Forestry practices may indirectly influence the ecological maintenance of zoonotic disease agents by their direct impacts on rodent community structure and the relative abundance of their associated ectoparasites. Relative abundances of three species of forest rodents and their ticks were compared among four types of stands within the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation in northwestern California, (USA). The stands were characterized by age since last harvest and silvicultural treatment. Two stand types were harvested 20 to 25 years prior to sampling while the other two stand types were harvested 35 to 40 years prior to sampling. Additionally, each age category was …

Adaptive Model Of Dom Dynamics In The Surface Ocean, Markus Pahlow, Alain F. Vézina

Journal of Marine Research

The bulk of marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) forms a large, old, refractory carbon pool in the deep ocean, yet a small fraction in the surface ocean is actively involved in the global carbon cycle and may contribute significantly to the biological pump. We argue that present models of plankton and DOM in the surface ocean are incompatible with current knowledge of marine DOM dynamics. We present a plankton model with an adaptive formulation of bacteria-DOM interactions which is more consistent with observations. Our model reproduces net accumulation of DOM and is the first to reconcile the prevailing reports of …

In January of 2000, Governor George Ryan of Illinois issued a statewide moratorium on capital punishment, citing among his reasons the fact that more convicted killers had been exonerated than executed since Illinois reinstated the death penalty in 1977. In 2001 Maryland’s governor issued a temporary moratorium on capital punishment, pending the results of a University of Maryland death penalty study. The North Carolina Senate recently approved a bill that would suspend all state executions for two years, after twenty-one North Carolina municipalities passed resolutions favoring a moratorium and two death-row inmates were awarded new trials.

A Contrast-Based Neural Control System For Ant Navigation, Joanna R. Wares, Predrag-Peter Ilich, Daniel P. Dougherty

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

A mathematical model for a neural control system of ant locomotion was developed. Contrast-based detectors using excitation and inhibition were tuned to specific contrast orientations. A control system using multiple orientation contrast detectors was then developed and optimized for a model ant, which could move via a biased random walk. The system allowed sufficient control to guide the ant through various mazes.

The National Academy of Sciences, under its 1863 congressional charter, is supposed to be dedicated to “investigate, examine, experiment, and report upon any subject of science or art whenever called upon to do so by any department of the government.” At least insofar as judging the scienti c integrity of governmental regulation of biotechnology is concerned, however, two recent “expert” committees of the National Research Council (NRC), the research arm of the Academy, have been plagued by apparent bias, and their recommendations have been dubious.

Beliefs About The Appropriate Degree Of Directiveness In The Management Relationship, As Related To Demographic Characteristics, Educational Background, And Organizational Position, Janet L. Pershing

Correlations between beliefs about management and age, gender, nationality, level of education, education field, functional area, and hierarchical level were examined. Analyses were conducted at the ecological level and focused on beliefs regarding appropriate degree of directiveness in the managerial relationship. Two thousand staff members of an international intergovernmental organization received an electronically distributed written survey. Factor analysis was used to develop summated rating scales for each independent variables. Differences between subgroup means were then examined using ANOVA or t tests. Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Ascochyta blight, caused by Ascochyta rabiei (Pass.) Lab., is the most important disease in the chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) in many countries, including Turkey. Efforts to control the disease were made using host-plant resistance as the most efficient and economical way. A total of 41 exotic genotypes were evaluated for resistance to A. rabiei and also yield and yield criteria near Antalya in the west Mediterranean region of Turkey in the 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 seasons. The September 11 attack was the largest single insured event in history. In the end, insurance companies are expected to pay approximately $50 billion to victims of the attack. In response to the perceived potential of future terrorist losses, many insurers have begun to exclude terrorist-related losses from their policies. In light of the size and uncertainty of future losses, this is understandable. In adopting this approach, however, it appears that little thought has been given to the transaction costs associated with the exclusion. One of the significant contributions of Law and Economics to legal literature has been to illuminate …

This paper seeks to show that a connection exists between President George W. Bush's rhetoric sending America into war with Iraq and the rhetoric used by President Woodrow Wilson which led to America's entrance into World War I. The paper is broken into two major sections: the first is an analysis of Woodrow Wilson's 1917 address to Congress seeking a declaration of war against Germany. The remainder of the paper is dedicated to beginning the establishment of a link between Wilson's rhetoric during World War I and President Bush's rhetoric which drew America into war with Iraq.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of intracervical Foley catheter insertion, for the induction of labor, on cervical canal infection.
DESIGN: A prospective interventional study with paired analysis.
PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: The study was conducted in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Aga Khan University, Karachi, between June 1 and August 31, 2002.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In 45 women undergoing cervical ripening with intracervical Foley catheter for the induction of labour at term, cervical swabs were taken for culture and sensitivity before its insertion and again after its spontaneous expulsion or removal.

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The precautionary principle has been highly influential in legal systems all over the world. In its strongest and most distinctive forms, the principle imposes a burden of proof on those who create potential risks, and it requires regulation of activities even if it cannot be shown that those activities are likely to produce significant harms. Taken in this strong form, the precautionary principle should be rejected, not because it leads in bad directions, but because it leads in no directions at all. The principle is literally paralyzing— forbidding inaction, stringent regulation, and everything in between. The reason is that in …

This dissertation investigates the theory and practice of editing as it moves into the electronic era. As an example of the type of material which scholars may now be interested in working with, it centers on an edition of a lecture given by the West Virginia artist-journalist David Hunter Strother on John Brown nine years after the insurrection at Harper's Ferry. This material was chosen because it was locally available, unpublished, both locally and nationally important, and of the dimension which would have formerly placed it on the margin of paper publication.
