 25% to …
